The Birds are back!
We did not have ANY birds at all for about 3 months, since 2 days before the hurricane. NOw they are back in droves. Hopefully this is a sign of spring, and that the ground/dirt is finally getting washed free of all the chemicals.

Re: The Birds are back!
I seen a Robin in our back yard last week...I'm hoping that is a good sign.

Re: The Birds are back!
Ours never completely leave. But I'm looking forward to the indigo buntings coming back. We get them in our lane and they are so beautiful.
Re: The Birds are back!
Same here, thebigscott - our birds never leave. I make homemade birdfood which consists of suet, peanut butter, berries, seeds, nuts, etc. They love it! We have a variety of woodpeckers, jays, chickadees, nuthatchs. They all are a pleasure to watch.

They usually never leave here, but a few days before the hurricane they got the hell out of dodge.

Re: The Birds are back!
We have a few that tough out the winter but most go south. Nothing is a nice as seeing the first Robin, it means spring is coming and relief from the oil bill, lol.
Re: The Birds are back!
I actually saw a Robin here 2 weeks ago and was right excited! It turns out we had a few robins that didn't leave this year for whatever reason. I should have known better tho since we are still covered in snow!

Re: The Birds are back!
Heck last night I went up to Kroger's and they had a sign about doing Bird control and to be aware there might be loud noises. I don't wanna know what that means but I have noticed alot more in the area lately.
It's crazy how animals know when bad weather is headed their way.

Re: The Birds are back!
I don't know where you are censorship but they use dynomite here to scare them away when needed. It's the noise that makes them go.
Re: The Birds are back!
When we get big herds of Blackbirds I use firecrackers and a slingshot. Works for me, and cares the crap out of the neighbors dog.

Re: The Birds are back!
Well, I let the kids eat outside. Quinn is messy enough that there's always a cat, dog, bird, etc. who finishes up what he drops. But no, I don't feed them on purpose. I have enough cats that I don't think it's fair to purposefully lure the birds in close.
Re: The Birds are back!
These are the little Indigo Buntings we get in the summer, for those of you too far north or too urban to get them. They're only about 5 inches tall.
Re: The Birds are back!
Oh how pretty!!!! We had a Cardinal last summer, he stayed in yard for just about the whole thing, that is as pretty as we get. Thanks for sharing Karen.
I almost killed a hummingbird, damn thing flew right near my head and I thought it was giant bee so I swung the bag I had in my hand at it. I felt SO bad when I realized what it was, he was dazed but flew off and came back to flowers the next day so I guess it wasn't too awful. As mean as I am, I hate the thought of killing an animal. I cry when I hit squirrels and such. I killed a cat two years ago, I swear I cried for a week, all I could think about was some poor kid missing their kitty. It was in the middle of a highway with no houses around so I couldn't even tell whoever it belonged too

Re: The Birds are back!
We get a few indigo buntings here, but they're pretty rare. I love seeing them though!
Re: The Birds are back!
You get them but not me? That's not fair! I can't be that much North of you, if I even am at all?
Re: The Birds are back!
I'm probably more rural -- and my parents have 20 acres of ravine complete with a creek which helps attract the rarer species.
Re: The Birds are back!
Yep. They like it very rural. Scott always wants to trim back all the scrub in our lane every year and I fight with him like crazy over it. He's awful on doing household jobs or keeping the lawn mowed but he wants to work in the one place that I like scruffy because it attracts all the beautiful birds and bunnies. I keep telling him that if he has an urge to work, he should finish one of the multitude of projects he has going.

Makes sense. I'm just North of Houston.
Re: The Birds are back!
Your right erin. I havent seen near the wildlife. and we still havent gotten back all the birds we lost from the storm that never was.
Very weird.
LOL Karen about feeding the birds.
I dont feed them, and they STILL end up in my house. Of course most folks want birds that you can feed birdseed, not raw rotten flesh.
I used to do hummingbird feeders, but dont have a porch anymore.
OH wait. I feed birds. I have 18 chicks in the living room! thats a sure sign of spring. And have 10 more coming next friday
