Dumb question.. Empty Dumb question..

Post by KellyM Thu May 07, 2009 3:46 pm

Ok so don't make me feel foolish, but I have a question. If you can freeze strawberries, and blueberries, raspberries, grapes, etc. Can you freeze watermelon? I mean, does it freeze well? I ask because out of all fruit I love watermelon the most, but in fall, winter, and spring it's very expensive to buy around here. In the summer the deals on watermelon are great. If it can be frozen/freezes well, then I would just buy it on sale, cube it up and put it in the freezer so I can have my watermelon all year long... Has anyone ever frozen it, when it thaws, is it weird or anything?

Nope, it does not freeze well. It has too much water, and will end up with a mushy blob.

I don't like watermelon, but I do like to plug them, you kinda don't notice the watermelon after a while

I agree, watermelon when frozen turns quite mushy.

They are right, you can NOT freeze watermelon, BUT you can juice it and freeze the juice, then make jelly. You can also make preserves from the rinds (an aquired taste) and if I can get the recipe down, I plan to make taffy next time I make jelly. Smile

Scott planted a ton of watermelon this year. Our gardening is always hit or miss. I am honest right from the start and tell Scott that I won't be helping. I have no luck with plants and even if I did, I get hot and sneezy and I hate it. So Scott plants stuff and buys fertilizer and then we get weeds and he doesn't have time to deal with it. So sometimes we get a ton of stuff, and sometimes we get a ton of weeds. But this year he's got a deal worked out with a friend where we buy the materials and the friend does the weeding and we split the produce. Some will be for sale, but I asked for yukon gold potatoes and I'm keeping a ton of those, and I'll eat as much watermelon as I can hold. Wink

Same here, my kids and I will eat it until we explode, lol. Hmm I need a deal like that, I actually enjoy the weeding but I just never seem to get a chance to get it done. Or worse the kids want to help and pull out all the good stuff.
