ACK!! I need prayers or a time machine!!

okay, a friend of mine called me- asked if I could make a cake for next Friday.

I said yes. ACTUALLY she asked how much for a full sheet cake. THEN said, well maybe a half sheet cake.
and if I could make one.
I said "sure, and it would be 40.00." cause you know how dumb I am...



SO, then she tells me its for the grand opening of a boutique, called 'Camo and Lace' and they want it to be camo with lace on it.

I think I can do the camo- if I can get the colors right. This is not your typical army camo, hunting camo is differnt. Well, I cant do Mossy Oak, or real tree. Basicly thats leaves and twigs all jumbled together. But I can do the basic camo effect in the correct colors. I THINK. but the lace?? OMG- I know how I see it. its just a rectangle cake, colored in camo, with lace coming off the top edgeand kinda swooping down the sides. thats what they want. just their name on the cake.

I cant do lace... seriously... I cant even pipe a shell border... Honest. I dont know how to do traditional stuff. I cant even make a buttercream rose!!

how do I get myself into this?? LOL Please pray for me. that I can make this presentable. Its not like its a kids birthday cake.....

BUy paper doilies and use them, they work well.
Spray the food coloring on with a small bottle, makes good camo

Crappy name for a boutique anyhow. Maybe since they haven't had their Grand Opening yet you can talk them into a name change by next Friday...

Well, I was thining I had the camo down. BUT, I dont. cause BR said that I couldnt just change the colors of the camo (from army to hunting colors) and it be right. That if they thought they were getting mossy oak, or real tree, they would not like it to be globs of browns and greens. And he is right. But there is no way to do a leaf pattern with sticks and such. just not possible. I dont think Duff could do it, to be honest.

I am going to talk to them on Monday and find out what they want exactly. See if I can get them happy with what they are getting.

I am thinking about buying lace doillies and copying the pattern in buttercream. BUT I'm afraid the buttercream will crack. I dont want that. It has to look nice and smooth and not cracked and icky.

LOL Lori, ya think?? I saw it in town on Friday and thought "OHHHH cute!! Wish I had money to go in there!! " LOL I fiqure they have lots of cutsey stuff and maybe even the camo for kids. Little girls camo always has lots of lace and ribbons on it. (not for hunting, but for dessing) and then there is the lingre camo, and the camo items for your home. I dont know what they sell, but thats what it put me in mind of.

I don't like the name/concept either, but I don't hunt at all and it's not big with ladies around here, only with men. I think that maybe if you can get the camo right, you can stencil the lace. Try to take the doilys or some lace and lay it on the cake where you want the pattern, then buttercream over the top of it like a stencil. Let it sit just a few minutes to dry and then try to pull it off to get the pattern. It should work, but honestly I've not tried it so I don't know how well it would work because it depends on how the icing sticks to the lace. You could airbrush it with food coloring through the lace if you have the equipment, and I've seen that done and know it works. If you don't have an airbrush you could try painting with a brush maybe.

Use the doilies, spray it with food coloring, and then lift them like a stencil.A spray bottle works like an airbrush, and cheaper too.

what the hell is camo? As I'm reading, I'm thinking cameo... you know an engraved head or something... but a camo? and that's not short fof camoflouged fatigues?

That's exactly what it's short for. Military or hunting clothes.

Chelle, I don't do cakes, but is it possible to make some leaf, twig, and ferny shapes out of paper and then try to paint them with color and lay them onto a fondant coating to get a camo effect? Just keep layering them with colors until you end up with the effect you're after. I don't know if that would work or not.

I make TONS of camo baby bedding pretty regularly, especially classic and realtree camo

THey have camo furniture, camo lamps, bedding, lights with deer horns, tables with deer horns, I have a silver wine ice bucket thing, and it sits in a cradle of deer horns, I also have a glass bowl that sits ina deer horn cradle. all the bathroom accessories come in camo, Bedroom suites, living room suites. They even have Camo panneling for your home.
my kids have owned Camo since the day they were born. 2 of them came home in Camo.

I own camo, and not just in 'green- hide me in the trees' camo, I have pink camo too.

And yes and no, as far as it looking like army fatiques. Real tree, Mossy Oak, Advantage, they are NOT your wierd shapes in brown, green, black, and tan all jumbled together. This actually LOOKS like a tree, leaves, branches, etc have been woven into the fabric. or its pattern has been.

Erin's right- EVERYONE here owns something in Camo- Heck, I want a pair of those fat baby cowboy boots in camo- with the glitter?? LOL

I talked to them today, they said they were NOT expecting 'realtree' they just didnt want the typical army colors. So, I'm good on the camo part. Now the lace is killing me. LOL I looked at ribbon today, to just buy some and copy it. Dang that stuff is intricate... I am searching the web now for pictures of it. LOL

One of my kids had a nickname for many years because she loved everything camo. So we called her Camo Girl. I think it lasted about 5 years. She had camo clothes, hair ties, drinking glasses, pencils, pj's and on and on and on.

I have camo.... it's been in the back of the closet since the last time I went hunting.... 6 and half years ago when I was preggo with Saige, lol. I don't dislike it, I think the pink camo is neat, but I don't wear it or decorate in it.

I have pink, orange, black, gray, red camo shirts, camo shorts in all colors, socks, shoes...you name it.

well- if this dont just gripe my ass..

I worked all day yesterday, fondanted (I dont know if thats a word or not but it is now) a practice cake, painted the pattern, it looked decent--- Then I buttercremed just the random color pattern, didnt like it as much. went with me painting the 1/2 sheet cake on the fondant. made up a few more batches of fondant last night- Getting ready to buttercreme and cover the cake.

THEN I find out that you can pay walmart to make an edible image of anything that is NOT copywrited. HAD I known this, I would have found some scrapbook paper that was camo, and had them copy it on an edible image for 6.50 for a 8X10 sheet and been done with it!!
