Re: Cake Brags
Lori she has got some beautiful cakes on there. I love that one wedding cake that is sitting on the round cakes. It has the square tiered cakes in the background.

Lori, now you make me want to go to Michigan! Wish I knew about her place 2 years ago when I was up that way every couple of months.

Re: Cake Brags
For a BD in june I have to make 2 hands. One showing 4 fingers up, the other showing 5 fingers. I todl them it would be very cartoonish. They want that because she is turning 45, and their boss is always telling them that one girl is the left hand, and my SIL is his right hand. and the BD girl keeps them together and on track... ??? They work in a vets office.
Then for a wedding cake my soon to be SIL wants a ball and chain cake. Not sure yet how I will do it. Dont know if she just wants a literal ball and chain laid on a cake board. OR wants a 3 layer wedding cake with a ball as the 4rd layer and the chain draping down.
I like the layer idea better, but am not sure I can do a layer cake wiht out it falling. I have never played wtih dowells or boards, or the things that hold them seperate...

Re: Cake Brags
The only way I've seen a ball cake done is actually using a bought cake pan for a soccer ball. You could try 2 halves in a rounded mixing bowl (stainless steel of course), but I'm not sure you'd actually get a nice round ball.
They do have quite a few ball and chain cake toppers. You might just recreate the picture on a flat cake as a groom's cake.
The hand cakes could be really neat, are you thinking drawn on a cake, or cut out shapes? The second a bit more difficult. Although I avoid cutting as much as possible.

Re: Cake Brags
If you do a 3d bowling ball you could get a Styrofoam ball and cut it in half and make it slightly flat on the bottom so it could sit with out rolling. and then just do the top half in cake by carving regular cake into a dome shape. You could just cover in icing or if you wanted that smooth look and decided to try it out use fondant.
lol just thinking aloud.. I haven't gotten my creative juices going lately and am feeling the need to do have a crafternoon soon

Re: Cake Brags
This one doesn't show well, but it was a campsite, dome tent, path, fences, squirrels, trees, a small brook, with candy rocks, and tossed empty beer cans. It was a fun one to do.

You have to be very careful about mixing cake with styrofoam. You don't want anyone ingesting even a tiny bit. If you make something inedible on a cake, it should be completely removeable before cutting, and very obvious that it is inedible, or someone, somehow will find a way to eat it.

Re: Cake Brags
You're right lucky. I was thinking maybe a piece of cardboard between the two. Other than that I'm not sure. I haven't done big cakes before so i'm just spitting but good point about the little one!
Re: Cake Brags
The campsite is awesome Lucky, great detail, I would have loved to see that one in person.
Re: Cake Brags
Thanks Tara, it was really neat in person. This one was neat. I had to use a dowel rod and piped icing right over it for the open mouth. Another technique my teacher showed me.

Re: Cake Brags
Lucky, the alligator is really cute, especially his little feet. But don't alligators only have four feet? I've had 2 nightmares with alligators in them, and trust me, being chased bya 4-legged alligator is bad enough! Please don't give them any more advantages than they already have.

Re: Cake Brags
LOL! You know I guess it's not an alligator. I was merely following teacher direction. I made it 20+ years ago. Maybe it should've been a salamander? I'm not sure. I labeled the pictures about 15 years ago when I was organizing them in my picture files. I don't know what it is, but it looked cool! LOL

I think it would work. Just use the cardboard that you mentioned in a later post to keep the folks out of the styrofoam. I should have quoted that post, but I liked this one better because of the word crafternoon. I'm feeling the exact same way. Between shopping, baby chasing, cleaning, and being sick, I've not have a moment in forever to use my imagination.
Re: Cake Brags
The hands I will cut. I like cutting cakes And its really easy.. I was suprised. I try to avoid all flat cakes with drawing on them I want 3-D LOL
LOL about Bow! yes he would eat it. There is no doubt in my mind! LOL
I will use a bowl if I do it, Probebly a half 'ball' painted black. and it would be the 3rd layer (the take homeand eat at one year anniversary layer) if I did a tiered cake.
I am thinking airheads for the chain. That will be easy as pie. (which makes NO sense... pies are NOT that easy to make if you do it from scratch... LOL I rolled out 4 things of crust last night for a dew berry cobbler... I dislike making pies... )
I will paint them silver or black. the chain links that is.

Re: Cake Brags
this one I used a template and kinda 'scored' the cake in a few places to write the words. It was somewhat easy, except I had the cake at an angle and didnt realize it was crooked until I was completly done.. LOL
It was 3 9X13 cakes. cut and shaped.
