My dryer died Empty My dryer died

Post by BuzzNut Tue Jun 02, 2009 12:21 pm

A few weeks ago someone had been talking about their dryer going out on them.
I think I bragged on mine, and probably shouldn't have. Mine did die, and we thought it was a belt that could have been a quick fix. It wasn't the belt, it looked brand new. I hated to get rid of this dryer, but no one seemed to know what was wrong.
Sooo, until we could find someone to really look at it and get it fixed, I put an ad on a local freecyle group on yahoo.

A few days went by and someone emailed me that they had one that they bought new in 2005. But since they had moved to a place that had free gas, they bought a gas dryer, and their electric one was set aside. She said that it worked when they got their gas dryer. She offered it to me, so we went and picked it. It cost me $5 in gas to go get it, so even if it didn't work after being stored for two years, I wouldn't be out much.

We hooked it up a few days ago, and it runs like a new one. Dh thought I was crazy to put an ad on freecyle, but I showed him it does pay off to ask.

How awesome that worked out for you, I'm glad! Freecycle is a great thing...
I put an ad on my local freecycle yesterday for some garage doors. Mine are falling apart and I can't afford to get any right now, especially after putting a new furnace in last week. I am hoping someone might be replacing their old ones this summer with new ones and might be generous enough to give their old ones away. I don't care whether they have windows or not, or what color they are, as long as they arent' falling apart like mine are.

The only thing we had to do was change out the electric plug with the one we took out of the laundry room. It had a different 220 plug. It was an easy fix, and we have a dryer that works. I loved the one that went bad, but right now I need a working dryer. You never know how much you need something until you don't have it.

The woman I got it from said she loved freecyle, and was glad that she could get it out of her way. I did email her and let her know that it did work and was working great.

Gary asked me what else I could get for free. lol

Last year I was able to clear out some room in my garage by putting stuff on freecycle. I had a garage sale one weekend and whatever didn't sell I put on freecycle the next weekend. I was able to get rid of most of it. Actually I am going to have to put some stuff on it soon, I have an old couch and chair, and my old kitchen chairs to get out of my garage. They aren't a newer style, so I wouldn't make anything if I tried to sell them, but they are in good condition I am sure someone could use them.

I don't have any experience at all with freecycle but it sounds like it has a lot of possibilities. When we bought our 2nd house, there were these big - dividers? in the basement. They were blue with silver metallic legs to stand t hem up. The divider went down to about a foot off the ground and they stood about 6 feet tall altogether. There were 2 of them. I have no idea what they were used for, but we really didn't need them. We could easily have lived without them and maybe someone knew what they were for and could have used them.

I give away stuff on freecycle sometimes, I used to more often. The one here is insane, people asking for big ticket items " leather couch, must be black and brand new" etc.....
When you post something you get 1937 emails asking for it, and some threatening if they do not get it....so i have about stopped.

I am glad it works as it was intended for someone though

There isn't alot posted on ours, maybe because we are a small community. I really and truely didn't think I would get any replies, and just threw it out there. I must say I feel fortunate and appreciative to have gotten the reply I did.
I just seen yesterday that the woman that administers ours was asking for a small camper that was usable or needed minor repairs. I guess anything is possible as long as someone may have something to give away.
I wouldn't be bold enough to ask/request that it be brand new though.

Erin I thought of your post when I read this email this morning from the admin of our freecycle group. The past two days have been filled with one person asking for a ton of stuff, even pigeons in cages, chickens, sewing notions and patterns and yarn for crocheting, you name it she was asking. I had 20 emails of just this one person.
And this is what she posted today:
WANTED: COUCH, QUEEN SIZED BED FRAME WITHOUT RAILS, OR WHOLE KING SIZED OUTFIT, 6-8 BALES OF HAY, CAN BE OLD NEEDED FOR GARDEN, 2-3 TRUCK LOADS OF MANURE, LARGE WATER TANKS, KITCHEN TABLE, NO CHAIRS, DESKS, ROCK OR GRAVEL, SMALL BUILDING OR SHED THAT CAN BE TOOK DOWN N PUT BACK TOGETHER, PIGEON LOFT OR CHICKEN HOUSE, 2 BABY GOATS PREFERABLY PIGMY BUT WILL CONSIDER OTHERS, BOTH SAME SEX PLEASE, IF ANY OF THESE ITEMS ARE AVAILABLE WE WOULD PAY GAS MONEY TO HAVE THEM HAULED TO US AS WE DO NOT HAVE A TRUCK OR ANY WAY OF HAULING LARGE ITEMS, THANKS IN ADVANCE,

Here's the email the admin sent:
Please remember when you are posting to limit your wanted/needed items to just a few. We all have many needs in times like these but this is not a
forum for your "Christmas Wish List"!

Wow that is bold. Around here I heard there are people who ask for and collect stuff and then they sell it. Many people write if they don't have a real need don't bother contacting me.
