Me and my brilliant ideas!
On Tuesday the Red Wings played game 6 against the Sharks and it was soooo exciting. When they showed the crowd, some people were waving rags around in the air and I said I didn't like that. I said what Detroit fans need is....an octopus (Al the Octopus, their playoff mascot) on a stick! Then instead of waving them around it would be more of a pushing the stick up and down motion so his arms would fly up and down. I was just thinking aloud, but then I got thinking that I'd make a prototype for Bob. His birthday is today and it's the big game. The series is tied up 3-3, so this is the deciding game.
OH MY GOSH.
I can't believe I'm doing this. It looks like a crazed preschooler got into the arts and crafts supplies. But I am going to get this sucker done!! I only wish I had purple felt and not this cheap purple fabric - the only kind I could find at Walmart today.

What a great idea, Lori!
Too bad the Wings lost. That slow start in the series was the backbreaker. A Canucks-Red Wings series would have been a joy to watch.
Now I've got to root for the Canucks to knock the Sharks out of it. Go Canucks?!?!?

Re: Me and my brilliant ideas!
One year in the final game, I can't remember who Detroit played, but they won the cup. I made up red and white pom poms out of crepe paper and cheered the entire game! We all have brilliant ideas when it comes to hockey. I like Stevie - he comes from my province - Beautiful British Columbia!

Re: Me and my brilliant ideas!
Canada turns out lots of great hockey players! I don't care for America's obsession with football, I'd prefer hockey any day.
While watching the game last night they referenced a game that we all remembered where the Wings trounced Colorado for the Stanley Cup. This is when Patrick Roy was the goalie for Colorado - the nemesis of the Wings. Anyhow, my son remembered it so clearly. He said it was his birthday and we had a bunch of people over. He was outside playing most of the time, but said they would keep hearing us cheering inside. And he remembered that I had printed out and put together a bunch of Patrick Roy Voodoo Dolls that the Detroit Free Press had put online. He remembers us waving them around. LOL I forgot all about that! Good times!

Here he is. After the game DH stuck him on the TV. His stick is behind the TV screen.

Re: Me and my brilliant ideas!
OMG, for a quickie idea and creating/assembly in such a short period ot time, it's darling... If you haven't, you need to send a photo of that to the Red Wings... they might just be willing to pay you for the pattern (or maybe send you free tickets which would include an overnight paid for hotel package)!
Make sure it's on your blog as well, and include that in your email to the RW... this is your manager speaking LOL (hey, I gave you a great tip on the Mission Challenge, didn't I? listen to me once again)
But even if not, I'm sure it made Bob's birthday... what more could he want than a surprise inside his birthday cake and his very own "mascot" for future games.
Love, Love that face !
You be one very talented and creative gal, Lori!

Re: Me and my brilliant ideas!
It was a bugger to make. The first leg I made I sewed and then tried for a half hour to turn it right-side out. I finally chucked that and just freehanded the rest. This is a prototype. I might try to make a few more next year - well before playoffs. I'll use white fabric instead of white felt for the eyes, and purple felt instead of fabric for the body.
Bob did like it. He and Al have the same birthday now.

Re: Me and my brilliant ideas!
Chelle, I've been to all of two hocky games in my life (once St Louis and once nashville)... and there were plenty of fights I do not enjoy the sport of the antics... js
