Back into the Deep Freeze we go
It is freezing cold here again.
-28C with the windchill.
The house is nice and warm but my feet are frozen.
On the bright side, 5 more months until summer vacation!!

-35 with no windchill. I have words which are not appropriate here, but wishes to all. Spring is just around the corner, isn't it!

no promises erin, i'm just hoping to gosh they weather people that think they know it all are totally wrong -- again
my little of ky is often under weather watches the warnings, but come time for them, they split at some large lakes to the west of us (Land Between the Lakes, Barkley & Kentucky Lakes) and they head north of us and south of us, they join back up together around Bowling Green.... then head Karen's way EGADS! Karen, watch out!

Re: Back into the Deep Freeze we go
I am bundling up! I don't mind the snow. I just hate it when it's freezing but there's no snow. I mean, if I'm going to be cold, I may as well get to play some.
Re: Back into the Deep Freeze we go
Well, we are not in the deep freeze, it is about 30 here. However, we are preparing for a wicked ice storm to start tonight. I am in the area that is predicted to lose power for certain. They say we should be prepared to be out for many, many days. We are already having trouble with our furnace ( started yesterday) and the storm has not even begun yet
DH did go buy another propane heater yesterday, and I am preparing to go to the store to stock up on supplies. I just paid bills for the next week too, because I expect to lose internet and snail mail service. One of the worst parts of losing power for us, is we are on a well, so not only does our electric heat stop, we also lose our water when our power goes out. It is days like this I really wish we still heated with a wood stove.
Keep warm everyone!

Re: Back into the Deep Freeze we go
Some advice:
Fill every container you have with water. Also fill your tub for flushing.
Make sure your laundry and dishes are all washed.
Open any cans you may want to use for meals, unless you have a manual can opener.
Lots of candles/batteries.
Make some sandwiches.
Boil water and store in thermos if you have one also hot water in travel mugs for tea/coffee.
Make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
I am sure that you knew all this.
These are just things I do to prepare for the power to go out.

Re: Back into the Deep Freeze we go
Thanks for the good advice. I have been through these ice storms before, so I do pretty much have a routine down. I use only a manual can opener, so no worries on that. I am charging my cell phone, but it doesn't get a signal here as we are down in a valley. I have to get in the car and drive a few miles for a signal. I pulled out a corded land line and will plug that in soon. We often don't lose phone service, just the power to the cordless phone.
I do feel lucky that the family that was staying with us, left recently. Now I only have to worry about dh, me, 5 dogs and 5 cats. Better get off here and get going on the preparations.

We got 2-3 inches of snow last night, and we are in a winter storm watch for 6-8 inches more for tonight into tomorrow. I'm hoping they change it today, to 80 degrees and sunny. But I see a snowballs chance in you know where of that. Spring can not come soon enough!

I can relate Honey. We, too, are on a well, it is h*ll when the power goes out. At least we do have a wood stove. Stay warm!

after you, us... sw ky... due to arrive tonight around 10 - all ice. expect up to 1/2" tonight, then a short reprive before it starts again mid day and another 1/2" to 1"expected... again all ice.
I went to the store today -- OMG Walmart was a zoo -- got bread, lunchmeat, bananas and potato chips you know, the important stuff!
when we lived in the country in mich, we too were on a well, that was the pits during these kind of storms... but we survived, cooking on the fireplace, cooler on the back deck... you know the routine, i'm sure.
oh and bought a couple more flashlights and batteries. so now all we can hope is that it's not as bad as they say (around here the powers to be are calling it the storm of the decade.... last ice like that was in '94 they tell me), or that we don't lose power. we're a total electric house.... can drink water, can flush toilets, and heck, even take a cold shower NOT
everyone wherever you are, be safe (karen, want to trade your snow to come for our ice?)

Re: Back into the Deep Freeze we go
They have upgraded us to a winter storm warning starting at midnight. 6-8" in some areas. They are saying we will get ice too (significant accumulation), then a possible change over to rain that could be heavy. If we aren't closed in by snow we will be by floods after all the snow. I remember the big ice storm we had in '03 or some where in there, I was working that day at the hospital and like to never got there. It was a 5 minute drive that took me 30 minutes. After it iced all day it took me 45 minutes to get home. I think we ended up with 4-6" of ice on everything. I do not want to relive that experience again. No electric, the hospital had generators, and was operating as a shelter for respiratory patients or others on oxygen. They told employees they were not to leave, but my husband was at home, so sick he couldn't get out of bed, and I wasn't staying.
I hope we don't get that much ice in the next few days.
Stay safe everyone! Gonna run to Wally World and get a few things so I don't have to go out at all tomorrow or Wednesday.

We're lucking out right now at about -10F right now, this morning was -40F, if it had been 10 degrees colder at -50F, they would have cancelled school, but it didn't quite get there...

When you are used to an average daily temp of 70-90, 40 is damned cold!

See, that makes so much more sense than my usual storm preparations. We run to the grocery for condensed milk so the kids can make snow cream. Oh, and pancake mix because it just seems like good weather to eat pancakes in, LOL. Actually, we usually keep most of our "emergency supplies" on hand anyway. We always have flashlights, batteries, manual can opener, bottled water, ect. But that's mostly because of power outages from rain storms. So we really do run out for snow cream ingredients and pancake mix.
Re: Back into the Deep Freeze we go
gosh, i guess honey lost power... she's not been posting today (or at least not here). hope you're okay girl!
we lost power for a short while overnight. woke to less ice this morning than called for, maybe 1/4".
been raining pretty much all day and temp stayed around 32-33, so lots melted... but the temp is now dropping and the 2nd bout of ice is expected followed by maybe two of snow by noon tomorrow.
lost cable... but had taped stuff to watch, then it came back on around 4:30... but only "select" channels.
and lordy, by weekend, we'll be back to 46 !

Re: Back into the Deep Freeze we go
The temp dropped to -29C last night and for some unknown reason our power went out at about 1:00AM and was still out when I left for work at 6:00AM
Holy Frig, the house was freezing cold. Thank goodness the power was back on before I got home.

Storm Watch Information
A storm that is already plaguing the Mississippi Valley is slated to come up to Eastern Canada. Late this afternoon, snow will start falling in Southwestern Ontario. Around midnight, it will push across the Toronto area and by Wednesday morning, snow will make its appearance in Ottawa and Montreal.
Up to 15cm of snow is in the forecast from Windsor to Toronto to Ottawa, whereas Montreal will see up to 20cm. Slight windier conditions are expected in Southern Ontario as the storm passes.
Atlantic Canada
Unfortunately for Atlantic Canada, this storm will intensify as it heads east, picking up a lot of moisture from the Gulf Stream. Winds will also pick up.
This will be a major snow event (20-30cm) for parts of New Brunswick, starting late day Wednesday. However, warmer air is also accompanying this storm and that could decrease the amount of snowfall accumulations for places around the Bay of Fundy, PEI and Nova Scotia with a period of rain/snow mix and possibly, freezing rain around Thursday morning.
Newfoundland will also get a piece of the storm and, like Southern Maritimes, will see a similar situation Thursday night.
