Let's talk politics
yeah, some of you could give a hoot, some of you won't ay, but I'm proud to say, I'm A Democrat.... and in just about 50 minutes, Barack Obama is going to make his acceptance speech... I have found the speeches leading up to tonight, have been pretty good, with Michelle topping the lot.. my gosh, are we about to elect the wrong Obama? Okay, yes, her speech was impasioned, moving, and very personalized, by I PERSONALLY, thin Obama is the person to vote into office and lead our great country.

I've been watching this for days.... I wish I was there, it is exciting. He wasn't my first choice, but in my opinion the lesser of the two evils... and I like Joe Biden

JMHO = Just My Humble Opinion
If this thread starts to get heated I will be locking it, smiting everyone who's posted on it, and sending you all to bed without any dinner. Consider yourselves warned.

Re: Let's talk politics
It means just my humble opinion.
and I just dont think this is the right place for it. We have managed to have NO flame wars here, and that is VERY rare for any message board.
I personally think that this subject is a place where that would start.
I also am proud that this is one of the rare places I go where Obama has NOT been shoved down my throat. There are those who dont think he is the best thing since sliced bread. And I was glad to come here adn get away from all of that.
Feelings will be hurt, opinions made and it will bleed over into other threads, maybe not the actual fighting, BUT pot shots, or bzzagentmarypoppins being a little ruder to bzzagentbambi because she disagrees with her on the politics will happen.
As a mod and someone who loves this board I am of the opinion to do this would be detrimental.
And as far as "just dont" I can see that if I post my opinion I will be ridiculed, or treated differntly.
I dont think that is what this board is about.

Re: Let's talk politics
Well if we can't have threads for those who wish to post their opinions, pro or con, then I'm outt of here.
I thought we were an open forum... you can read or not, post or not...Good grief, if you don't agree or have anything to say, just don't read or post.
So maybe for me, it's gonna end up a good bye, have a nice life.

Re: Let's talk politics
Dee, we have never said there cant be, I just personally have the OPINION that its not a good thread. I never thought that posting MY own opinon would result in someone getting upset and stomping out. or maybe I did. which is why I kinda didnt want it to go there. It was never my intintion to make someone so uncomfertable that they didnt want to stay here. I wanted the EXACT opposite. I wanted a place that was NON confrentational. Non accusing and there was little chance of hurt feelings. My mistake.
But I agree, lets do it.
Lets talk politics.
GOta say, wouldnt vote for him for anything in the world. I have listened to all the speeches, heard every word and researched and read everything I can. The whole lot of them are crazy, and I pray we dont see the day.
I think they are trying to make us a socialist country, trying to make the rich pay for the poor, and the not so rich pay for those who wont try. that they will make it harder to buy groceries and gas, that they havent (any of them) lived in the REAL world. They havent had to choose between groceries and meds. They havent had to tell their kids "we cant do buy cereal, I have to pay the electric." They MIGHT have seen their parents do it, But they havent been there.
I think the worst line of Michelles speach was "let the goverment send them to college" I cant afford to send my own kids to college, I sure cant afford higher taxes to send someone else's.
I think we need less goverment, more freedom, and by GOD I think I should keep my guns and its noones buisiness what kind I have, or how many.
I think that Huricanne Katrina was NOT Goerge Bush's fault, that if we wernt fighting this war over there, they would still be here bombing us. That I dont mind if they make me have an identification card, record my phone calls or take a DNA sample for a national data base.
I am scared, for the first time as an American, I am scared if he gets elected. I dont like Mccain, but for ME, he is the only choice. I despise Romney, think he is nothing but a Kenedy Republican. and I pray that is NOT who he picks as a running mate. I want Kay Bailey Hutchison. Wont happen. I wanted Huckabee.
Now, I am sorry that you feel the need to leave, I was trying to avoid that. Politics are a very heated and personal subject, families, friends and countries have went to war over them. That was all I was suggesting.
And your right, I dont have to go to the subject, I dont have to read it. But if I start a anti Obama thread would you ignore it? Or would you feel like you should defend your self and your stance?

Re: Let's talk politics
No one said opinions aren't allowed. I said I would shut the thread down if it gets heated. As a Canadian I really don't care who you elect so I will make the judgement call as a disinterested third party. As mods Chelle and Erin are not able to skip and ignore posts, especially ones they feel may become heated. They need to be aware of any potential hotspots on the board so that they can be brought to my attention and discussed on the mod board if necessary. They expressed the opinion that they like that the board has been politics free. It was just that, their opinion.bizzeedee wrote:Well if we can't have threads for those who wish to post their opinions, pro or con, then I'm outt of here.

We had political chat threads way back when our board stated, and I don't recall any nasty business going on.
I also am proud that this is one of the rare places I go where Obama has NOT been shoved down my throat. There are those who dont think he is the best thing since sliced bread. And I was glad to come here adn get away from all of that.
So just don't read the thread! Heck, I dont like all the stuff I hear/read about McCain, so I don't read it. Period.
Feelings will be hurt, opinions made and it will bleed over into other threads, maybe not the actual fighting, BUT pot shots, or bzzagentmarypoppins being a little ruder to bzzagentbambi because she disagrees with her on the politics will happen.
I hardly think so. The last time we had a politcal thread, it didn't last for long. And again, if you don't care, don't want to know, or have no interest in reading, or know you won't agree, you JUST DON'T have to
As a mod and someone who loves this board I am of the opinion to do this would be detrimental.

I love this board too... and thought it was a place where we could talk about "anything" So if you have a different opintion, well, start a new thread... and don't bother with one you know you're going to have strong feelings or emotions about, or get up set about.
I dont think that is what this board is about.
And so what subjects do you think we should post?
*THis is MY opinion only, not the opinions of the other moderators or admistrator of this board.

Don't be offended.. I'm just trying to have a logical conversation, trying to understand why you're so anti about talking politics..especially since over the next couple of months it's going to be a topic that is going to be headlines.

Re: Let's talk politics
Man, I leave for just a few hours. Just long enough to feed the kids and clean up the kitchen and get everyone in bed... and the world comes crumbling down! People are trying to steal Dee's freedom of speech, outlaw Chelle's guns, and smite us all left and right, or should I say left-wing and right-wing, LOL!
Dee, relax. You are free to say what you want about who you like. But be aware that mods don't have the option of ignoring threads. We did have political threads months ago, but at the time there were only a few dozen of us, now there are hundreds. So please understand that a misunderstanding on a sensitive subject is potentially a much bigger deal than it was back then. So even if I agreed with you 100% about politics, I'd probably be cringing as a mod to see the subject come up.
As to my own opinions, McCain will most likely be getting my vote. I like Obama. I'd love to have him over for a cookout sometime. (Especially if Michelle stays home. ) But I sometimes feel he's more style than substance. And like Chelle, I have qualms about electing anyone who hasn't had to face dire circumstances. I could give you a long drawn out (and very well thought out if I may add) explanation of why I plan to vote the way I plan. But I really don't think this is the place. You asked on what subjects Chelle thinks we should post. I can't speak for Chelle, but I think we should post on subjects that make us laugh, help us live better lives, help us help others, and of course BzzAgent.

Since when are mods allowed to have lives outside of UB? That's it! I'm starting the smiting!thebigscott wrote:Man, I leave for just a few hours. Re: Let's talk politics
LOL! WE laugh now, but there are rumours of an election call coming soon. At least our elections don't take as long as they do in the US -- sometimes they're done in 6 weeks! Now if only we could speed up our judicial process...
Re: Let's talk politics
trax wrote:Don't ya wanna talk Canadian politics
Actually, I do! I know very, very little about Canadian politics. I only know what Rebecca told me, LOL. I had to look up viceroy to see what it was (other than a brand of cigarettes!). So do spill and give me the scoop so I won't feel quite so uneducated. And how many provinces are there again? 7? 10? 32?
Re: Let's talk politics
Watch Rick Mercer clips. He'll tell you everything you need to know about Canadian politics and make you laugh in the process. I love his show, the man's a genius!

Re: Let's talk politics
Here is it. We have Harper as chief in charge. Neil Young was born here but he could get much radio time so beat it down to the USA. We have hockey and we drink beer. In the province which I reside, our chief in charge received a drunk driving charge while vacationing in Hawaii. God, I forgot we have Twain and Murray - they are female singers not politicans. I straying, it is hard for me to stay focused on politics in Canada. Basically, there is not much - we generally ride on the back side of the USA.
