What are some good ones? Empty What are some good ones?

Post by KellyM Thu May 20, 2010 2:19 pm

I don't drink much, but have taken up occasional drinking since Wynonna moved in with Dan and all the drama, it helps relax the nerves. Once in a while when I am really stressed I will have a few. I am a sissy, about all I have found that I really enjoy drinking is the Grape Smirnoff Ice. I am looking for a hard drink that doesn't taste strongly of alcohol. I was looking at some stuff yesterday called Watermelon pucker (I think) and then a friend told me Blue Hawaiians are good. Anyone have any recommendations for a drink that tastes more sweet or fruity than alcoholic, or if you have tried the ones I have mentioned are they any good? I am not looking for any milk drinks such as mudslides or whatnot, just summery, fruity type ones.

I like Mint Juleps too, and Mimosa's, although they are generally a brunch thing, they work all day....add a shot of vodka

I like a nice cosmo. Usually I just drink vodka and cranberry juice though. Right now I am doing a true lemon study. So I am adding a packet of true lemon to the cranberry and vodka.
You can mix vodka with any juice or whatever type of drink you like. If you like tea, you can mix it with juice and tea.

I get mine at Costco, but the grocery stores sell it. The new Margarita stuff is pretty darn good and the Lemonade versions.

I'm strickly wine, Chardonnay.... I like the dry whites. The drinks you mention all have a lot of sugar in them... which if overdone can bring on some really nasty headaches or hangovers (even if not over done).

Camomile tea is a good de-streser/relaxer.

I have tried wine, and frankly I have tried many different ones and haven't found one yet that doesn't taste like what I imagine paint thinner would taste like. I have also tried numerous teas people have recommended, and though chamomile may be a good destresser I don't really care for tea. The only tea I like (which isn't really tea at all) is Nestea with lemon. I know the drinks I mentioned are sweet, I don't plan on having a whole slew of them...probably just two at the most at any one time.

I like a white russian, but since you're not looking for milky drinks, I'd recommend a Spumate (sweet fruity champagne). I don't like wine either, but Spumates are sweet enough for me to enjoy them. Asti Spumante is nicer, but Grand Spumantes are also good and much cheaper.

I havent tried that Karen, but I may give it a try. If you don't care for wine and like it than I may too. I think I will also try the Blue Hawaiians too. I had some amazon credit so I bought myself a pitcher and glass set, (pitcher and 6 sangria glasses) and a 4 bottle pack of curacao (it was cheaper to buy in the 4 pack and the 4 pack had free supersaver shipping). It's not like it spoils or anything. I think I will pick up a bottle of the Spumante to try. I like winecoolers which are fruity and bubbly so I will probably like that. Now I am just waiting for taxes to come back so we can get our patio set and I can sit outside and have a summery drink and sit back and relax and enjoy the new house and the summer!

Blended Margaritas are a favorites..

A favorite fruity that I LOVE: Washington Apples 1 part Crown Royal (if you want a cheaper alternative try Black Velvet maybe?) 1 part Apple Pucker, a little sweet and sour and two parts cranberry juice.. YUMMY

The Apple and Watermelon puckers are very good by themselves over Ice to sip.. they taste like jolly ranchers.

There are also the old standbys.. Vodka mixed with OJ or Cranberry or half and half with the juices..

Actually, I just got to looking on kmart.com and they have some patio sets on sale. We don't need a big one, because that would interupt the flow of traffic from in and out of the house, a table and 4 chairs will suffice. If we have more company than that I have a patio couch and chair coming from my mom as soon as I can go get it. There is a red flowery kind of one that while it wouldn't be my first choice, would go with the color of the deck. I have seen the actual set into our kmart and the cushions are thick and the set is solid. I would not get the flowered umbrella though. I would get a solid color umbrella. I know there are nicer sets out there, but I don't want to spend several hundreds of dollars on a patio set right now. The set is on sale right now for $199. and we would have to buy the umbrella seperately. Even though taxes haven't come back I was thinking that I had saved some money in hopes of maybe finding a set at a garage sale. I told hubby that if he wanted to buy it now before it goes off sale that I would pay a little over half of it. I am hoping he agrees..

Just a couple more thoughts.... if you buy the patio set, and if it's a glass top, consider the kinds of wind you get. Around our parts when the wind comes along, which seems to be often, they're known to topple over and break (neighbors on both sides)....but if wind/storms are not an issue, than 199 for 5 piece set sounds reasonable.

As for Spumanti... that takes me back 37 years. Chuck and I drank that on our honeymoon... back in the days before I knew good wines. Not that Asti Spumaniti is a good wine, but talk about a bzz LOL To this day, I can barely deal with any kind of champaign, which Spumati is in that category... fizzy! LOL

I love the Sangria set, Kelly. I just bought a bottle of Madria Sangria and it had a hang tag with an expanded recipe on it. You mix
3 cups of the Madria, 2 oz of Brandy, 2 oz Triple Sec, sliced lemons, oranges, peaches and/or apples, and 1 cup ginger ale in a pitcher.

Since you stocked up on the curacao, search for recipes that feature that and you'll come up with some good ideas. DH has an app that he uses with his ipod touch to find drink recipes. We are not big drinkers, either.

I also wanted some Tiki glasses too, they would be kind of cool for when we entertain sometimes. But I didn't have enough amazon $$ to get the tiki glasses too. Back when I turned 21 and was experimenting with the world of drink..lol I was hooked on Headhunters...which I might actually try again after all this time. Anyway, they used to serve the headhunters in a tiki glass much like these ones...

Love the patio set!

My first wine out the shoot (when turning 21) was Boone's Farm... I didn't know it was even produced anymore.... good times! Apple was my pick!

Thanks bizeedee.....We don't have an umbrella yet, but when we do get one I will make sure to not leave it open. They aren't cheap and that would be too expensive of a lesson for me to learn.

What a beautiful set! I love outdoor furniture but I never buy it. Our dogs would destroy it in no time. We make do with a porch swing and a set of chairs that stack so that we can store them inside.
