Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
and is headed towards Nova Scotia.
The news just reported that this one could be worse than Hurricane Juan which pummeled us
back in Sept 2003. Some people were without power for close to 2 weeks.
It isn't supposed to be here until Sunday night, if at all. We are as ready as we can be. As the time gets closer, I will run off lots of water for drinking/cooking and fill the tub for flushing the toilet.
Car is full of gas. Have gas for the generator, candles and flashlights with lots of extra batteries. I am getting some extra groceries tomorrow.
Boy I am glad it is still summer.
Hopefully being prepared will be all for nothing, but you never know, right?

Here is another link, this one is about "White Juan", where some parts of Nova Scotia got as much as 95cm of snow in 24 hours. For that storm we had no power for 6 days.

Re: Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
I am so hoping this one misses us! We have to get the generator back from FIL tho just in case. I will prepare as well as I can for it. Juan never effected us (thank goodness), but I will be ready for this one. I know our turn is coming for one. I always get nervous when hurricanes are heading to Nova Scotia since I figure being on an island can't be good if it hits.

I am watching it on the news right now.
Yes a tornado touched down in Durham and so far 1 person has died.
If you are in that area please be careful and take care.

Re: Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
I'm a few hours from Durham. We've had some nasty storms through here today and at one point it looked like we might get some tornados here. Then as suddenly as the storms bubbled up they disappeared. Durham is a really nice area. We like to vacation up that way when we get the chance. Sounds like they really took a beating this time though.
Re: Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
I just heard on the radio that we should expect up to 150ml of rain with 120km/h winds!!
I am getting nervous about this storm.

Make sure you have plenty of bottled water, canned food( that does not have to be cooked), like Tuna and stuff, and plenty of TP. We ran out of TP once, and there were NO stores open......baby wipes work well though.

Thanks edbson.
I think we are well stocked.
I just plugged my cell phone in, just incase we lose the land line.

Re: Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
I'm more confident now that it's been down graded, but a Cat. 1 while on an island still scares the crap out of me. Apparently it's supposed to hit Lousibourg the hardest on Cape Breton (not sure about the rest of Nova Scotia). My mother is getting worried. She's only about 10 mins. from Louisbourg. She's expecting the worse, but hoping for the best. My father is away at work, so she had to try to prepare the yard herself, which wasn't much since most of the stuff outside is heavy enough that she can't move it, but not heavy enough that strong winds couldn't move. We are prepared as can be I guess. Pretty much our whole town has already shut down. They made announcements yesterday that several businesses were closing due to the pending storm. They canceled all flights leaving Nova Scotia (my MIL and FIL were supposed to leave today for an Alaskan Cruise) they canceled all ferry service across to Newfoundland and won't even let anyone on the property of Marine Atlantic (the ferry terminal). That is where DH works, so his shift last night and tonight will be easy (nothing, but still get paid as long as they just show up and leave, LOL). As far as we know, Marine Atlantic has never shut down completely before, so that has us very worried that they are expecting it to be bad. I so hope everyone is over reacting!

Re: Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
It is over for the most part.
All warnings have been cancelled.
It is still windy but the rain has stopped.
No damage here, thank goodness.
How did everyone one alse fair out?

Re: Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
Cape Breton (where I am) is still under 4 warnings still (rain, wind, tropical storm and hurricane). We thought it was done and over with here, but we are still under warnings, it's not supposed to leave Cape Breton for several more hours, but it's now not expected to be bad here.

Re: Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
We haven't been downgraded yet, but it's not bad at all. The actual eye hasn't got to our area of the island yet, but it seems to be heading a little more south. We are stayig at my SIL's house for the night just in case, but I'm no longer worried about it. We went for a drive earlier to check on our house, and there is no damage around my area.

That's very, very good to hear. Hopefully Bill will be completely forgettable and not newsworthy at all.

We had a death due to Hurricane Bill
http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/117347.html
We've been to Thunderhole many times and I could never understand why people would climb over the rails and down the rock ledges. It scared the heck out of me....very sad and preventable

Re: Hurricane Bill is a catagory 4
That is very sad! I was hoping no one would have lost their life by doing something like that. All over the news last night was people being filmed right on the shores with the huge waves! The police blocked off most of the roads to the popular areas for people to watch the storms here thankfully.
We didn't lose power or anything, so I'm thankful! All over my facebook are people who seem disappointed it wasn't as big as they thought! I couldn't believe it! I'm thankful it wasn't as big or actually hit us like they thought! My SIL had a few branches come down, but that was about it I think. I got a picture of a tree hanging closer to the road then it did before, but thankfully nothing major in my area.
