Post by aurora04 Tue Nov 18, 2008 5:58 pm

pneumonia! She had an appointment with our Doctor tomorrow morning, but when I picked her up from preschool, Mertyl (the director) said that Ceilidh had been coughing off and on all day, but it wasn't persistant so she didn't think it was worth calling us for. Then she said that Melanie (her teacher) said she sounded like she could really use a puffer (she's not on them anymore since the bronchitis was gone). On the way home, she fell asleep and her breathing was horrible. It was very fast and shallow, so we decided to take her to the clinic instead tonight since her breathing was really scaring us. She developed a fever very quickly (nothing all day, then within minutes of getting home, it was 101).

We made an appointment with the same doctor for 1 week time to make sure she's fine (our doctor isn't in next week, and this is one of the doctors that covers for him), so hopefully we will have good news that the pneumonia is gone. Also hopefully this is her last big sickness!

Edited to remove a line I had already typed. LOL. Don't know what I was thinking there.

Thanks everyone! She's sleeping now, and has been for about an hour. Her breathing is still horrible, but she has only had one dose of antibiotics. I'm hoping her breathing is back to normal very soon. I can normally handle her being sick, but her breathing is quite scary. I am so not use to this! Even with her bronchitis, she was breathing just fine (we caught it just as it was starting, so it wasn't bad). I know I'll be up most of the night checking on her. The doctor said that she doesn't need a puffer at all, but if she starts to wheeze, then I can give her the blue puffer we already have from the bronchitis.

Thanks again everyone!

She is still horrible! She just woke up from a nap and I gave her antibiotics (it's only a once a day for 5 days abx) and tylenol. Her nap was very rough. She kept coughing, moaning, and crying in her sleep. Her breathing is still very fast and shallow. I try to get her to take deep breaths (especially right after coughing) and that seems to help, but even then those "deep" breaths come quite fast and aren't quite deep enough for my liking. I'm thinking she'll be pretty good tomorrow tho. The doctor said he wanted her off from school for 2 days (I was going to be doing that anyway), so I'm hoping she'll pretty much be back to her normal self relatively soon.

Thanks for asking about her!

If she's willing, try getting her to drink something hot. Does she like hot chocolate? It usually helps me to breathe easier when I'm sick if I drink hot stuff.

She is doing much better today. Her cough is still horrible, but it's not constant like it was. She still has a lowgrade fever, and her energy level gets drained pretty fast. She ran to DH and Zach in the mall today (not very far) and she was winded and basically coughed off and on the whole time we were at the mall (which wasn't long since she wasn't feeling good). I'll be keeping her home from preschool tomorrow tho I think. She (well her and Zach) have a Christmas Party to go to tomorrow afternoon, so I'll just let her rest all morning and hope for the best.

MIL told me not to be giving her a puffer, because they burn the lining of her lungs. Well, not that I trust that, but even if that was the case, her not being able to breath is the bigger concern! If the puffer helps her breath after a huge coughing fit, then I'm going to give her a puffer (plus I have the doctor's permission for that). But she has only needed the puffer in the middle of the night, so that is good.

Thanks for asking about her.

The inhaler does not burn her lungs. It might taste bad, but thats it. It actually opens her Bronchials to enable her to breathe better.

Hope she is better soon.

Certain inhaled prescriptions require you to rinse your mouth well after you use them but the doctor and/or pharmacist would let you know and it would be prominently displayed on the insert.

More well wishes coming her way! And a flower!

I was pretty sure the inhaler does not burn her lungs, but I know nothing about inhalers, so I didn't want to say that she was wrong. Thanks for the info.

She does have an inhaler that her mouth needs to be rinsed out afterwards (her steroid one), but I'm not to give that to her for this (she had it for bronchitis). She is only allowed her "rescue" inhaler and only as needed.

She is feeling much better right now. Her only coughing happens when she gets upset, which is quite a bit right now because she doesn't want to eat. I know her appetite is non-exsistant right now, but I told her she just needs to eat a couple bites of everything. She's using the excuse that she's sick, so she doesn't have to eat. She's a pro at making herself gag and throw up so she doesn't have to eat what's in front of her. Even if it's her favorite thing, if she's not in the mood to eat, she'll make herself gag to get out of it.

The steroid inhalers can encourage yeast growth, thus rinsing the mouth to avoid Thrush.

She had a yogurt yesterday before supper, so I guess that was something. She has barely been eating, which I understand, because I don't feel like eating when I have a cold let alone pneumonia. She has been doing pretty good today so far with eating, but tonight will be the test there.

Thanks for the info on why you have to rinse out your mouth after the steroid puffer. I knew she had to (and she did each time), but I didn't know why.

I know how awful you feel because she isn't eating much, Wynonna went almost 2 weeks on fluids because she couldn't keep anything down when she was really sick this summer before she was admitted to the hospital. I asked the doctor because I was worried she was starving and he said that a person can go a long time without eating anything substantial as long as they are getting plenty of fluids. If she can't keep solid food down maybe try some Ensure shakes or something, if she can tolerate those.. I hope she starts to recover soon...

Luckily she's not vomiting, just has no appetite. She is drinking alot of whole milk, and in 3 days, her and Zach drank a carton of Silk Chocolate milk, so she is getting plenty of fluids. The cough isn't getting any better tho. If she has a busy day (which she did today), the evenings are pretty rough. She's been coughing until she gags tonight, but luckily not throwing anything up. She's feeling better for the most part, so she doesn't want to sit and rest. She just wants to get up and play. Try telling a 4 year old that they can't run and play much. LOL. I was told that I'm mean, and I'm not being fair because Zach gets to play. She understands that she NEEDS to rest, but she WANTS to play, so that trumps what she needs.

She actually did pretty good at supper. DH decided to make them chicken nuggets for supper since he didn't want to have a fight over supper (we were having chicken breasts), and she ate 4 of them (nothing else tho).

She has an appointment at 11:30 Monday morning, so hopefully the antibiotics did the trick and her lungs are clear! I have been told that the cough can last for quite awhile tho, so I've prepared myself for awhile with a cough.

Her preschool is anxious for her to come back. I called them today to tell them she wouldn't be there today, and the director was so glad I called because she had been thinking about Ceilidh and worried about her (she felt really bad that she didn't realize Ceilidh was that sick on Tuesday otherwise she would have called us). They will be getting ready/decorating for Christmas on Monday when Ceilidh is there (hopefully she'll be there), so Ceilidh is actually looking forward to that and wanting to go.
