Are your neighbors renting or do they own the place?

I live in a very rural area. Someone bought some land and moved in a double wide mobile home. My husband seems to think it may have been the women's father. But we really don't know.
She is actually living on the property next to ours, but she is on the road and I am in the woods. We have 70 acres that goes to the road, but our drive goes a long way into the woods before you see our house. We can't be seen from the road, nor from any other house. That is how I have them and she doesn't know, even on the property next to me.

good

don't let her know.... it's the right thing..
if the rescue can't help..
call the shelter in the next town..
NOT your town
ask them about private rescues or if anyone is looking for that type of dog.

ask your vet for help... I always tried to find help for situations like this for clients

keep us posted.. this is a formidable group....we will help

Rescue groups do not put down animals- they find a way to fix the health issues of the animals. They usually have enough donations to cover things like this or they have vets who do pro bono work for them. Believe it or not, there are Vets out there who do donate their services. I would still look into one of the groups- I hate to think what the neighbor may do if she finds you have them. Then, on the other hand, maybe they were her hubby's dogs and she doesn't care for them. I am alwqays aware of the legal ramifications in a matter like this.

I just thought of this after watching Judge Judy (LOL)
Make sure you save EVERY receipt from your puppy expenses.
I do mean everything...vet...food...shampoo.
Make sure you take LOTS of before/after pictures.
You need to document everything!
If it comes down to it you'll be able to prove that you basically saved thier lives and they should stay with you.

I had a pure bred bull mastiff, He had both the mange (stress related, not catchable) and hip dysplacia, He lived for quite a while. We knew that eventually we would have to put him down.

My Blue healer is now suffering from hip and back problems. We give him... gluosamine. it helps ALOT.

chelle I just told my hubby last night that I am going to start giving them glucosamine lol!
I did not make any calls yesterday. My back was hurting from carrying the female (before the vet put her hip backl in place she didn't walk well). Also my husbnad was insisting on going to talk to the lady after work and I was waiting to see how that went. Before he could do so, his friend came down to talk to us about it. He gave us some details that made us see we have to keep this a secret and get the dogs out of the area. One thing we found out was that they bred these dogs themselves but currently only have these two pups. Them breeding them is really bad news because the mange is inherited from the mother. There is more, but we are now sure we can't keep them and need to get them out of this area. So I will have to start to get that done, but today I have tons of errands to run and my house resembles a dog pen and smells so nice too lol. In the mean time they are sooo improved. They look like different dogs. The female could hardly walk and is running and playing now. So wherever they go, they will be healthier when they get there.
One other upsetting thing I found out is that the woman has horses she is moving in soon. So help me God if those horses are not cared for properly she is getting turned in. Hubby and I, and his friends, decided this is her one chance. If we see horses in trouble she is getting turned in for sure! So the saga continues, sigh.

If you do that here they shut you down.

brandi, I live in the Ozarks, and in a remote rural area. There is no such thing as zoning here. If I would happen to live in city limits someplace, it might be different. In any case, they only had these two pups right now, no breeding stock.
We have to see where this goes, but we could contact a state cop we know who has found one of our dogs before. Our Lil Bit is a Katrina dog and got lost in a storm, twice actually ( freaked out and just ran) shortly after we brought her home. The cop's wife heard me on the radio looking for her and called me. The second time Lil Bit just showed up there and Carol Sue just called me when she did. They are big time animal lovers and I have thought about calling them for help, if anything more happens. They live a few miles from us. I am saving that for now though. He looks the part of a really mean cop, but is great to his friends. Maybe he could be talked into a scare the crap out of her talk due to an anonymous complaint. Hmmm, this feels a little evil, that it is not really me, so this is all freaking me out. Thanks for all of the support and kind words one and all I have a doggie issue - Page 2 820607

Honey, how can saving two animals from a lifetime of suffering be evil?
I wish I lived closer to you.
I'd do more than just give moral support.
When questioned about what happened you could just say:
"I don't know Mam, some biker chick rode through here with a couple of bulldogs strapped to her Harley. I think she had NC license plates."

One more question, I was about to call one of the numbers Brandi posted, but I am not really sure I should say I know who owns them. I so hate telling lies! What do yall think? The vet records show them as found as stray.

Honey, until she positively identifies them as the animals she owns you have no proof that they ARE her dogs. They did not have collars or implants showing that she owns them. She has not put out missing-dog posters. For all you know, she gave her dogs to a cousin and these two are strays. You have not stolen her property, and you do not have to lie. Tell the truth. "I found two sick and emaciated dogs in my neighborhood."

Our Bichon was having terrible pain when walking due to arthritis in his knee- the specialist told us to put him on chondroitin glucosamine, vitamin e and fish oil. It has done wonders for him. Prior to us doing that we were in the local vet's office constantly and the poor baby was on so many anti-inflammatories and dealing with all the side effects. If you get online into a Bulldog site, I bet you can find all kinds of helpful info.

Before we started him on this regime we had to carry him as he couldn't put any weight on the one leg- they kept telling us we would have to have the leg amputated. Well, I wasn't a believer in this additives until I saw how well he has done. The Chondroitin/glucosomine and fish oil is twice a day and the vitamin E is once a day. We mix it with his food and he always takes it. Good luck.

Plus don't think there is ever a FREE dog- our free dog has cost us in the thousands.

Those pups need a good home and you're helping them along the way - just think of it as a temporary stop on their journey to health and happiness. An underground railroad for dogs, if you will. Worse comes to worse, why in the world would you ever think they were your neighbor's dogs? She takes such good care of the plump, pampered one she already has. Goodness, that would be terrible to think your neighbor was capable of that. Wink

They are darlings and I agree, they will find a good, loving home in no time.

Post by Honey Fri Jun 06, 2008 7:23 pm

Ok, now I have lied Embarassed She knocked on my door and asked if I had seen two bulldogs. They were in my daughter's room and my four dogs were barking like lunatics. So I only opened the door a few inches and said, no, sorry. She left then. Not a word about here is my phone number, or I live up the road, nada, just left. We found her pampered dog hanging around our house about 20 minutes later, so Tory drove it back up to her house. They were in the yard and thanked her. Tory saw they had put a sign up on a piece of tin, hung on the big tree out front. It says 2 bulldogs missing. My husband listened to the radio, which is free to list lost or found animals, and they had a long list, but no bulldogs.
I went to the store and bought them tons of food, treats, bones, toys, vitamins and collars. They seem very happy. I did not get a chance to call the rescues, but my friend called who has a close contact at Petfinders.com. She is putting a call into her for me. Not sure sure when I will hear back on that though. I also recalled I have a contact at another rescue that saved Lil Bit in Katrina. That is in Pa though, but still intend to call them. The Petfinders lady is in Washington state, not close either, so they could end up anyplace I guess.
They go back to the vet tomorrow for another mange shot. I am wondering how much weight they will have gained in just a few days?
I really am a nervous wreck with this drama, but I do know in my heart it is the right thing to do. It is just tough to treat someone like that(even though she has it coming), for me and my hubby, but not tough to want to save these dogs.
Once again, thanks for listening, supporting me, and helping with suggestions. I feel very blessed right now Very Happy

You are doing the right thing..
They are totally helpless....

you are caring for them, feeding them and giving them medical treatment..
....wonder if you could give the ivermectin yourself??? that is probably what they are getting.. less cost...

When we go to the vet today, I will see what they are getting. Ivermectin is so easy to get here in cow country. I had no idea that is what it might be. Thanks kath, I will check on that.
Sent another email last night to a friend in Portland who helps with a dog rescue there. Figured I would try all the people I know first, can't hurt.

My, that unexpected visit would have been a little stressful. I'm sure you coped better than I would have. You'd hate to have to turn them back over to her though just as they're starting to get the help they need. You just know the woman would cease all further treatment for them.

Hopefully her other pooch will stop coming to snoop around your house, too. He must suspect something!
