Canada
OK, I admit it. I know almost nothing about Canada. What should I know? Geography, history, give me what you got. And don't we have some members from England? I'd better start another thread. I know some about England, but not as much as I'd like.
And then somebody needs to start recruiting new members in Mexico, South America, Africa, Australia, China, etc. Australia might be the best bet because they're English speaking.

Re: Canada
Well... Canada Day or Fête de Canada is tomorrow, how's that for a start? LOL!
Basically Canada Day celebrates the union of the provinces that existed in 1867. Since we're not independent from England we don't have an independance day like you do so we celebrate the formation of the country on July 1.

Re: Canada
I forgot that you aren't independent from England. What is the exact relationship? Can they boss you around, or is it an economic thing?
Re: Canada
Technically the queen or the governor general (her representative here) could refuse to sign our bills into law, but that never happens. She's more of a figure head than anything else. The Commonwealth is still a pretty good political organization for Canada to be a part of though -- that must be why we keep her around! LOL!
We use our own currency and make our own decisions politically. We also still spell words like humour, colour, and neighour correctly.

Re: Canada
I go to Canada often ( well not as often as I'd like) but I sure can tell you that you can't get away from American Politics there!
P.S. They make outstanding wine, and have fabulous restraunts!

My future son in law is from South Africa and he spoke Afrikaans first , then English. I love the accent he has.

Re: Canada
Yes, as Rebecca posted - she is a figure head.
I live in British Columbia. It is rugged and wild. Vancouver is our largest city; host of the 2010 games. I will not have any part of it nor will my community have a legacy thereof.
Honestly, I love my little bit of Paradise. It is my belief the only state in the U.S. that comes close to British Columbia is Oregon.
oh, teehee - I was wed in the State of Oregon. I did not much look like a queen, I wore blue jeans and our vows were taken in a gazebo located on the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean at Newport Beach, Oregon.

Re: Canada
Cheque too -- that's right and if I've been reading in French I often forget if I shoud spell it "program" or "programme," "meter or "metre," "theatre" or "theater." I blame Quebec for that!

Sorry Rebecca I can't resist... what is a neighour?

Are you?! I don't know why that surprises me, but it does. Chinese descent, or actually from China? I'm all burned up with curiousity, now.

I grew up in China and just moved here a few years ago.
Re: Canada
Very cool! You should start a thread and tell us all about what it's like, and what the biggest differences are.
Re: Canada
Anything you'd care to share! I know absolutely nothing. I think I remember covering some of the most basics of history back when I was in school, but I know nothing about what day to day life is like, nothing of the culture or anything like that. What little we covered was China about 500 or more years ago, LOL.
Re: Canada
LOL.
Well there's not much big difference except the language, but I'd have to say that China is a very dirty place.
People don't even (have to) pick up their dog's poop. Not that much people has pets anyways though.
I can't think of anything else to say..
I'm glad to be in the US

Re: Canada
My husband's job is always the reason that we move..
The reason that we'll be moving again this month to PA.
We've stayed in Japan for 4 years before coming here also because of his job.
But it's actually good to see what different places are like, it's like taking a vacation!
