my mom is having surgery
A while ago I posted that my mom was having trouble wi
th her heart valves. Well they've decided to go ahead and do heart surgery to try to repair or replace two of her valves. Surgery is first thing Thursday morning. She's not a candidate for the minimally invasive surgery. This will be a full on open heart deal. In a way, I'm glad they're doing it now. She has no blockages or other health problems. No diabetes or high blood pressure, either. She's in good health except for the valves. So I think she'll do well in surgery. Plus this will help her feel better day to day once she's healed. My only concern is that she develops allergic reactions to a lot of medications. I don't want her to have a reaction to the anesthesia.
Anyhow, prayers and positive thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: my mom is having surgery
We'll pray that things go well. As you mentioned it sounds like she is for the most part in good health which will ensure less/if any complications at all. We will be praying and thinking about all of you on Thurs. Post as soon as you have any news..

I'll also be praying for her Karen. If she has had surgery before with no reaction to the anesthesia I'm pretty sure it'll be ok. Just make sure her doctors know her medical history..ex. what she's allergic to,very important. Let us know how she's doing when you can.

Re: my mom is having surgery
Thank you so much! Mom had the surgery yesterday morning and is doing great. She had two valves worked on and they were able to repair both instead of replacing them. That's great news because there's no chance of rejection or her needing to take anti-rejection drugs her whole life.
She didn't have any reactions to the anesthesia during the surgery which was a huge relief. In a surgery she had several years ago she did have a reaction and her heart stopped and she had to be shocked. This time everything went perfectly. She's already sitting up some, has been out of bed, is talking, and drinking clear liquids. She says her pain is OK but she's exhausted. She's very clear minded and is just doing great. I'm on my way to visit her now but wanted to stop in and thank you guys for the prayers because they worked!

Re: my mom is having surgery
I can remember the first time I saw my dad after his bypass surgery. He looked so pink and healthy. It was a total surprise after such an invasive surgery.

Re: my mom is having surgery
My husbands grandmother had a quadruple bypass a month ago. I too was shocked at how well she looked afterward. Far better than his uncle who had a triple bypass 4 years ago, he looked very sickly for a long long time.
I'm very glad everything went smoothly for your mom Karen : ) I hope her recovery is as well.

Re: my mom is having surgery
Is she out of ICU yet? and is her stomache feeling better? still praying for her and you. I know its hard to deal ith all the running and exhaustion of having someon in the hosp.
Re: my mom is having surgery
Thank you! She is feeling better but is still in the ICU. Today she said she was in a little pain so she asked for an ibuprofen. They offered morphine or codeine but she said no. She hadn't had anything for pain in a day and a half so one ibuprofen would do. I can't believe she had open heart surgery only three days ago!
Re: my mom is having surgery
So glad she's so much better! They can't give her ibuprofen for a while because of the surgery.Ibuprofen is in the aspirin family and it can destroy platelets and hinder healing. tell her to ask for tylenol with codeine, either 15 or 30 milligrams,it will get rid of all the pain and won't knock her out like morphine.I hate morphine

Re: my mom is having surgery
They ended up giving her a small dose of ibuprofen because she's had trouble with tylenol in the past. She has aodd reactions to medications. Tylenol gives her a blinding headache.
