Re: Cake Brags
They force you to make those cheesy torso cakes when you take a Wilton class? Oh, brother! (Although yours turned out beautiful, I still think they could teach you necessary skills while allowing you to make a cake you'd be proud to s how off to everyone.)

Re: Cake Brags
It looks great! I saw that there's a store downtown that will be having cake decorating classes. I've been thinking about signing up just to learn a few basics, but I really don't think I have any talent for it at all. It might be a good way to get out of the house for an hour a week though...
Re: Cake Brags
I say go for it, Rebecca! I would love to find a class...although the kids are grown and there are no grandkids in sight, I could amuse myself.

Re: Cake Brags
Just got pics of the sushi cupcakes from sis, they got kind of flattened though, because she wrapped cellophane around them really tightly without realizing that she was screwing up the pieces that were supposed to be sticking up and they ended up getting squished. Not my best work, because it was done the night before with no warning or notice, and she didnt' want me to take my time on them. She also didn't want dark, blackish green for the seaweed wrap, even though that would have been more realistic.

Re: Cake Brags
I don't even know how to pipe a flower, that's where my problem comes in....I would love to take a traditional decorating course to learn the basic techniques.. I just play around with different cakes but would love to be able to do traditional cakes as well.. we should have a thread just for posting our creations so that we can get inspirations and trade ideas with each other...

Re: Cake Brags
Maybe we ca rename this thread Cake Brags and Inspiration or something. There are already so many photos and hints in this thread that I'd hate to start a new one.

Re: Cake Brags
I am sure that some of you have seen some of my cakes that I have posted, but I will post my favorites again (for braggings sake lol) I have plenty more pics but don't want to be a jerk and take up a bunch of space with my pics, so I am just going to post my Kenny cake, Stewie, and Homer cake. I have done a pumpkin, cheeseburger, train, litterbox, pizza, puppy , etc..and those turned out pretty nice too.. I take pride in these below the most because I didn't have anything to go by and I cannot draw a stick figure to save my life, but somehow it's just easier with cake, as long as you stick to characters who are made up of simple shapes..you know, we all ought to get together and start a business...

Re: Cake Brags
I think my cake was way better then the cupcakes from Wally world I brought to school today. I can't believe my baby is 5.
Re: Cake Brags
Kelly, I have made the litterbox cake too. I really grossed my brother out and he wouldn't eat it...lol It really is a good cake though, despite the looks.

Re: Cake Brags
I remember doing an Easter basket cake one year. I hollowed out a bit of the top, and used colored coconut for the grass sticking out and over the sides, jelly beans, and dyed eggs and layed on the top, and then put a few pieces of chocolate candy around. I done a basket weave around the sides, and used a piece of plastic to make the handle, and iced it. It was pretty cute.

Re: Cake Brags
Zoe and I are looking at cakes online right now and I'm thinking of doing a version of this:
I know I can do three round cakes frosted blue, and the grass looks easy enough. The question is, how do I do the flowers and those butterflies? I'm thinking they're frosted cookies, but how do I attach them? The little flowers should stay on with just icing, right? But those butterflies look like they'd fall off if they didn't have something more.

Re: Cake Brags
pins? I have no idea but it's super pretty. Lori- I would NOT eat that, no matter how good it supposedly tasted. A little too real for me.
Re: Cake Brags
Heh heh. I know - it's gross looking. It might not be the cake everyone is talking about. I've made a dessert that uses layers of pudding and crushed oreos that looks like dirt. You serve it in a flower pot and "plant" a new artificial plant or flowers in it. It really can fool people. This cat box version uses Nilla Wafers on top to duplicate cat litter. The poops are softened, formed Tootsie Rolls.

Re: Cake Brags
Karen that is a pretty cake. Are the butterflies made from fondant maybe?
If so, use frosting to "glue" them on. If they are fondant, I wouldn't think they would be very heavy. You might have to use Royal icing, instead of buttercream..that stuff would hold a cement truck in place once it set up.
I so want to do a wedding cake. One of the fancy ones. That is one type I have not tried doing. Maybe one of these days.

Dirt Pudding, that stuff is out of this world. The hospital I worked at used to make it in the cafeteriaLori wrote: I've made a dessert that uses layers of pudding and crushed oreos that looks like dirt.

Re: Cake Brags
OK, it's off topic, sort of, but did anyone watch Last Cake Standing on the Food Network? The last show was on on Sunday night. I thought Courtney was robbed. I also felt lthat Bronwen got taken down a notch or two, and thought it could only be good for her. I think her head was getting a little too big for her own good. Mary Maher of Chicago ended up winning.

Re: Cake Brags
The sushi cupcakes are very creative.
The dirt cakes are yummy, those litterbox ones look way to real, I don't think I could eat one.
Karen- I've never worked with fondant....it was new when I learned, and I didn't get to try it, but I think those 'cookie' looking butterflies are piped flat on wax paper with a royal icing, which dries very hard. They are light and easy to add to the cake with large doses of piped icing (you can see a strip is laid on the cake, the wings attached and some more fresh icing is piped over top where the wings meet, and forms the body. You may have to assemble the 2 wings into a stripe of piped icing letting it dry by leaning it on a bowl or something, then attach the butterfly in one piece. Depends how heavy your wings end up being.
I will warn you...you gain 10 lbs if you take these classes. Although more modern classes don't use cake at all (check with your shop). They practice on styrofoam 'cakes' and may only assemble 1 real cake. I took lessons from a private cake shop, with a quirky teacher (hence the woman cake). She taught us that because she said if we knew how to cut and assemble that cake, we'd could fill most any cake order. (Plus, that, or some form of that is a very popular cake). It did teach you how to properly cut, layer, form shapes, use a crumb coating, making flowers, piping outlines. All great skills for any cake you'd be asked to make. It did teach me alot.
