Help with Cake ideas... 5 YO birthday

Rayleys birthday is coming up the 21st. I HAVE to do a cake.

what can I do? She likes barbies. BUT I dont want a sheet cake. and I CANT do a barbie.

Her intrests?? right now she is climbing a tree in full camo, with a tiera on her head and ugg boots.

She is too young for hobbies. Doesnt watch cartoons, loves all the princess's has a hot pink and green room (seriously, the walls are hot pink and shrek green), Go a bow and arrow for Christmas and is getting a hog 3-D target for her birthday. OH and a PINK BB gun...

She has seen the boys get baseball feilds, and baseball gloves. Saw the beer can, and watched EVERY step of teh MLP cake. I have to do something special. I am not confident enough to do a castle. I am not confedent to do anything standing up yet..

Go for the castle, if it doesn't turn out, tell her it's a mountain. and add a GI joe with a crown.

Do a smallish version of the castle. Like, take one cake cut in half and stacked for the main part, then four towers at the corners (one layer higher) with an upside down ice cream cone on each one. Frost the cones and they'll look perfect.

Oh and one time you were talking about how to keep it from crumbling so much in the crumb coat... When I did Zaven's cake I ran out of pam and decided to line one of the pans with parchment paper. It lifted out so easy and then I peeled the paper off. Some trace amount of cake came with it (always does) but it when I went to frost it, it didn't crumble at all. Of course if you're cutting shapes it'll still crumble some, but for the flat parts it was super handy.

Bake the cake in a Pyrex bowl, stick a naked barbie in it at the top, decorate her.


I use wax paper to line the pans, no crumbs, and freeze it before, and frost it frozen, no crumbs.

The only kid cake I can do is the ice cream cone cupcakes. That's my answer to everything now! LMAO!!!

Karen, I was reading today about parchement paper. I might try it. I do like the bakers joy, it releases MUCH better than pam. I also ready to put a flower nail in the middle of the cake pan befor eyou bake. it kees the middle from rising. ?? hmmmm..

She wants a 'swimming barbie' cake. I dont even know what that is....

I thought about a purse that is spilling out goodies. I just dont really know where to start. i wont use fondant, so it has to be buttercreamable.

I wont 'make' the goodies. they will just be little trinkets. Cause I know NOTHING about gumpaste, and it would be too expensive to drive to buy edible paints.

We did the goodies for DD's one year out of fruit rolls ups, sour straws, and gummies.

I'm getting ready to do Caly's cake this weekend. If I can get dry ice, I'm going to make it a smoking volcano/island. Maybe I'll see if I can find some tiny plastic native people carrying a screaming virgin up the side of the volcano. But somehow I think I'll have trouble finding those.

okay, this brat saw me looking at a pillow with a tiara on it. she loves that. BUT, before that she said she doesnt care what it looks like, she wants a stacked cake like a wedding cake,

Then she said "if you can do that pony cake you can do anything. I still think you can do a swimming barbie cake..."

I asked her AGAIN, what a swimming barbie cake was.

"a barbie, swimming, on a cake... your so silly mom"

AAAAARRRRRGGGGG! she just wanted a barbie in a pool?? LOL

But I still think I can do the illow and tiara.... but if I cant do the gumpaste thing for the tiara, I will fall back on just making a swimming pool (a 6 inch tall round cake, or a square , with a built in pool and rocks around the outside) and piping gell tinted blue, then shove a baribie in the damn thing!!

OH and she told me she wants a BIG crystal ring on it.... WELL, if I can do the gumpaste I will put a crystal ring with her tiara.. (y'all be lookin for gold dust! LOL ) IF I do the pool, she will just have to settle for no ring...

Do a search on kids cakes. I know I've seen some adorable purses and princessy type cakes that were easy.

what about a ring pop for the big crystal ring?

Make a pillow cake, and then find a toy tiara and put it on the cake. She can play with it later.
