Traditional Holiday Stupidity
Ours is that every year, Scott wants to pick a tree that's huge. Too tall to fit in the house and as wide as it is tall. Then when it won't fit in he wants to trim it up, but since he's already got it in a stand, he wants to cut it from the top. And he has to cut a lot because it won't even fit in the house much less have room for an angel at the top. So (if left to Scott) we would always have an enormous Christmas shrub, rather than a tree.
So what stupid things happen to you guys every year?

We have done the Tall tree thing, but dh usually wants a "charlie brown tree". The kind that are 10 feet tall, with 3 branches.
I am not sure if this qualifies as a tradition, I certainly hope not but here is what he did. Last year, he decided to "dispose" of the tree in the fireplace, fine whatever. BUT instead of cutting it up into pieces he decided to start shoving it in there. Do you have ANY idea how fast a dried out Christmas tree burns? Pretty fast! SO he is shoving it up the chimney, and it was burning, and the house was full of smoke, and the kids were freaking out, and I got the water hose and sprayed it, and he SWORE he would never do it again.........we'll see, the new house does not have a fireplace, for this exact reason.

Re: Traditional Holiday Stupidity
My husband always screws up the exterior lights. Or screwed, past tense, I should say. For years I said NO to any exterior lights because they always turned out so bad. He doesn't get that if he has them in a tree I want them to be somewhat evenly spaced, and not just along the bottom part of the tree or as high as he can reach. And that if they're put up along the roofline or outlining windows, you have to outline the ENTIRE window and not just the 2 sides plus one small section of the third side, whatever you can cover until your string of lights runs out. I finally gave him permission to put up icicle lights, but I told him only if he spaced them evenly. So whole sections would go out and it looked so bad. No more. I'll go the greenery route before I let him mess with lights again.

Re: Traditional Holiday Stupidity
lol Lori, you sound like me! We used to put up outside lights, (the icicle lights) but everytime the wind would blow it would bang them upside the siding and bust a light. So when we would go to turn them on at night only half the string would be lit. He wouldn't go out and replace the lightbulb everyday, so then I refused for him to turn them on. We don't have any trees on our front lawn, but if we did and we decided to light them I would insist that they are evenly placed and covering the whole tree. So we just haven't put up outside lights for a few years. I think in a couple years when we move to town I will do them then. But I will have to be the one to put them up so that I have them the way I want.

Re: Traditional Holiday Stupidity
The tree up the chimney story is absolutely hilarious! I would have been losing my mind!
Re: Traditional Holiday Stupidity
OMG the lights... hubby strung up lights.... on half the porch and can't understand why I don;t want them on after he did all that work. Maybe if he finished the job, but he doesn't finish anything so I guess it's fitting.
