I just thought I'd throw it out there that Drugstore.com has 10% cash back today if you shop through Ebates.

Believe me, I've check them with no luck... VCR/VHS is becomming passe. Found one at Kmart, maybe Walmart, but when reading reviews, poo pooed them... Target has a Tobisha, that might we be the item, so hubby and I just make the 25 mile trek tomorrow (no free shipping, but with the price of gas and a lunch in a "semi" big city, might be incintive enough to drive the distance

I've got this DVD/VCR model on one of my amazon wishlists, a Toshiba:

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-DVR670-DVR670KU-Recorder-Built/dp/B001TOD3KU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=ISXIYVOB7OAW6&colid=1TUXPBDXG8NO0

I can't vouch for it personally, but it's bound to be better than the Panasonic I've got that keeps locking up. The only good thing I can say about the Panasonic is that it can use the DVD-RAM disks that can be erased and reused indefinitely, but now the trick is finding those blank disks (I used to get 'em at Circuit City).

Made the Trek to Best Buy, and my brain crashed (as in hard drive)... the machine we were were looking at, didn't come with a tuner... asked the associate, and he explained, you can't just plug into your TV if you want to tape live TV (which is what we want to do and which our old combo recorders did)... OMG, I see this becoming a long post... you might want to go to the next one :-)

He explained about needing a tunner box which you lease from your cable company, showed us and answered questions about a DVR system... which sounded/looked wonderful but overwhelming... then took us to TiVo... again, overwhelming...

We decided to go have lunch... and then went home... gosh all we want is something simple... we're old LOL.... so we're doing more searching for perhaps a refurbished older unit which is still workable by connecting to your TV) but will call our cable company to find out what it costs to "lease" a tuner box, since they don't sell them, but supposedly add a few dollars a month to your cable bill for the box (we have basic cable).

Honestly, I'm at the point that we should forget the whole thing... we can still watch DVDs (that part works) and maybe we need to quit taping TV shows and un-addict ourselves to TV :-(

Thanks... checked it out... at least at has the built in tuner, which means, I've learned, doesn't need a separate tuner box from the cable company.. going to do a little more reading on it.... this HAS been the best recommendation/suggestion I've received !

Dee,

Yes, this one has a built-n digital tuner, as does my Panasonic model.

I don't have cable or satellite, so I HAVE to have a built-in tuner to record my measly one show per week.

I should have warned you about not wasting your time at Best Buy (or similar big box stores). I ran into that wall a few years ago. NONE of the models they carry have tuners and they assume *everyone* has cable. They even act as though no one makes models with tuners, which is a big fat lie.

Luckily I *am* a techie so I can deal with these morons at BB and other tech stores. I just went through it at BB the on Tuesday with one of their "experts" who had never heard of weather radios (the kind that receive NOAA broadcasts), so I had to educate him. And another "expert" in the satellite radio department where I ended up helping another customer because the salesperson was clueless about the technical issues involved with these radios. At least I did my good deed for the day. Smile

Nyssa, after my last post here, I checked out the Toshiba you give me the link to... read about it, read reviews, then ordered it! and it's free shipping. THANKS.

Also ordered just a simple plain VCR recorder/player... for our 2nd TV from Heartland America, also got free shipping with it.

In another week, Hubby and I will be in 7th heaven... recording and watching way more TV than we need to be Very Happy

Glad to be of service, Dee. Sometimes it's handy having a techie around. lol

Be sure to read/check your PMs, Dee. I sent you some more info about recording on these combo units.

I did my duty as far as helping the economy via amazon yesterday. I finally won the argument with myself over getting a satellite radio and ordered a Sirius Sportster 5. I had enough in my GC account for the radio, but had to use real money for the speaker docking station.

Paying for the subscription is going to be a big OUCH, but I think in the long run it will be worth it.

Now I've gotta start building up that amazon GC account again!
