Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
When Ceilidh was sitting at the table waiting for supper, I noticed her birthmark/incision looked different. I went to look at it, and in one spot there is a raised bump that is either yellowish in colour or white in colour (bad lighting and it's a very pale colour). She won't let me touch her birthmark either (which she has been letting me do the last couple of days). I'm hoping she can get in to see her dermatologist on Tuesday (she's in surgery on Mondays). I don't think it's an ER situation (plus I don't really want them messing with her face), but I also don't want her to wait until Tuesday (hopefully) to see a doctor either. I don't know what to do now. Even our family doctor doesn't work on Mondays, so the only option there would be the clinic to see whatever doctor is on.

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
oh poor honey I'm sure she will be okay until you get to a doctor, just keep an eye on it. Does it look like a cyst or a boil? I'm guessing her incision is mostly healed right? is it on it?

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
I'm thinking of taking her (and Zach since he's had a fever for a few days) to the ER tomorrow morning. Ceilidh now has a fever, but she also has a cold so I have no idea what's causing it.
The bump is right on her incision. She still won't let me touch that side of her face tho. When I do touch it, she flinches, but she's adamant it doesn't hurt. My mother has to go into town tomorrow, so she'll take a look at it in the morning. I'm not sure if I can put neosporin on it. No one ever mentioned being able to put that on it.

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
Take her to the ER. Tell them you don't want them to do anything except evaluate it. You can refuse treatment if they want to cut it open to let it drain or anything like that. But I think there's a fair chance that she has an infection and you don't want to delay getting antibiotics if she needs them. Also, go ahead and photograph it in good light tomorrow morning so that you can keep track of any changes and you can e-mail the photo(s) to her specialist if you need.
Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
I took some pictures last night, but my camera sucks. I'll have to take some more today in proper light. I got a good look at it last night while she was sleeping, and there is something very small sticking out of the incision (possibly a stitch??). I'm just waiting to hear from my mother to see when she's coming over, then we'll be taking her in. She got a fever last night, but she also has a cold so I don't know what caused the fever (no fever yet this morning tho). If they need to do anything to her face, I'll tell them no (unless it's just something simple and pull the thing out with tweezers or something) and let her dermatologist handle it.

She is in my thoughts. I hope that she gets better and I wish you both the best of luck. Hopefully it is something minor and having to do with the healing of her sugery.
Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
What about one of those urgent care places, seems my daughter likes to get ear infections on holidays and they are cheaper than an ER on our insurance.
I am praying!!

I'm thinking Dawn took the kids to an urgent care because she hasn't checked back in yet. I'm anxious to hear that all is well.

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
I wasn't able to take her in yet. I don't drive and my mother forgot to come over this morning and DH has worked an insane amount of hours the last 3 days (working from 11pm - 7 AM then from 8 AM - 9:30 PM the last 2-3 days), so he needed sleep. I'll be taking her in either tonight or tomorrow. Her face is looking better today, but it's still red. I gave her a bath and kept soaking the wash cloth and rubbing her incision (she was doing it do). That seemed to help a bit. Where I live, we don't have the option of walk-in clinics on the weekends, it's all ER, but being in Canada, I don't pay anything to take the kids to the ER.
Thanks for thinking of her! I'll update when we find out what's going on.

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
If she will put a wet washcloth to it, try epsom salts, too. They are wonderful for drawing infection out of an area and getting it all together at one place so it can drain. That's an awkward way to describe it, but the best I can do. And they are simple. Mix them in hot water and dip a cloth in it and then hold it on her cheek.
Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
Just wanted to quickly update everyone. My MIL, SIL and DH's Aunt all took a look at her face, and they all agreed that it's not an ER situation. They actually suggested to wait until October 20 when she sees the plastic surgeon again. I told them I wasn't doing that! My concern was if we should take her to the ER, or just make an appointment for her dermatologist to see her. I actually feel good with their advice (well not waiting for the plastic surgeon) since they usually over-react to things (especially MIL with the grandkids).
I'm hoping to get her in with her dermatologist on Tuesday. But if it starts to get sore, worse, etc... then I'll be taking her right in to the ER or our family doctor's clinic (he doesn't work Mondays or Fridays so it's always clinics for us those days).
I'll update again when we take her to the dermatologist.

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
Glad to hear that. I always feel better if there's a second opinion, and besides, emergency rooms suck!
Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
I hate emergency room as well. The one hospital we usually go to isn't too bad. The wait time is usually in and out within 1 hour. It's the odd times where the wait is much much longer so then we are exposed to all the new germs for a longer time period.
Her appointment is tomorrow at 12:15. I do love this doctor. Whenever we've had problems with her birthmark, they got us right in. Tuesdays are supposed to be for new paitents only, but they put us in anyway. I am taking both kids to our family practice's walk-in clinic tonight (Zach has had a fever since Thursday night, diareha since Friday evening and Ceilidh has a horrible horrible cough), so I'll get them to look at her face tonight to see if it needs antibiotics then let her Dermatologist handle anything that needs to be done (unless they would just rather the derm. handle everything tomorrow).
I'll update tomorrow after her appointment (or tonight if I get more information).

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
Sorry to hear their colds are worse. But her derm. sounds awesome! Keep us posted.
Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
Well, just like I thought, there is a stitch still left in her cheek. There is a small infection in it, but she only needs an antibiotic cream on it and nothing orally. We tried and tried to get it out, but Ceilidh just wouldn't cooperate with us. She kicked and screamed and cried. You name it, she did it. I held her down, held her arms down, held her head tight against me, and the doctor held her down as much as she could (putting weight on Ceilidh's legs) and OMG Ceilidh strong. LOL. The stitch was only sticking out a little bit, so the slightest movement that Ceilidh made the doctor wasn't able to grab it. I bribed her with everything I could (Webkinz figurine, Webkinz cards, even another Webkinz) with no success. So now she has to go to the hospital on Sept. 26 to have it removed there. I do have to keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't become more red, swollen etc... because then I'll have to briing her back in and get an oral antibiotic.
Thanks for thinking about her! Now I just have to hope it all goes well on the 26th.

Bless her heart. I know how hard it is to, to have to watch your child struggle against a doctor or nurse.

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
Well, at least you know what it is and that must be a relief. Zoe is the same way with her vaccinations. I have to lay my upper body across her to pin her down. This must be far worse since it's right on her face.
Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
I am so relieved to know what it is and that it will be a quick fix once we are able to restrain her enough. She was still crying up until bedtime that she didn't want to go to the hospital to get it done. She's now terrified that it will get infected. She's scared since we don't know if I'm allowed to go with her (I couldn't tell her I was going if I couldn't go) because all the doctor told her was that they would put a special cream on her face to freeze her face then she would go for a walk to the room to have the stitch taken out. Last time she was told she would go for a walk to have something done was when she had the surgery for her birthmark. I just feel so bad for her. We did tell her that if she was a brave girl, we would buy her a new webkinz and it will be the next Pet of the Month (for those that don't know about webkinz, it's just special extra games to play everyday), so she is happy about that part. She just wants me to do it myself and still get her a webkinz. LOL.

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
Dawn, when Zaven was 5 he had cataract surgery. Before the surgery he was getting more and more scared and started to cry. They offered to give him some medication for his nerves. (My sister jokingly calls it "St. Joseph's Valium for Children", but it's not valium.) Anyhow, they told us that it's very rare for kids to have a reaction to a small dose of the medication. It's a liquid, not a shot. And it doesn't knock them out like a sedative, either. They just relax. We decided to go ahead and have them give it to him, and it helped a great deal. Actually, he got a little bit high off of it. He was very goofy for about 15 minutes and discovered the joys of a hospital gown and flashed all the nurses. But a few minutes after that he was just normal and relaxed and a bit sleepy. We had to wait almost an hour and he just sat and talked with us and wasn't scared any more.
Of course, she doesn't need that type of medicine, but it might be something to consider before her next surgery and discuss with her doctor if she's developing a real fear of having her birthmark treated.

Re: Need to make Ceilidh an appointment with Dermatologist
poor baby, it will feel funny but it will probably hurt at the moment because of the infection, but nothing too awful. She will be more scared than anything, and I think that is the hardest part... on us anyway. Be sure to let her know that it will be really quick and tell and her face will feel MUCH better without that in it.
I had to have stitches (that were suppose to dissolve and didn't) removed from INSIDE me 7 weeks after I had Rylan... the ones from my episotomy (sp?) did not go away on their own..... it was the most awful thing, felt like I was having a baby all over again. First they tugged on them a bit with clamps to 'loosen them' at 5 weeks post partum, I about passed out. Finally they had get them out because they hurt every time I moved....
