Hurricane Ike, what a bag of wind!
Well Ike went through Ohio on Sunday...who would've thunk such a bag of wind could sustain itself this far inland? We got hammered. Power out for days, some aren't getting it back until Sunday. I was a lucky one. We lost all our freezer and refrigerator food...even in the grocery stores (dump trucks backed up to the stores after dark) and most of the restaurants. The few that had generators got just slammed with customers. The kids have been out of school all week. We are hoping they go back tomorrow. In the rural areas, that haven't got power back, they don't have water either because they can't pump their wells, and the generators (IF they have one, can't generate enough to power them). Churches are setting up free meals, trees down all over, no internet, phone or cable for many either (even those that may have gotten electricity back recently). Nearly half the houses have roof and siding damage in my area (again I was blessed). It's frozen the city, I've never seen anything like this that didn't include an ice storm or heaps of snow!
Weird thing is...our stores weren't stocked with supplies. Places like Home Depot, and Lowe's had sent almost all of their generators, saws, and battery stock to Texas! All our ground crews, and many construction guys went there too.
What a week it's been!

Kentucky had similar problems, but not where I'm at. We lucked out. Lucky, if you lost the food in the freezers, your homeowner's or renter's insurance might cover it. It did for my MIL once.
Re: Hurricane Ike, what a bag of wind!
We tried that last time we had an ice storm. It has to be over $200 and they want receipts to prove it. who the heck has receipts for stuff in the freezer? Thankfully I didn't loose that much, but I feel for the townspeople here. Many in much worse situations. Looks like some of the suburbs are going back to school, the main city is still closed tomorrow. Seems like each school district has one or two schools with problems, but they can't keep the whole district out all week for 1 or 2 schools.

Re: Hurricane Ike, what a bag of wind!
Same here in central NY Lucky.... I woke up Mon and saw the leaves were blown off the trees (and we need those leaves, fall is beautiful, lol) and thought no biggie. Schools were delayed then I read the news, some people still don't have power (mine didn't even blink) lots of minor damage and a few major ones like trees taking out houses and buildings. The kids and I slept through the whole thing, hubby said it was scary he was up watching to be sure the house didn't blow away. Not really sure what he would have done if it did but......

We had a lot of stormy weather, but were blessed not to have it too bad. But Tim talked to his Grandma the other day and in the town next to hers, they actually had to evacuate because of how badly flooded it got. She lives just two towns from where we moved from. Guess it was in a valley, and a lot of the businesses in that area were shut down. I think they still are, we haven't talked to her in a couple days to catch up yet though.
Crazy, I never thought of IKE going all over, but looks like it did.
I am sorry to everyone that lost things. But I am glad that you all are safe and sound.

It was very wicked here in Missouri too. Many people are still without power, but we never lost ours. We got quite a few trees down on our property also. One was right across our driveway even.
What is really funny is that my dd in Miami said they didn't even get so much as a drop of rain

That sounds about like my town!
he was still a cat 2 when he hit here. and a tropical storm when he got there. Its weird, but every 'cane that hits TExas stays mean as hell all the way through. Guess we do grow things bigger in Texas..
I am sorry that all of y'all are sufferin from him. we got electric back last night. I was really supprised. a month is more common.
And yes, we have linemen from ALL over! I watched a convoy of about 20 trucks come in last night!

I hear we have 15 arriving today from Oklahoma! Yay! Long way for them to drive to do 16 hour days, but I appreciate it whole-heartedly!

Re: Hurricane Ike, what a bag of wind!
We were VERY VERY VERY lucky (thank you GOD), that we had a cool front come in right after Ike hit, and have been in the 80's.
That month with out was in the 100's. and we had no water for 2 weeks of that. Of course even in 100* weather taking an ice cold shower is miserable.
thats the thing I miss most about no electric. is no hot water. I literly cuss and scream the WHOLE time I am in a cold water shower. Its the most miserable thing in the world for me personally.
Its actually still pretty cool here. I still have all the doors and windows open. But now I have all the extension cords picked up and am no longer tripping. LOL
Its so wierd to walk out at 3 in the morning and it be dark all over and you can hear the hum of generators. Its an eerie feeling to see NO cars on the road, no people, but heear that humming. LOL
I am glad that y'all are getting in some guys. we have hundreds down here from all over. During Rita it was a crew from Illinios that cut the tree off my line. They said I talked funny. LOL

I haven't heard your voice.... but no doubt you talk funny, all you Southerners do.
Re: Hurricane Ike, what a bag of wind!
I talk perfectly normal thank you.. Its y'all yanks that talk weird... LOL
Re: Hurricane Ike, what a bag of wind!
We had the same cold front, it made everyone keep their cool. I kept saying thank goodness for the cold front and no rain, or people would've had a whole different attitude around here when their roof shingles and siding were laying on the ground. Sadly in my county alone the media was cheering that the power company finally got the number of those without power down to less than 100,000. Of course that doesn't include the surrounding counties...which were devastated.
