Swine Flu
Looks like it could be a bad one. The news is reporting that the symptoms aren't as severe in the US as it has been in Mexico. I hate the flu of any magnitude. Stay healthy everyone, and wash your hands often. On Good Morning America they are reporting that there have been 20 cases reported. It ranges anywhere from California to Ohio. Plus it has spread to Canada and other countries overseas.

Re: Swine Flu
OK, this is gonna sound nuts, but I think I had this last week. Ohio is just two hours away so it's possible that it's spread this far. And last week I got SO sick. It didn't last long. But it was really, really bad for just a cold and I actually considered going to the emergency room on Sunday night. Then I decided that our emergency room was likely to just charge me a fortune and send me home. And by Monday morning I was a whole lot better and didn't even end up going to the doctor's office. In fact, my kids were teasing me because I was supposed to get an allergy shot on Tuesday but I was still sick so I didn't. I took Zaven in, but he's a teenager so I was comfortable letting him go in alone while I took a nap in the car. I told them I was too sick to be in a doctor's waiting room and they were laughing at me because that sounded so funny. But I explained that I didn't think I could handle additional germs and I didn't want to expose someone who was already sick to what I had.
Anyhow, I'm mostly over it. I actually hope that this is what I had because if it was, I'm probably immune to it now.

Re: Swine Flu
They are closing schools in San Antonio, whole districts.

It seems that the ones up North who got it have been to mexico, but yet have a less severe strain? Odd.
I will avoid any indoor crowd activities for the near future, the last thing i need is to be sick,

Here is a map of the suspected and confirmed cases. Hopefully it gets less and less severe as it spreads.

Re: Swine Flu
every old person I am kin to has called me to tell me to keep the kids away from my hogs.
I have told them all that my hogs are more likely to get it FROM the kids...
I thought I heard the folks in New York had been on vacation to mexico, or went there for something.
speaking of mexico, have y'all been checking your produce? I dont buy from Mexico, I dont like how they fertilize.. ACK!!

Re: Swine Flu
I'm in San Antonio, and the only district that closed is a city that is outside of San Antonio (where the confirmed cases of swine flu are found). So far.. haven't heard of closings in San Antonio yet! But, I'm freaked out already. Told my girls to wash, wash & wash some more!
Re: Swine Flu
I already told DH that if they find it here I am pulling Bnut out of school, not taking any chances.

Re: Swine Flu
I dont have to pull mine out of school, they do it for me... LOL
the CDC is talking about it on fox news. They have a few in New York. weird how its all over- but not with thousands of people.
They are telling folks to not go to Mexico.

I am, and so far the only one who's caught my flu (swine or otherwise) is Quinn and he has a much milder case, probably because he still nurses some and he's getting my antibodies. Whatever I had was really awful. I never even go to the doctor when I'm sick and I was trying to figure out how to get myself checked into the hospital.
Re: Swine Flu
They have closed down a school in Sacremento.
And I think one in New york. there are 40 cases in 5 states and like 28 more possible cases in New york.

Re: Swine Flu
I remember getting the Hong Kong flu during the epidemic in 1968. Knocked me out of circulation for a whole week! I certainly don't want any part of anything like that again.
Good ideas so far: wash hands frequently, avoid crowds, avoid Mexico
I would imagine that the reason the northern cases are lighter than the ones in Mexico might be because of the climate differences; hot in Mexico, but still relatively cool in Ohio, Kansas, and New York.
Stay safe, everyone!

Re: Swine Flu
Don't discount the effect of medication. A lot of the population in Mexico can't afford to go to the doctor, or only once they realize they're in trouble. In the US more can afford it, and of course the Canadians have healthcare for everyone. There are treatments and they appear to be effective, so if you suspect you have it, go ahead and call your doctor.
Re: Swine Flu
I fiqure its alot like west nile. We had a few die from it here in Jasper one year, and around that time BR got REALLY sick. Everyone else had colds and flu like symtoms, being the non alarmest that I am, we didnt go to the DR.
Then the next year it was bad again, everyone got sick, colds, or flu, or just icky. Someone was due shots, so I asked abotu it.
The Pediatrition told me that one in 3 or 5 people have it or got it, but with their immune systems being good, they just shrugged it off as a cold, the flu or what ever and were okay in a few days.
They did a study and tested a bunch of people and most had the antibodies for it, confirming that they had indeed gotten it, but faught it off.
I still keep my thermacell closeby, but thats more for the anti itch factor than the fear of the diesese.

Re: Swine Flu
So far it seems to be downstate in the city. If it comes any closer I will pulling mine from school as well.
Re: Swine Flu
Here is the CDC website. It was said that they update every hour. It gives a break down of states and how many cases have been reported.

Re: Swine Flu
Honestly, I think they should close the border to Mexico, they are checking for peole with symtpoms, but they cannot police the entire TX/Mexico border, too many swim across.
I figure if West Nile didn't get me, this won't............

Re: Swine Flu
There have been some cases in Canada, but none around here yet. The flu spreads so fast that I wouldn't be surprised to see it here soon though! Hopefully the fact that I'm a handwashing fanatic and make the kids wash their hands constantly too will help spare us.
Re: Swine Flu
Last I heard there were 4 cases in Nova Scotia, but they are all in the same High School. The cases are about 5ish hours away, and that is way too close for my liking.

I'd be a litte worried if I was traveling to a border state in the near future, too. Especially if I was near the border itself. Good luck on your family trip. I know you'll be watching the news closely in the next few days.

Regular flu symptoms. Some get more severe cases and others are getting milder cases.
Re: Swine Flu
I hope they are able to contain it. Right now it still seems possible to do. I just hope they don't get stupid. I think they should close the border, and all flights in and out, and scrub down any airplane that's been there.
