Linux user? HELP?

OK, what is the difference between Linux and Windows XP? DH bought DD a Netbook for Christmas today, While I was gone, and it has Linux. I have not used Linux in ages, and for the life of me cannot remember anything.

Oh yeah, it's Ubuntu , if that makes a difference.

Hubby has linux on a couple of his extras, I haven't used it personally- but I like that it's free, lol. Good luck

Which desktop do they have you set up with? I've tried a bunch of 'em, but IMO I think the KDE one is the best/easiest to configure and work with. You can even make it look like Windoze if you want to.

Did your DH set you up with a user name and password, edbson? If not, get him to do that (assuming he's set himself up as Administration/SuperUser. Ask him to make your default desktop KDE. If that isn't already on his pooter, he can download it from one of many Linux support sites.

On the other hand if he's set you up to just use the shell terminal, that's a whole nuther ball o' wax. lol

What brand of laptop has Ubuntu already on it? And who is selling 'em?

I could use a new laptop, but have held off since I hate the idea of paying the MicroSloth tax on one (coming with Windoze pre-installed and you pay for it whether you want it or not) then scraping it off the hard drive just to put Linux onto it.

A lot of the netbooks come with linux, or if you pay more, XP. For example Asus EeePc, Acer Aspire One, HP mini -Note 2133. There are several others as well. I would do a search online for one. I like Newegg, it is easy to find stuff like that there.

It is an Acer Netbook, not really a laptop. We have not done anything to it, it is still in the box. Asus sells a laptop with it already in it also.

for the record, dh cannot send an email, turn on the laptop, or type without help....I sent him to buy her a netbook, he bought the first pink one he saw...
