Family friend was in an accident Empty Family friend was in an accident

Post by aurora04 Sun Jun 21, 2009 7:17 pm

Friday morning a good friend of my family was killed in an accident. He was driving his tractor down the road and according to the paper he pulled in front of a tractor-trailer truck. The driver of the truck did everything she could to avoid hitting him, but there is only so much those big trucks can do quickly. I feel so bad for her as well. I can't even imagine what she is going through. I hope she finds comfort in the fact it wasn't her fault, it was an accident and that she did everything she possibly could to avoid it.

The whole community is in shock over this. George was an avid volunteer, singer/songwriter, and an overall wonderful person. I have know George and his family since I was 14 and joined 4-H. I just adore him and his family. His wife actually fixed my sister's wedding dress for her (she bought it and her wedding was post-ponned and by the time they got married, it was too small for her). The Canadian (I believe, if not Nova Scotia's) 4-H council just adopted one of his songs as the official 4-H song. He was very active in the local exhibition plus numerous other events. The community will not be the same without George!

Our 4-H council is wanting to do a scholorship in his name. They are going to try to raise $50 000 for this, so it may take a couple years of fund raising, but this is something they really want to accomplish for him. George was always in the mind-set of we had to spend the money (our 4-H council's money) on the kids. The kids earned that money (fundraising, etc...) so they should get the enjoyment of it. It shouldn't just be sitting in the bank collecting small interest for nothing to be done with it.

I'm keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers today especially. I can't even begin to imagine their pain plus losing him only 2 days before Father's Day. He left behind a wife, kids, and grandkids. He will be greatly missed by everyone.

His loss will be felt for years in the community. There aren't that many people who give of themselves that way. Heroes are hard to come by.

I heard this on the radio.
We are farmers too and when we heard this on the news it makes us more aware of other vehicles on the road.
I know when I am on the road with the tractor I am very nervous because other drivers are very impatient.
It is farming season people. Please, please give us a break when you see a tractor on the road. Chances are that we aren't going very far before we turn and are out of your way.

I am so sorry dawn! thats awful. And your right about the truck driver. I pray everyday that my husband wont get in an accident. Sometimes we forget how slow a tractor will go and can do stupid things on them.

Valerie, your right, I drive the tractor on the road and even have to cross a large interstection sometimes, I am well withiin my rights, but their is always someone who has to pass me at 100mph and try to blow me off the road. Its always scary.

Thanks everyone!

People are worried that 4-H in our area is going to go downhill after this. George always seemed to be the glue that kept things going. We are so hoping that is not the case! George's memory deserves to be carried on in 4-H. It won't be the same, not even close, but we can't lose 4-H now!

I agree that people need to be aware of tractors on the road. We get behind a tractor every once in awhile, and it doesn't bother us in the least. Yes, we might get put off schedule by a few minutes, but oh well. 9 times out of 10 (on our road anyway), a tractor will move to the side a bit (when it's safe) for the cars behind to pass, but the times they don't, then we deal with it.

I'm sorry to hear this. It's been a long time since I've driven a tractor on the road, but it always used to scare me when a car would go blasting past me.
