Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
I thought I'd discuss this here because we a lot of members have children and teens. Plus we sort of know each other on a more personal basis. This is an article from another site:
The Central Kitsap school district has suspended a boy and girl, both 14, for engaging in oral sex in the back seat of a school bus.
The Kitsap Sun says another 14-year-old was suspended for recording the act on her cell phone.
The Kitsap County sheriff's office investigated and turned the case over to prosecutors who are deciding whether to file charges.
The sheriff's report says it happened May 27 when students from Klahowya Secondary School were on a field trip.
Principal Ryan Stevens didn't hear about it until a week later, and it was reported June 3 to the sheriff's office.[url=Local News | Teens had oral sex in Central Kitsap school bus | Seattle Times Newspaper The Central Kitsap school district has suspended a boy and girl, both 14, for engaging in oral sex in the back seat of a school bus. This disturbs me greatly because I grew when a girl's reputation was very, very important so she did things to protect it. Not that all obstained from sexual activity but doing it with any and everybody and doing THAT (lol) was not on the agenda.
What do you think and what do modern mothers tell their children?

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
All I know is that televison, magazines, and the media are fueling the fire. Look at the teen programs they are putting out on television, especially the reality shows that are shown on TV. They show young women getting pass out drunk at bars, people "hooking up" without knowing each others names. I have watched shows where the girls say that they will do whatever the guy wants so he thinks they are "hot", including making out with other girls. The music industry doesn't help, look at a lot of the songs being put out today, they are all innuendos "going down" "lick my lollipop", and "milkshakes". Some aren't even innuendos at all, they flat out sing about sex without any censorship. Mothers and parents can give their children good advice, but these children feel pressured to go along with the "norm" because they are the ones immersed in this environment everywhere they go. Tyra Banks has done a lot of shows on promiscuity, and teen sex, drugs, etc. Many of these kids have sex because all their other friends have done it and badger or make fun of them if they don't. Girls have sex because they are worried their boyfriends will leave them for another girl that will "put out". I guess a lot of that hasn't changed over the years, but what has changed is that moral standards are disappearing. In today's day and age there is an excuse for why every behavior is acceptable
These women that are portrayed on televison are all dumb barbie looking bimbos who drink and sleep around to excess. The guys that are portrayed are always talking about how hot those types of girls are. It's all about how "hot" their bodies are and "hooking up" with them. Teens are watching this and this behavior is glamorized by television, radio and magazines. Frankly I am glad that I don't have any more teenage girls to raise in today's world...its immensely scary.

I also have to make a comment about some moms nowadays too. The partying moms, the "cool" moms. The ones who want their kids friends to think they are cool so they let the kids drink in their homes, have sex in their homes, etc. They dont' help matters either. They keep talking about wanting to be their kids best friend, I say be a parent..you have plenty of time to be your kids best friend when they are older and grown up. These parents make it hard for other parents who are trying to raise their children to have some respect for themselves. For example this is a post I found on Yahoo answers:
Open Question »
How do I tell my husband that his 12 year old son got a girl pregnant....abortion?
My stepson has a girlfriend. They write love notes back and forth during class, I drop them off at the mall, restaurants, carnivals, etc to go on dates, I even caught them sneaking out. But I know he loves her and I know she loves him.
My husband is adamantly against their relationship. I didn't see a problem with them being together and going on dates, so I would sneak behind my husbands back and drop them off where ever they wanted to go. I even bought them condoms just in case because I knew they weren't going to listen to a stupid "no sex" talk.
My stepson told me a month ago that she's pregnant. I've kept this from my husband. Unfortunately, her parents are coming over tonight to discuss everything.
The problem is that my husband is the only one out of all of us who doesn't know about the pregnancy. I wasn't going to tell him because since she's so young (13 years old), I was hoping she'd miscarry.
They are all coming over tonight, so now I'm trapped and I don't know what to do. Not only do I have to tell my husband about the pregnancy, but I want the girl to have an abortion, but her parents are catholic so I'm not sure what they will say.
I'm 36 and not ready to be a grandmother. Please help me get out of this mess.

I think this speaks for itself about the point I am trying to make with these types of parents..

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
For pete's sake, her biggest problem is that she doesn't want to be a grandmother at 36???? She is a very stupid woman to begin with!
I agree about the media. Has anyone seen the commercial where a guy talks about a dating site? In the last scene, the girl he met is giving him a booty dance against his crotch. This ad on during prime time TV. I was totally disgusted and angered.

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
I think for some kids it is a status symbol, kinda "hey, I did this and it is on Youtube". I wonder what the parents are teaching these kids, or if they are absent entirely.

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
A big part of the problem for me is that when some kids are so open about sex, they expose all the ones who are not being active. How many kids on that bus were exposed to their activity? There were bound to be some who didn't want to see it and were uncomfortable. And now those kids are dealing with increased pressure to be sexually active before they're ready. (And by my standards, you aren't ready for sex until you're ready for STDs, pregnancy, and a monthly electric bill.)
Meanwhile, I have a 14 year old girl who was recently kissed by a cute boy that she's friends with. Only he has a girlfriend. My DD asked him, "Don't you have a girlfriend?" And he admitted he did. So she decided that she wouldn't date him even if he broke up with his girlfriend because he wasn't trustworthy. If he kissed her while dating another girl, what would he be doing while he was supposed to be dating her? It's hard to believe that she's the same age as the kids on that bus!

It sounds like your daughter is very intelligent ,and very mature Karen! Good for her! My oldest niece is 14 and very active in sports teams. I don't think she's even kissed a boy yet, even though she is really beautiful and has a gorgeous body. She's very into her studies and her sports. I think kids need to be very busy to keep their minds off other things, especially nowadays!

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
I agree with Kelly, she wrote a very good post about the problem in general. While it's disturbing. It isn't shocking. I look at my nine year old everyday and hope to keep her a "little girl" as long as possible but at the same time I have to deal with all the crap being thrown at her daily. It sucks. Then mix in the parents who think it is all "cute and fun" and you have a real mess.
She is in the third grade.. I have already heard from other parents about boys on the playground making oral sex gestures, kids smoking, etc.. and we live in a small town.. not a big city. It's pretty scary and when the other parents don't care.. omg.... I am so wishing I had taken Chelles stance and homeschooled from day one.
I also know a lot of kids who were homeschooled.. not putting Chelle in this mix because she is VERY good at teaching her kids responsibility.. better than I am as a matter of fact.. but some of the homeschooled kids I ran across were in a huge pickle... Im talking about a 22 year old male who didn't have a clue how to clean the bathroom when he was asked by his employer.. I am willing to bet all of Chelles kids already know how to do this but in this instance.. this kid wasn't the first or the last homeschooled kids we ran across who was clueless. It just gave a bad name to homeschooling in my head.
My point is.. it's a tough choice either way...

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
One thing I meant to say but forgot. I think that another aspect of the problem is that while the media is bombarding teens, tweens, and younger with adult images, most families are trying to pretend that their teens are younger. My grandparents and their parents all married in their teens. It was expected that an 18 or 20 year old would behave like an adult in every fashion. They would marry, have kids, have jobs, have houses, do housework and household repairs, pay bills, and generally take responsibility for themselves. But today's teens aren't expected to be responsible in most families. We see our teens as kids. I'm not saying that's wrong. But the mix of parents pampering and catering to their teen and even adult children and the media pushing sex, alcohol, and other adult vices means that we have a generation of kids who have the bad habits of adults without any preparation for handling the consequences of those actions. If you were 17 and having sex a few generations ago, you were probably married and had your own home and paid your own bills, etc. If you're 17 and having sex now, you probably still live at home, don't have a job, and aren't in a stable relationship.
I don't know what the right answer is. I do remember being a teen and I'm well aware that they have a sex drive. I also know that it's not a good idea for them to have kids as young as my grandparents did. The risk of miscarriages and prematurity is higher in teen moms.
I think that maybe we need to expect more of our kids. Not as much as expecting them to be completely independent. But enough to prepare for independence.

i think the teens today are bored, not much is expected from them so they don't strive for their best. Then they get bored, start drinking beer, leads to marijuana.. etc etc etc

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
Karen I think you are right for the most part. It's a tough situation. I have a 27 year old dd who believes completely in the the things I have taught and is now worried that by the time she is married and done with school that she won't be able to conceive.. I have a 26 yr old Son who calls weekly wondering if he is waiting to late and who has a wife who is ready to have a baby. I have a 22 yr old single mom with her son living with me who still believes she knows all there is to know. PLUS I have a NINE year old who has been determined that she should just adopt since she was 6 and who recently started asking if she could adopt if she didn't get married and who is thinking through every aspect of childbirth.
The last kid makes it hard to blame it all on the media and video games and other peoples choices in general. She is truly thinking it all through. I can't and wont' take credit for any of my kids choices and at the same time can't blame it all on outside resources. She is looking at it all from peer pressure, media and her parent's viewpoints and making her own choices.
Maybe Im just lucky but I think it is the same for all kids... just maybe that some stop short at looking at all the choices and others give it too much thought?

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
One of the things that kept me from doing some things was disappointing my parents. They made it easy to respect them because they were responsible, laid out what they expected of me, punished when necessary while providing a quality lifestyle for the family. I never wanted either of them ashamed of something I did. Not to say I was an angel or anything. Sometimes while watching a tv program or reading something I will think, "this person has no one who will disappointed in them".
Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
I think that its soo main stream (music TV, movies etc) that kids dont see the specialness of it.
Iknow I didnt. of course, I had a mother who was divorced 6 times, and always had a boyfriend, livein, etc.
This attitude is one reason I do homeschool. Its bad enough when my 4th and 5th graders come home and ask me what a BJ is, or what someone means when they call a descriptive name of a sexual position. But when my kinderkid asks me what 'gettin someof that ass' means, its time to walk away from the trash can. otherwise, you will start to smell like it.
dont get me wrong. My kids are still exposed to it some. I mean crappy parents send their kids to bible school too. in bretts class they had a contest for something. Brett won. He won a T shirt. he came back out of the backroom where he had went with the teacher to get it, and the kid beside him (11 year old) wouldnt quit saying "I know you got more than just a t shirt.. you got a handjob too" and wouldnt stop. I refused to explain it.
*got to go to bed, aaaarrrrrrrrgggg- will finish my thoughts tomorrow... LOL ***

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
But in all honesty, I do blame society. You cant watch ANY tv with out viagra comercials, even educational stuff on the discovery channel. I sensor my kids TV to the point that we dont even watch it anymore.
I am not a prude, and do watch everything from two and a half men, to united states of Tara, and californication. BUT, they dont.
BR and I counted the sexual refrences one night in the monday night line up (how I met your mother, two and a half men, accidentally on purpose, and big bang theory.) and it was astrinomical. I wish I had written down the number.
I'm not even comfertable watching theshows with my parents in the room. LOL
Yes, 100 years ago people were married and having kids by 16. BUT, like was said earlier. They actually worked instead of sitting in the house. They KNEW what life was. My grandfather worked before school and after school on the farm.
at 8 or 9 years old my great uncle got on a horse and rode to a town down the road a peice (what is now about 60 miles by road) to round up cattle that had gotten away from the herd and bring them home.
I'll be perfectly honest. I blame the 'greatest generation' This is how I see it. Every generation wants their kids to work a little less hard for things, have life a little easier and enjoy things. Well, the greatest generation was born with out electricity, and the modern convinces. They worked hard as children, yes they played, but they did it after chores. They milked cows, they hoed gardens, they cut wood. When they grew up and got jobs, when they went to war, they came home and decided "my kids dont have to work hard like that" and they basicly didnt make them. The next generation for the most part was not taught to work like they had. They were bought cars, they were waited on by mom in her apron buying baby food in a jar. Washing clothes was eaiser, so it wasnt an all day affair with everyone pitching in. So when they 'grew up' and most became responsible and got jobs, they made their kids do even less. they were thrust into a world where they didnt realize how hard it was, mom had made it look easy- because for her it was easy. MUCH easier to cook a meal with a convection oven, with frozen foods it was no longer a 3 hour affair, etc. Well, that generation, the 'greatest generations' kids raised their kids to do even less, but to get more.
Look at everything, credit card debt. loans to buy things you cant afford. this was unheard of in the 40's and 50's. BUT those kids born in that time wanted what mom and dad had, but for the most part didnt have the work ethic of their parents. they didnt realize that mom and dad had worked hard for years, saved and scrimped, sewed the clothes, grew gardens etc for all they had. So the next generation just charged it. or over extended their budgets for it.
When THEIR kids come along, they see that mom and dad work a little, play alot and dont see the debt. They see that they are getting everything their heart desires, for doing nothing. How many of the kids nowdays do you see with an Ipod, cell phone, class ring, new car, 100.00 jeans, etc actually worked one little bit for them? sure they might work at Mcdonalds, BUT, thats for their OWN spending money-
50-60years ago, you got maybe a cakefor your birthday. a new pair of shoes, or for Christmas you MIGHT get a new gun, or sled, or bike. Now parties are cakes that cost 200.00, new cell phones, new Ipods, new 200.00 shoes, in ONE night. And nothing is sacred anymore. 60 years ago women put on jeans for the first time, and rolled them up. hemlines were below the knee. Now, you are looking at someones thong panties everytime they drop their cell phone. You see someone's belly ring when they run their hands through their hair, and you pray they dont sneeze because a boob will fall out.
Dont get me wrong. I wear low ride jeans. I have a belly ring, and couldnt live with out a push up bra. BUT, I also know that people are desensitized to the alure of the female form. Its only natural that you've seen your first topless woman before your 13, either on TV or whereever, so that is not a milestone you are excited about on your first date at 16.
I also think that parents are not as involoved in their kids lives, and kids in turn (daughter especially, cause boys are just horny) get 'love' where they can. They think that giving it up will get it for them. they think thats what your supposed to do. I mean mom does it every weekend with her new boyfriend right? Dad left mom for that hot little number at the office. why not be the hot little number and get all the guys to loose their minds over you?
I am guilty of that. My daughters birthday party was yesterday. she got a 150.00 cake. She got a new gun, She got 4 new outfits, a couple of barbies, 2 new pair of shoes, and a tiara. She has PINK hair for Petes sake. But I work very hard to balance it all. I think its a little easier for me. My family doesnt have alot of money, all the clothes had a clerence tag on them, My kids dont see my cakes as being expensive party cakes, they are just what mom does. and they do work. They have to. My kids are spoilt. They have more than any kid needs. I swear they have everything. But, I'm reminded by them daily that they are so mistreated. no phones, no games, no TV's in their rooms. (they had them, but the DVD players broke and they were for movies only- NO satalite. )
I remind them, they have the forrest, guns, and animals to play with. They have a rabbit AND a freakin Horny toad in the house. But ya know- even that in itself is work. The boys have to gather harvester ants, crickets, and meal worms daily for the toad. LOL I buy a little bit of it. But not much. I only buy some of his daily requirements for those days that I keep them away from the house and they cant hunt and gather food.

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
Great point, Chelle... One would think the church would be a safe place away from that but you are right. Considering some of the stories I've heard about adults at church, yep, it's no wonder.
Doctors have published reports that early sexual activity in girls promotes cervical cancers. The least parents could do is be concerned about that. But more and more stories are published of other horrors in parenting too. One "mother" socked her son in the stomach, in front of police, because the child didn't want her to leave. She was leaving them alone in the house to go pursue her career as a stripper in another state. Not just for the night or week but forever because she was tired of them and was taking off with her boyfriend.
I am so sorry for the kids who have to grow up with these ill-treated children. The world is gonna be one heck of a place after a while.
I grew up in a family of woman who while not afraid of relationships were real big on decency. My friends and I are very concerned about the new attitudes towards sex because they were raised the same way.
I guess it's time to do the village thing and get out there to work with at least some girls to give them a different point of view. I can't take this anymore.

Re: Censored- Kids suspended from Kitsap School Bus
THis isn't about sex, but what does this tell you about today's kids?
My SIL in Alabama has three kids. The new baby (about 2 weeks old), my nephew who's 7, and my neice who is from her first marriage. My neice lives at home and has dropped out of college and doesn't work. She wants to be an artist, I think. She is 21, pays no rent, utilities, or even for food. You'd think that she would be helping her mom with dishes, laundry, diaper changes, and any other chores. Nope. She will sometimes hold the baby when he's fussy. But she's not doing any real work.
They had done a c-section on my SIL and decided to remove a lot of her scar tissue from her previous emergency c-section while they had her already on the operating table. So she essentially had two operations done at once. My MIL went to stay with them for a while to help. But she wanted to come back to Kentucky because she knew I'd need a sitter while my mom was in the hospital for her heart surgery. So when Scott drove down to get my MIL and he took Caly with him and left Caly in Alabama to help out.
We're paying Caly double her regular allowance to help out with SIL's laundry and dishes while she's there. Caly only gets $2.50 a week normally so we're paying her $5 a week while she's there. SIL knows she's getting a bit extra and that I want her to earn the money so she'll feel proud. SIL doesn't know that it's only an extra $2.50 because I knew she'd think I was being unreasonable. I'm NOT. Laundry and dishes aren't that hard and these people are letting her come stay in their home when they're under a great deal of extra stress. Not only that, but they are family and you do what you can to help family. I wouldn't feel guilty if I'd told her to go and help out for free. And she wouldn't have said a word if I did. She was THRILLED to get an extra $2.50 for just doing a few more loads of laundry than she does at home.
But what gets me is that my neice is plenty old enough to realize that her mom needs help. She's old enough that no one should have to come and take care of her mom. She's right there, already in the house with nothing else to do.
Then the other day Caly called home to visit and she sounded SO tired. She had stayed up half the night. It turns out that my neice had gotten her first paying art job, doing a sign for the local karate place. Only she wasn't sure she'd get it done in time. So Caly had stayed up half the night to help her finish it.
Yup. My neice isn't paying rent, utilities, or for the food she eats. She isn't helping out around the house while her mom is sick and trying to take care of a newborn. And now she's hooked Caly into doing her work for her? She didn't offer to pay Caly for the work, or offer to pay some of her profits towards rent to her parents. She's just taking the money and letting other people do things for her.
I felt like telling Caly to demand money for the work she did. But I don't want to give my SIL any additional stress right now and I know that I'd only be starting trouble in someone else's house by doing that.
But I'm so irrate with this girl. And I'm so thankful that my own kids are not that way. Like Chelle I spoil mine for their birthdays and they have much more than they need. But by God they would NEVER be allowed to treat me the way my neice treats her parents. Their asses would be sitting on the curb. Not only that, but they never would WANT to treat me that way. I look at the difference between my 21 year old neice who won't get up off her ass to help out her own mom and my 14 year old daughter who is thrilled to make an extra $2.50 to do three loads of laundry, two loads of dishes, some babysitting of her 7 year old cousin, some picking up of toys, and some diaper changes every week for three weeks running.
Plus Caly called me from Alabama to ask if she could watch Shaun of the Dead on DVD because it was R rated. She's hundreds of miles away with no one to tattle on her and she called to ask. And when I said no she sounded so disappointed that I knew she actually wasn't going to watch it. If she'd been planning on watching it anyway she wouldn't have been so bummed.
So my long-winded point is that all those times I wanted to spoil my kids, to give in when they whined for something, to indulge them when they were feeling sad or sick, to splurge on them for no reason... all those times when I made them tow the line and I hated doing it and felt guilty... those times were what gave them the character they have now. And not only is my life better for it in countless ways, THEIR lives are better for it. They're happier and more productive and even more joyful because I didn't wimp out on the hard part of being a parent. My SIL indulged every whim that my neice had... and now my neice is an unemployed drop-out with no job qualifications who had to have a 14 year old help her finish her work. She is in for a VERY rough road because already her family is realizing that things aren't changing and that she'll never be ready to move out until they kick her out. So in the near future she'll be a homeless unemployed drop-out with no job qualifications. Giving her everything essentially became the same as giving her nothing.
