They finally declared the Swine Fluis now a pandemic outbreak. It just hit our state last week. The last I heard there were 26 or 27 cases in WV.

But they also said Don't panic. there are 2050 cases in TX, and 6 deaths so far, but really, it is a big state, and none in my county.....so I am not really concerned

My MIL just called and said oh BTW I forgot to tell you I have been exposed to swineflu last week. Nice of her to tell me this AFTER we were there this weekend and she let my son drink out of her ice tea bottle. On the phone she says yeah I felt feverish and had chills all weekend. Not a word BEFORE we went over there Sunday. Ugh I am not overly worried, but, I am pissed anyway.

Oh I HATE it when people do that! Why even bother to tell you after the fact? And how much effort would it have been to let you know before she exposed him?

Swine Flu invaded our small rural community this week. Sad
We have at least one confirmed case.

I am getting more and more nervous the closer we get to school going back in.

Everytime a passenger on my bus gets sick, within a few days I will be sick too. Sad

How serious are the most recent cases? I never hear about it any more, although they may mention it on the evening news. I normally watch in the morning. I heard that the kid who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films had Swine Flu, but they were able to shoot other scenes while he was out.

Last I read its hitting Great Britain very hard right now..as well as many other countries..

My question is will you take the vaccine? This is in my opinion experimental at best..

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=email_en&sid=a52Uaa6UqHsA
The vaccine being developed to combat a pandemic of swine flu will require multiple shots to provide immunity from the new virus and the added immunizations may overwhelm U.S. state agencies, health officials said.

Two injections will be required three weeks apart for swine flu, also known as H1N1, and a third will be needed for seasonal flu, health officials said at a meeting today at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta. Children younger than 9 years will need four shots, the CDC said.

The U.S. government has taken the unusual step of purchasing all of the swine flu vaccine, and the shots will probably be administered through vaccine clinics set up by state health organizations, the CDC said. The agency estimates that at least 50 million vaccine doses will be available in the U.S. by October 15, and enough vaccine to immunize everyone in the country will be available later in the season.

“Public health departments are under-funded and will get fatigued,” said William Schaffner, an influenza expert at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, in an interview at the flu conference. “One shot probably gives you very little immunity, 10 to 20 percent at most.”

If it were available I'd definitely want my college aged son immunized.

It really depends on the specific health conditions of your family, doesn't it. If you had someone already ill, like with cancer, I'd want everyone in the family to get it. If not, I'd want just those at high risk to get it.

I seriously believe that I had swine flu just before it made the news. I had a flu that hit me SO hard. I actually though of going to the emergency room and if I'd heard about swine flu at the time I would have gone. But I didn't think they'd take me seriously. I decided to try to wait it out and fortunately I felt a lot better not long after I got scared.

Our region has been pretty heavily hit, although we've not had deaths from it.

I am not worried about it, I figure as long as your are reasonably healthy you are good.
I honsetly think when bayley goes to the Dr he will test her, she is sick right now.

I had West Nile, right when everyone was scared and dying from it.....dh also had it and never even knew it.

I try to follow this closely..and my opinion varies by the day because in the back of my head I know that those who had the regular flu shot either weren't sick from this swine flu or the illness wasn't as bad..
Mind you studies aren't really available as this is a "rather new" virus but some pointed in the beginning that an immunity was formed in a persons body if they had have flu shots over a stretch of time..say 5 years..
But I haven't heard much more on it..
Another question I have is like with a regular flu shot..has this mutated? With a regular flu shot they sort guess which strain may be worse this year and that is the serum that is given each year.
So are they guessing that this will remain the same strain as last year? How fast is it mutating? Will a shot given in October not be effective in Dec because its mutated?
Will I also have to get a regular flu shot...any adverse effects if I have a combo of the two different shots?

The flu shot made no difference with the H1N1 flu, at least that is what our Dr says. He has had 4 patients die from it, and 3 had the flu shot, but they were also all elderly.

I have just decided I cant worry about it. We have all had the west nile. heck, other than BR being down with the 'flu' for a week, we cant fiqure out when we had it. But for some their body just fights it off really well.

Of couse, I try not to freak about much, its not like I could fix it if I did freak. LOL We had some cases here. and I know a few people that had it. But they always swore it wasnt in my county, and I only know cause I know folks who actually work at the Dr offices. Of course, I am in a county with very little investigative reporting, no TV stations, and only one paper. and they suck. LOL

Wow.. I honestly thought we were past this. I haven't heard anything in months other than the other day when they said they wouldn't have a vaccine out until Oct.

I expected it to be a big deal last year but now I don't see it as any worse than any other flu and no I won't take the vaccine.. Im one of those conspiracy theorists and dont' even see the point in creating a vaccine at this point in time..

I also realize.. I could be proved wrong... easily
