How to not get spam from MyPoints Empty How to not get spam from MyPoints

Post by dragonbutch2 Thu May 22, 2008 11:26 am

Hi everybody,

OK so I've been lurking for a while here but am finally posting today since there's finally something worth posting about! <G> And I wrote in some other threads that I am thrilled about MyPoints because I've been using them for a long time and over the time I've used them have earned hundreds of dollars in gift cards - I find them very easy to use. (Though it sounds like the conversion rate isn't great, which is sucky)

HOWEVER, one thing people mentioned in another thread is that they get spam from MyPoints. I wanted to post about how to stop getting that spam. It is entirely optional and is based on what your accounts settings are.

Log into your account at http://www.mypoints.com

Go to https://www.mypoints.com/emp/u/unsubscribe.do

Uncheck every box... OR, do what I do, which is keep "SurveyMail" checked because they don't send surveys very often and when they do you can get 50 points for them if you qualify, or get 10 points just for trying (even if the survey is already closed!)

This should eliminate unwanted mail from them, such as the promotional e-mails they send out. I'm pretty sure that since I switched to having those boxes unchecked, I've only gotten survey offers and confirmations of my gift cards being sent to me.

Hope this helps!

Good to know, but I still think that we shouldn't have to deal with spammers. Do you have any recommendations for the spyware?

I am another person who hasn't had spyware issues with them, but I will make sure to recommend to friends without Macs to use Adaware or Spybot just in case.

DO NOT INSTALL THE TOOLBAR! That is the main way they get the spyware on your computer. Several years ago I had a Mypoints account and I found out the hard way about their spyware and adware and spamming. It got so bad I quit mypoints and had to format my hard drive. And just because your anti-spyware software is not saying you have spyware does nto mean you do not, it just is not finding it.

Although I will say that I recently rejoined Mypoints a few months ago and have not had any issues with it this time around. I do get 15-30 emails a day from their bonus mail, but that is because I opted to do so to get my 5 points for each mail read, so that is not really spam.

I have been with MyPoints for some time now and have cashed out for Amazon gift certs which bought a lot of presents for the holidays last year.

I do not have their toolbar, no way! I do get a lot of e-mails every day, but as said above you get 5 points for each one you read and do not have to do anything else.

With that being said, I am not happy with the situation either, but have to remind myself that I have received a lot of great things as part of campaigns. I wish they had put out a survey to all the members and asked us what we wanted and implemented the top 5 or 10 vote getters. But that is just my opinion!

I dont ever do toolbars .... with one exception.

I use firefox as my browser for everything except mypoints.

I have installed the toolbar much to my boyfriends dismay on IE. I use IE for mypoints and I do multiple searches using the toolbar for unique searches. I need to keep it for 30 days to get my 500 bonus miles which was an offer with my mypoints credit card.

I just wanted all the points and will promptly remove it once credited. It has not created havoc on my system but I do scan it almost daily. Most of my spyware and such come from all the survey sites.

Brandi,

I have thought about the MyPoints credit card, though I'm not sure I'd get much more through that than the awesome rewards system my WaMu card has - Does it have a good APR rate?

I think the rate depends on your credit score but the first 6 months are interest free.....and when I got mine I was awarded double points for everything I would purchase through them. I like the gift card rewards better then my amazon card that gives me amazon cards, and its better than alot of my other rewards cards too.

Hm - I have to think about it. I don't really want another credit card and in general I am tending towards eliminating possible ways for me to run up debt. But in terms of rewards their card looks like a good deal
