Mama's Boys
Okay...
So I am a reality show junkie and will give a new one at least one viewing. Last night was the first show of Mama's Boys. Disturbing! There is something nautious about a mother rubbing her son's chest, plastering him with kisses and talking about his lips unless he is two years old and is home sick with a cold.

Re: Mama's Boys
Gross. I'm so glad I didn't tune in for that. I love my reality shows, but NOT the dating type ones (the Bachelor, the Bachelorette, Paradise Island, etc.)

Re: Mama's Boys
I agree. The dating ones are so gross. Ick, I can't imagine going for a guy I didn't know and making out with him along with a house full of other women. Isn't that what pimps do? LOL. Anyway, I was listening to a radio talk show one day and a guy came on and said his sister was an actress and she had been on one of the shows. He also said all the girls were actresses and that they are not really going for the guys at all. They are given scripts and new identities and are playing roles.
One of the women says she is from my city. She is a Poindexter. We know the Poindexters, in fact my SIL is best friends with K. Poindexter. I'm checking this s**t out ASAP.

Re: Mama's Boys
I hardly ever watch reality shows, but when I do it's never one of the dating ones. Yuck.
Re: Mama's Boys
This one was the grossest of all.
I think all of us at UB should get together and start a loud protest over the junk and debauchery on TV. These shows are not the reality of life at all. I can just see young girls gathered around the TV and watching this crap, picking up "dating tip" from what they see. I swear, if I was a mother of a child, I would so regulate what they watched. When I was growing up, it was bad enough watching Daffy Duck getting hit with an anvil six times per cartoon. Now Family Hour is running over with outright sexual explainations of what goes on in the bedroom. Have you checked out CBS on Monday nights? Geesh...

Re: Mama's Boys
I don't watch any reality tv, never did really. I also watch CBS Monday nights, my kids are in bed after a couple PBS shows but Two and Half Men is one of the funniest shows on TV, IMO. But I hate they do reruns at 7 pm.... I don't think it should be on at all before 9 pm.
Re: Mama's Boys
That's one of my problem, Tara. It doesn't matter how violent, sexually explicit, or inappropriate a show is. Once it's in reruns, it can be on at any time of the day. I only let my kids watch certain channels and shows.
We only have one TV, so it's hard on the older two who want to watch shows that would normally be OK for their age. I don't let them watch because the little two are around soaking it all in.

I totally disagree Pearly. I too am a reality show junkie... but I have control of the remote, not the networks. If a show isn't to my liking, I just don't watch it again.
I'll admit, we taped Mamma's Boys last night and I have yet to watch... but i don't want people dictating what I choose to watch or not... it's my and yours freedom to choose.
Sorry you found it offensive, and perhaps I will too, but then, I won't watch it again.
There have been many fine shows taken off the air because a certain group of people found it to be distastful (usually some religous sect or over zealous group of moms who can't seem to get a handle on monitoring their childrens tv viewing) and I really don't think that is what free speech is all about.,

Re: Mama's Boys
Ah Bizz, don't take me too seriously on the protest thingy. I know the times are different these days but I just reminisce about how Lucy had a baby and all we ever saw was Desi kiss her. Basically, what we did at our house was watch TV with the kids and comment on what we saw and encouraged them to do so too. Well, it was a lot more free-spirited than that but you get the picture. There was a lot of laughter from the adults at the stupid, gross stuff, etc. Heck, by the time we were through falling all over ourselves, the kids didn't want to watch the show anymore anyway.
You are right about the remote and I applaud you.

Re: Mama's Boys
Well, good point, bizzeedee. I know a lot of people think, oh, let's just say serial killers, are unfit to watch, but just you try to take my Dexter away from me. I can love him if I want to, and you can love your latest American Idol. I do feel angry when every single show has characters discussing sex either openly or through snarky comments. Seriously, I don't know anyone that acts like that. It's unrealistic and it makes me sad that there are so few shows I feel comfortable watching in mixed company. Or in the company of my children, parents, etc.

Re: Mama's Boys
Dee, I agree with you to a certain extent. BUT, I am probebly one of those religious zelots. I have an issue with ALL prime time TV.
I cant watch TV at all with my kids. I have to record all the shows I watch. I cant even sit and watch a football or baseball game with my kids. The commercials are as bad as the shows.
My kids cant watch the disney channel, and have you seen the cartoons on cartoon network? seriously?
I dont even like them to watch most game shows because of the way people act on there. i tried to let my kids watch the NFR. You have to fast forward through commercials.
Even the 'cartoons' on Sunday night on Fox are NOT for a kid. I watch CBS monday nights LOVE it.. Later in the week after I have recorded it. same with The shield, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, gary unmarried, ER, and a dozen others.
I will let my kids watch some reality shows, like Dirty Jobs, Little People Big world. But they are not on all the time. They might not be a 'reality show' that everyone loves because they are not about sensationalism, but they are something we enjoy. unfortunatly, the commercials ruin it.
When you have come to a point where you have to record EVERYTHING, including educational shows, because even the commercials are awful, there is something very wrong with this world.
I am all for free speech. But what about the children being children and not knowing about sex, abortions, that drugs are bad and drinking should be in moderation, that all women are not jumping in and out of bed with every person on their show. not to mention the differnces in views on many other things.
after watching these shows I dont wonder why our 4 and 5th grade and higher schools have to lock the bathrooms so kids cant have sex in them..

Re: Mama's Boys
Okay, I just watched Gary Unmarried. There were at least 4 refrences to pot, including someone accidentaly eating laced brownies.
But those wernt the bad ones. There was an entire scene about sex, including masturbation. and 2 scenes about getting hit in the 'nuggets' or some such.
As an adult I was not offended, and found it funny. As a mother, I didnt want my children to watch it.
And truthfully this show isnt near as bad as some.

Re: Mama's Boys
I was a bit miffed- according to tv guide there was suppose to be a new episode of The new adventures of old Christine and all I got was a stupid half hour about Blue Cross blue shield an DTV..... couldn't they leave that for the analog channels? Obviously if I am watching on the digital channel I don't need to know, lol. So anyway.... was is just a local thing, did anyone else get Christine?
Re: Mama's Boys
I applaud you mom's who do monitor what your children watch. But you monitor it, not some outside group.
I'll admit, the majority of night time TV shows are not fit for young children and even some teens! Heck, there's a whole bunch I wouldn't take money to watch.
Chelle, you go above and beyond what is expected to monitor what your kids see and don't see. A hellofa job for you, but your kids end up the winners.
I don't get a lot of channels (we're basic cable) so don't know about the cartoon networks... what about the PBS stations? and surely, there must be some other channels gear to children.
I'm fortunate, the only kids viewing I have to monitor is my husbands And since he usually sleeps thru most TV fare, it's easy!

Re: Mama's Boys
Dee, Noggin is a good channel for preschoolers because there are no ads. Most of the other channels geared for kids show a lot of violence, rudeness towards parents and teachers, and show an extravagent lifestyle as the norm. That's just the shows. The ads are sometimes worse. PBS is good for toddlers, but not older kids, and even at that the toddler shows are only in the morning. In the afternoon and evenings it's not kids programming.
My little ones watch Noggin and Nick Jr (although there are ads that I don't lilke on that). My older kids are teens and watch some programs for kids and a few for adults, but when they do I make sure that I know which shows they're watching and discuss with them how unlike reality it is.
My biggest problem with the networks is that you don't always know which shows are family-friendly. I'm OK with shows being violent or showing sex IF I know that's what's going to happen. What I resent and really think needs fixed is when a show is presented as being appropriate for kids when in reality it's not. It's like porn. If that's your thing, I've got no problem with you watching it. But if I turn on cartoon network on a Saturday morning and see porn, I have a big problem with that. Networks imply to us that certain times of day, certain days of the week, certain channels, and even certain shows are not going to be promoting sex and violence. It lulls parents into thinking that they don't have to monitor every moment that their kids are watching. But that's NOT true. Sex and violence are being snuck in all the time.
