A chicken question Empty A chicken question

Post by edbson Tue Jun 23, 2009 4:35 pm

Probably for Chelle, but maybe someone else will know.
DO chickens, girls ones , Crow?

I am asking because DH has this chicken that has been hanging around his shop, was sickly looking at first, but after a steady diet of Subway and jack in the box it is healthy looking. Today it started crowing, but he INSISTS it is a chicken, because it has no fancy tail feathers. I think it is a rooster, because it crows. BTW it is a white one, if that makes any difference.

As far as I know, only roosters crow. I raised chickens for years and showed them through 4-H. I had a trio (2 hens and 1 rooster) for show, and after the exhibition, I heard one of my "hens" crow. Sure enough it was a rooster. I could then not enter the trio in our Provinical show (needs to be 2 hens and a rooster), so I brang my last hen (I don't like roosters much for showing, LOL) to pro-show, and when I walked out of the barn I heard crowing. Turned around and sure enough it was my other "hen". Long story short to say that everything that I have learned over the years is that only roosters will crow.

actually, a hen will crow. its not usually a good healthy loud and full crow, but it is a 'crow' If you end up with all hens, sometimes you will get one that becomes 'dominant' she will start to mount the others, crow and sometimes grow larger wattles and comb. in some instances she will also quit laying eggs.

That said, not all Roos have tail feathers taht are fancy. sometimes americana's or anaconas (both mispelled) will be solid colors. Depending on her / his age, you should see blood red wattles and a larger comb. some breeds have hens with large combs also. and some breeds dont have wattles at all. Also, some leghorns and sex links are solid without a distinctive color change in the tail feathers.

How long has she been hanging around? at 5-6 months she will start to lay if its a she. with or without the presence of a roo.

can you take some pics? full body and close up of the face. Does the chicken have ear muffs? or a feathered beard? that would indicate americauna, or aracona (again, mislpelled, they are commonly known as easter eggers, since they lay blue green eggs. )

My roos just started to crow at 5 months old. they are pretty much ull grown, but the hens are not laying just yet.
