Re: another one? This weeks cake....
I would lose the trees, and do tiki torches, and a tiki statue...

Re: another one? This weeks cake....
sand, surf, tiki hut, tropical drinks
tiki torches, volcano, tropical flowers and birds
example of tiki gods. they look like carvings, semi totem-pole- like
And remember that pineapples are grown there.

Re: another one? This weeks cake....
tiki mask ( I think this would look especially well chelle if you painted it like you did the wood sign on your son's cake and the old rugged cross cake you made and then did some hawaiian flowers like hibiscus
http://www.tikibars.ca/tikimask.jpg
hibiscus (most commonly associated with hawaii and luaus)

real hibiscus (these come in many colors)

Re: another one? This weeks cake....
This was the one I did for Caly's party last year. It's not a luau, but you could make the volcano similar to this one. I just put crumpled aluminum foil in a oven-safe bowl to make it a pointier shape. Then I lined it with parchment paper so it wouldn't stick to the foil or run past it. Super easy.
Re: another one? This weeks cake....
Oh, and I used cookie crumbs for sand, gel frosting for lava, and jell-o for water. The smoke was from dry ice (but you have to get it at most the day before the party since it'll evaporate right out of a cooler). The trees were plastic to save time and the only other inedible on the cake was a little plastic shot glass to hold the dry ice that was shoved down in the cake.
Re: another one? This weeks cake....
I remember that cake Karen! It was cute!! thanks for teh reminders!
Lori, Thanks that is a great idea..
I just wonder- can I make the tiki hut out of something edible?? spagetti maybe?? I"d hate to roll fondant that small, and that many of them.... I wish I had a clay extruder... aaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggggg....

Re: another one? This weeks cake....
YES!!! you are SOOOo right!!! I had written cereal straws down in my notebook, as the 'bamboo'..... if I got the right kind I might not have to cover them in fondant ...... LOL
Re: another one? This weeks cake....
I hope you get the order, your cakes are terrific you deserve to get a little back from them and they deserve to be admired by many!

Re: another one? This weeks cake....
THat was my first thought, I saw some on a cake, but dont know where to get them ??
and tara.. Thank you!! I appriciate the vote of confidence!! She wrote me and told me to go with it. really no suggestions. just told me that she is using hybiscus flowers, leis (out of hybiscus), palm trees, flip flop lights, and grass skirts around the tables.
So, I'm working now on what all to do.. LOL

Re: another one? This weeks cake....
You're so creative, Chelle. You'll have no problem doing it.
Are you getting good money for it? I hope so. Your cakes are certainly worth it.

Re: another one? This weeks cake....
cool!!
KAren, thanks I am charging 80.00 for this cake. 2.00 a person for what I concider a level 3 cake (lots of decorations) is pretty cheap if you ask the experts. I know I couldnt pay it. which is why I started doing it. LOL
BUT- I fiqure that I will put 10-12 hours into it. maybe more.
it will take 12-14 batches of cake
2 or so batches of fondant/gumpaste mix
5 or so batches of icing
3 things of piping gel
So far I have decided on
surfboards
a grass hut
the tiki mask thingy
flip flops in the sand
a beach towell or two in the sand.
an umbrella in the sand.
a beach ball
lanterns on the grass hut
I also am going to try to do some small leis, to lay around. but they would have to be small.
or if I can make the flowers pretty enough, put them onthe outside of the cake.
I will put either 'bamboo' around the edges of the cake, OR use my grass tip and put grass like on hoovers cake and the pond cake.
I am trying to fiqure out how to do candle holders made from tiki torches. I can make tiki torches but am not sure how to make them sturdy enough for the candles to go in.
I also dont know if I should make a sheet cake, do 2/3 in sand and 1/3 in water
OR do a sheet cake, make it all water, with an island, and on the island put the grass hut and all the sand stuff...
