I totally agree bizzeedee! She would totally lose out if her parent pulled her out completely. I really doubt that it would happen though because her dad has been in Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts for 30 years (he's a much older guy, btw.) He totally believes in the scouting program. I'm glad to hear there's others out there who totally believe in Scouting for girls. I love what it's doing for the girls confidence, self esteem and relationships. I just hope this girl's parents choose the right thing for thier daughter and not themselves!

I can't believe that I'm saying this but tonight's meeting went really well! The mom backed off quite a bit and let her daughter do things without being right by her side. The daughter had one potential melt down, which I nipped in the bud pretty quickly and she only had a couple of tears. We made the activity fair and she was quickly satisified. Mom definately took a back seat at the meeting, which helped her daughter interact with the other girls more. So tonight was a success! Now I think we just need to lay down those choices for next year and hope for the best!

That's great! Maybe now that she's seen for herself how her own behavior can affect her daughter, she'll be more gracious and realize that option 2 would help her daughter enjoy it more.

Scouting really is a great program, isn't it. My oldest was in cub scouts and when his little sister got old enough to scout she tried daisies then decided she had more fun with the cubs. Since none of the boys or their families cared (we asked) we just let her go to all the cub meetings and she did all the activities with them. She couldn't officially earn badges, but she didn't care.

Zoe's now old enough for daisies, but she's taking swim lessons every day after school and gymnastics once a week. I really don't want to add anything else to the schedule. With four kids, it's too easy to spend all day long running them to different activities.

That's great that your daughter got to do all the cub scout stuff. Half of our Daisy troop has brothers in Cub Scouts so the girls get to see each other quite a bit. The girls aren't interested in what the boys are doing, but they do go on field trips with the Cubs. My son usually tags along with field trips with Girl Scouts if he's interested too.

We don't have any other activities other than scouting, but scouting keeps us really busy. Our Daisy troop is very active with field trips and volunteering. Next meeting we are planting two trees in the front of the Elementary school in honor of Arbor Day! (We partnered up with an organization who donated $250 for trees to plant for Arbor Day!) Then we have several other field trips for our troop within the next two months like a trip to the Fire station, Movie night at a theater, Swimming party, clean up at the park, drop of collected food at the local food bank, and then we also have 3 more meetings left of the year! Geez! I didn't realize we were doing so much!

I honestly don't know how you do it Karen! Having 4 kids to take to classes and extra curricular activities could be overwhelming! I can barely keep my schedule straight with just two. Your organization skills are showing!

It only sounds impressive. I cheat. I encourage them to all do the same types of activities. Zoe is swimming from 4 -5 every week day, but so are Zaven and Caly. The team is for any school aged kid. Zoe is in kindergarten, Caly in middle school, and Zaven in high school... but they're all in the water at the exact same time. I pay Caly an extra dollar a week to take care of Zoe in the locker room and wash her hair in the shower so all I have to do is drive them there and home again. Zaven and Caly are in a teen mentoring program together (being mentored by college students). Zoe and Quinn are in gymnastics together. Zaven is in Art Club once a week after school, but Caly's STLP meeting is at the same time in the same building. I even try to schedule any routine doctor's or dental appointments so that more than one kid can go at the same time. The only thing that any of them do completely independently of the others is that Caly is in tutoring once a week. If they truly each had separate activites, I'd go crazy.

My only complaint is that Zoe gets out of school 45 minutes earlier than the older two kids. There's not enough time to go home or run an errand so if the weather isn't nice enough to play on the school playground, we have to just sit in the car and wait for them. Next year Quinn will start pre-school and be going for half days so it'll be an even longer wait.

Glad that she is backing off!! Smile

Dee, I honestly dont like kids. they are rude, arrogant, selfish, have no morals or values. They speak to adults at 5 years old like they are an adult, they never say Thank you, please, yes ma'am, no ma'am or I beg your pardon.

Mine I can pop upside the head.

Mine are by NO means perfect, and have smart mouths, but amazingly that is changing now that we are no longer influenced by other children day in and day out.

I was begining to be ashamed to take my children to see my grandparents or even THEIR grandparents, because although they do say ma'am and sir, they would occasionally pop off with something smartassed. NOT the way I was raised.

I was raised as an only child. I was speaking to adults in ADULT conversations at a VERY young age. And I was respectful. I dont feel I missed out on 'being a kid' because I was raised this way. My grandfather used to take me to buisiness meetings with him when I was 4 years old. He would fly me across the country with him, cause i wanted to go. I would sit in an office and be quiet. UNTIL I was spoken to.

Smile yes, this is a VERY large petpeeve of mine Smile LOL

sensory issues huh??? well thats what I'm tellin BR and the kids next time they get out the turkey calls.. I HATE turkey calls.. they grate on my NERVES! LOL

I was a brownie- My kids asked me if they could join the scouts one time. So they looked at a list of things they do.

They were not impressed. Said it sounded alot like the work they do around here already. LOL

And since we were coming off a month with no electric, and sometimes no running water, the camping part REALLY wasnt very fun sounding. LOL

I don't like other peopes kids either, not at all.
We don't do any type of scouts, DH was a Boyscout for years and years..but his parents got SO involved that they pretty much forced him to continue, even after he was done. MIL did the same with PTA, never home, totally involved, so we agreed, no scouts, no PTA....and we are happy that way.

Scouting is a great thing, for those who enjoy it.

Get this crap- okay, I knwo I am too protective, or too old fashioned or whatever. BUT

My kids listen to country, to rock, to even heavy metal.
and yes I know that country, has lyrics that ARE about sex. ( I got the horse, you got the saddle, If I said you had a beautiful body..honkey tonk badonka donk..) they even have rockstar, and life in the fast lane, down on the corner, some kid rock, areosmith, etc. BR listens to Big Dog Radio station- its... I dont know I guess its the equivilant to what Rock used to be. but with todays music. and they hear all that.

BUT, my kid left his MP3 player at my MIL's recently. well my nephew, who does nothing but play video games (grand theft auto and some other crap that has school bullies and kids getting beat up, and all kinds of crap, )and watch anything on TV he wants. got it and 'added' songs to it. he is 7.

Its got all kinds of crap on it. Beyonce, lil john, Akron, black eyed peas, cascada (?) some dog stuff... bow wow?? , gorillas.., ray j, relient something, T pain? 8ball... pink, pussycat dolls.. and all kinds of crap.

THey KNOW I dont allow my kids to listen to this crap. I dont like rap. We dont do pop either. or whatever they call it nowdays. Kids being kids, they listened to it. NOW< I'm having to explain why they shouldnt be talking about smakin that ass, and a few other VERY crude sexual refrences- that kids dont 'get'. AAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

THis is why I dont like kids. and really dont like other parents. Of course, they live iwth my MIL, so my kids are already exposed to the crap when they go and visit with her- luckily they very seldom go in his bedroom, they mostly play outside, but I'm pretty sure they play the video games even though I have said they are not supposed to. They watched 2 or 3 movies over there that is NOT something we would let them watch- I'm talking adult movies. But noone thinks about it cause Masen gets to watch them. And I dont really think MIL realizes how bad some of the stuff is thats on TV. Masen has full satilite in his room.

okay- vent over. sorry to hijack.

Chelle, I don't understand, if you really don't like kids, why did you continue to have them? Yeah, kids can and will be obnoxious... (well I wasn't unless you listen to my older sister)... so I have to believe you do like them... you just don't know how kids can or will behave. I'm guessing yours are pretty well behaved from what I've read over the years here... you rule with an iron hand, which isn't bad, because I know you also show them love. And I'm looking into my crystal ball and see that your kids are going to grow into great young adults ...

So you're stuck with them (unless you drop them off on some country road in the middle of the night which I know will never happen).

Sometimes I don't agree with you about your techniques (not that I have anything to compare with being I didn't raise any), but I think you have their best interests in mind, and the kids learn right from wrong... my gosh, they raised, killed and cooked you a chicken! how many kids can do that?

Overall, you impress me, and I know you DO like kids :-)

Lol! I know, it's crazy that other people will let thier kids watch whatever. Fortunately I have a very modest 9 yo. (For instance, we were in Las Vegas waiting for the "water show" outside on the strip and an advertizing van drove by with a lady in a bikini. He shouted, "Now that's just inappropriate!" and covered his eyes.) The only thing I have to watch for with my 9 year old is language and being respectful.

My kids go to public school and there's been more instances than I can remember when I have to say, "That may be ok in thier home, but you know our rules!" Fortunately, Tegan's friends have good parents and always ask if he can watch a specific movie. My son really isn't into too much music, but he's a 70's child anyway. Deep purple is one of his favorites!

Geez, kids get exposed to so much today!

My kids are getting into music more now that they used to and I've already had a few conversations about it. But we all agree that you can like a song and think it's got a great beat or sounds super-kick-ass but NOT agree with the lyrics at all. They're teens and pretty mature for their ages. They also draw the line at songs that promote racism or violence against women. I didn't even have to bring that up.

My concern is that Zoe and Quinn (5 and 3) are wanting to listen to their big brother and sister's mp3 players. Quinn especially loves anything musical. He could sing long before he could talk. So we got Zoe her own player and loaded it with popular songs that are still appropriate.

I actually like most kids. I had some wonderful boys in cub scouts. There are a few exceptions, but luckily I don't come across them very often.

Oh my, the music thing. I can preach all I want about the lyrics, but when I hear some of the oldies now - in hindsight they seem totally inappropriate and skeevy. I can listen to the oldies station and hear a block of songs that I think of in my head as "kiddie porn hour". Ew, Ew, Ew!! And honestly, I'm a sucker for a pop beat. I love some Pink, Gorrillaz, and Black Eyed Peas. Rap is not for me, but again, there are some Eminem songs that I really like and "get" the humor. We don't swear - at all - in our house, and everyone knows it, but I have a fairly open mind with music and literature.

I don't listen to rap, and neither does Bayley, I forbid it. I do lke rock, classic rock, some metal, some pop... Black Eyed Peas, Lady gaga, I also like Weezer, ApSci, googoodolls, Ozzy.
I have an open mind with Music , it's out there, she is gonna hear it from friends so within reason I allow it.

I still don't like Other peoples kids though. And I do swear, the Fbomb is forbidden, but it happens.

I love kids and dealing with them. It's the parents that make it difficult sometimes.

Yep, the parents and adults in general. I can still remember how mad I got (I was hot!) when I was working at school during lunch and one of the kindergarten teachers was standing there talking about a little girl who was standing right there looking up at her and listening to what she was saying. It was so disrespectful to her! I always imagine my own kids in the same situation, and I can't tolerate that lack of respect. Adults being sarcastic or disrespectful of kids makes my blood boil. Unacceptable!
