Awesome! I'm so impressed. My turn is coming soon but I may chicken out and do something simple. Heck, I might even just buy a cake. I always have half a million things going on right before the party.

sugar cones with frosting, they had way more on them but it was quickly melting away, it was so pretty when I first finished, lol. First they said 81, then they said high 60's with rain and what we got was 89 and lots of hot sun. I did everything else Saturday night but couldn't do the tall stuff because it wouldn't fit in the fridge.

I love it!! you did great!

and I have a great recipe for buttercream. VERY easy, so when you start to branch out and need to color the icing, holler. It colors and is smoother to spread than tubs. I was shocked when I used it. Plus its MUCH cheaper! LOL

Share the recipe! I just bought tubs because they were only 24 cents after coupons a while back and whipped them myself. It was cream cheese frosting, kinda yellowish but turned bright white when I whipped it. But I have Rylan and Robby coming up and I used my whole stockpile, lol. Although I doubt I will go beyond simple, ever. I hate cooking/baking, placing candy was pretty simple, lol.

Cake Brags Empty Re: Cake Brags

Post by chelle Mon Apr 27, 2009 2:20 pm

a cup of crisco
3 sticks of good quality butter.

Mix these up till they are creamy

THEN, add
1 teaspoon clear vanilla
1 teaspoon clear butter flavoring

mix in.

add in slowly, a two pound bag of powedered sugar (confectioners). I swear it will all go in there. Add a little at a time, and then mix it on HIGH for about 7 or 8 minutes.

The longer you mix it, and the slower it goes in, the smoother and less air you have in the frosting and the less you will have to smooth it out.

and a trick for smoothing.. put on your crumb coat. THEN wait a while. I usually do this a few hours or so before I start to decorate. THEN, put on your frosting. let it dry anywhere from 15minutes to hours. and take a viva paper towell. Lay it on there and smooth it out. it will makeyour frosting soooo smooth. I swear.
I also use copy paper to do it.

ANd I use wiltons colors (Y'all told me about them, and they are at walmart) . They really do work. Its amazing. and they dont change the frosting at all. Where as food color will water it down. or give it an icky taste.

things I have found.

twizzlers can look like leather.

Air head candy can be cut, rolled, shaped and comes in differnt colors.

Graham crackers looks like dirt, as does oreos. But graham crackers are brown. and they taste pretty good against buttercream icing.

You can do up your frosting well in advance, and even freeze it, pop it off the wax paper and put in on. (for some writing, flowers, etc. )

if you have pirex dishes, (bowls, measureing cups, finger bowls, cassarole dishes etc) you can bake a cake in them and have some neat shapes to carve from

That is about the same buttercream recipe I use. If it gets really stiff on me while mixing, I add a few drops of milk to thin it.

OH wait, my SIL is in 2 weeks.

trying to think of what to do....

Cake Brags Empty Re: Cake Brags

Post by KellyM Mon Apr 27, 2009 4:00 pm

Yup chelle, the pyrex bowl thing works great, that's what I used to make the top of my fireman's helmet cake, it worked like a charm. I have only done a couple cakes with fondant the rest have all been regular frosting. I have done a litterbox cake, pizza cake, cheeseburger cake, Kenny from Southpark, pumpkin (i did use fondant for the fall leaves but only frosting for the cake),Homer Simpson, Stewie from Family guy, and the two cakes I made that were mostly fondant were a train cake, and the fireman's hat cake.

Another thing, if you want the frosting to have a glossy finish (if you want something on your cake to look shiny) let the frosting on that part set for a while until it has kind of a crust on it, then put a blob of paste food color on aplate and take a new craft paint brush and dip the tip in water and then in the foodcolor and paint it on. As those of you who saw the pumpkin cake pics it looked like glass or ceramic...

On JJ's pizza cake I used white chocolate and grated it to look like mozerella. shaped caramels into mushroom shapes, cut circles out of fruit roll ups for pepperoni, almond paste for onions and green gummy worms for green peppers, etc.. so that cake was totally edible and had no fondant and loaded with candy like Tara's candyland cake, I put it in a new pizza box and sliced it with a pizza cutter, it was cute...

I still don't have pics of the sushi cupcakes that my sister and I made for her daughter, but I am planning the next cake for Wynonna's birthday. I want to make a big cake in the shape of a Chinese take out box and have noodles kind of hanging over the side of the box..

It doesn't have to be a boring sun. I used to decorate cakes years ago (only for family and friends). I had taken the Wilton course (even graduated), and I hated to buy all their expensive stuff. So I bought the colors, and tips, and used images I found on the internet, and cut my cakes as you guys have. I never bought shaped pans. I should drag out some old pictures one day.

I'd love to see them lucky!

I dont have the shaped pans, and honestly, dont want them. I think they kinda put you in a box and you dont feel like you have complete imagination rein with them.

I use a regular old cassarole dish, and make quite a few cakes (I put 2 mixes in it at a time) and then cut it how I want it. drawing it out on wax paper first.

What I need to learn chelle is how you do the labels/wording so perfectly? Like the Coca Cola on the coke cake you made and the wording on the beer can cake? The wording on those were spot on. Any of the cakes I have made havent' had any wording on them, but I would consider making something with wording on it if I could get it to look as nice as what you have on those two cakes.

I was wondering how you got the cake so shiny, Kelly! I'd love to make a shiny cake. I really need to decide when I'm having Zoe's party and what I'm doing. Her birthday is in July, but I want to do the party before preschool lets out for the summer. I think that's in about a month since it lets out before the regular school year ends.
