Re: Cake is DONE!!
I still think it's a strange concept for a store, but you really did a great job on the cake!
Re: Cake is DONE!!
So how did you end up doing the camo?

Re: Cake is DONE!!
THANK YOU soo much!!
yes, they liked it and a friend of mine that was there, said she heard my name quite a few times, and folks were asking for buisiness cards.. LOL
I put fondant on it, and then hand painted all the leaves and twigs and everything with vodka and wilton paste.

Re: Cake is DONE!!
Wow! That camo looks amazingly like the real thing. I'm stunned that it's hand painted.
Re: Cake is DONE!!
Very Nice Chelle, I am beyond impressed at how neat you write. I do not write that well with pen and paper, let alone icing.
Re: Cake is DONE!!
It really looks good. I agree with Karen on how realistic it turned out. I was just out shopping and saw a National Guard truck and I thought "Chelle's camo looks much better".

Re: Cake is DONE!!
Karen, Thank you so much. That means alot. That all of y'all like it means alot. The family that saw it said "oh neat" or "cute" and that was about it...
Tara, Its all about the transfers girl... Honestly- the trick is to copy what you want to write, get it that big, then turn the paper over, trace it on the backside, put some parchment or saran wrap over that, write the outlines of the letters (backwards juts like they were traced) in icing and then transfer it to the cake.. Then you have a half way stencil and only have to fill the letter and replace some outlines.. like the top of the D didnt transfer- it was much easier to free hand that, then to do the whole letter. LOL
LOL Lori!! Thanks, maybe I should try to go to work painting their stuff! LOL
Erin, I know- right? LOL when the kids get a little tedious, I just down my brown paint and mix up somemore.. LOL
agaphmou , Thank you so much I honestly wish I had the money to do it for a living. Lord knows I need a job. and need something to do from home I cant afford to work. LOL
But I dont even think this area could support it. I have to compete with walmart and the local grocery, and I only got 40.00 for this one.

Re: Cake is DONE!!
You don't need much to start this business, you can work from home. All you need is a set of business cards and you will get word of mouth. If you were around here I'd spread the word about you,and I would definitely buy your cakes.

Re: Cake is DONE!!
Chelle, what you need to do is to figure out the actual costs invovled in each size cake that you make. You can use it as a math exercise while you homeschool. "Chelle needs to make a baseball cake for Matt's birthday. If frosting costs..."
But figure in all your expenses: buttercream, cake mixes, food coloring, vodka , piping bags, fondant, etc. Figure it out for the 3 or four specialty cakes you do most often and for a typical sheet cake that you'd decorate. Then figure out the time involved. Anything you make that is expenses PLUS a reasonable wage is acceptable. Anything over that is a bonus, anything under means you tell them you're not interested. As you get better, your speed will go up so that fewer hours of work will still get you the same money. Plus as your skills improve you'll get a better reputation and be able to charge more.
You may not get much work, but you'd get good money for the occasionaly work that you are doing.

Re: Cake is DONE!!
I'm with Erin... Vodka? I don't like cake as a rule... but maybe with Vodka frosting/fondont, I could suck it up.
As for business cards... don't buy, print you own...
I commented on FB about how great the cake looks... and bet (even as a non caker) that it probably tasted as great as it looked! KUDOS

Re: Cake is DONE!!
OMG cake is my favorite thing, except chocolate cake. My absolute fave is wedding cake, I seriously will go to a wedding for cake.
I asked my aunt and she said the alcohol in the Vodka would work well, not water down the color and make it stick.

Re: Cake is DONE!!
I'm with Erin, I dream of wedding cake. We hadn't had a wedding in our family in AGES and my niece finally got married a year ago...and had ice cream & sundae toppings instead of a wedding cake. LOL I'm still pissed about that.

Re: Cake is DONE!!
Right, the vodka dissapates and just leaves the color
and yes,m I love cake- but really dont like chocolate.. Now a tunnel of fudge chocolate I do love. LOL
Thanks dee, I saw your comment over there Actually I was told, that the cake was wonderful- BUT, the fondant was the best they had ever ate. It was so thin, and so creamy. Not like fondant they had ever seen before.
Now thats scary- can you imagine just how good I could be if I knew what I was doing?? ROFLMAO!
Lori, yeah- thats enough to be pissed about! LOL
I remember eating the topping to my wedding cake the next year- and it was SOOO good!! LOL
It was from the local grocery bakery. the cake itsself was.
