ROCCO ,EMERGENCY SURGERY Empty ROCCO ,EMERGENCY SURGERY

Post by agaphmou Thu May 05, 2011 1:59 pm

Our doggy Rocco had emergency surgery last night. The night before I gave him a couple of chicken dog treats and yesterday he threw up alot of blood. My brother and I ran him over to the vet.He thrw up blood there too.X-rays ,dr said to do exploratory, didn't see anything stuck in him in xray.He called me after surgery and just now again. He said the treats turned into a sand-like tiny pieces and ulcerated his stomach and small intestine. Now he's alert,he's giving him 3 types of antibiotics and two types of anti-ulcer meds.He will probably ,hopefully be home saturday or monday depending on if he can hold down food. Please say a little prayer for Rocco.

Oh, the poor little guy. I'd be contacting the manufacturer of the treats. I was shopping at Dollar General the other day, and was looking at dog treats. I'm all about finding dog treats that are Made in the USA. Every freaking thing is made in China these days. A new ploy I've seen is that on the front of treat packages it'll say Made by an American Owned Company!...but yep - Made in China! Anyhow, I was reading a treat package and it had this warning: Not for human consumption. Please wash hands thoroughly after handling. Now..WTH!! I'm going to feed my dog something that it's not even safe for me to touch?

Poor Rocko : ( Wishing him a speedy recovery! Lori- I agree 100% I so rarely buy my dogs treats because made in the USA is so hard to find. That and they get more than enough fall out from the kids that I'm pretty sure they don't need any more treats.

Athena,

Can you tell us the name of the treat? My guys get treats as training tools and I'd like to know what caused that issue to Rocco (love the name!).
I make my own, most of the time (it's really easy) but sometimes I buy commercially produced treats.

Thanks!

ROCCO ,EMERGENCY SURGERY Empty Rocco

Hey thank you all for the support! They are HARTZ CHICKEN STRIPS.They're deadly poor Rocco almost bleed to death! I just went by the vet and he looks good, lying down with a small cone around his neck taking his IV fluids. The poor thing was not permitted food and water for few days so that his ulcers could heal.He licked me(I call it kissing) through the cage.My brother is going to sue the company(Hartz).I've tried to post pictures here before but they never come out full,I don't know why.I posted a couple of pictures of him on facebook in the past though.I don't volunteer for a shelter but I do love animals, alot!!

My brother went to see him a couple of hours after me,and he took back the bag of treats. It's actually a brand called SMOKEHOUSE based in California, but the treats are made in China! Who would have thought! You're right Lori!

My brother already spoke to a lawyer friend of his.He advised him to go to small claims court because we probably won't get any more than 5k,which is fine with me because I already paid over 2k for the surgery, and I'm sure it will be close to 3k for all his IV meds and boarding

really, small claims court? well I guess that's better than a full fledged case... and then, you can't put a price on love, but you can certainly expect to be reimbursed for the pain and suffering of not only Rocco, but you too! hope you follow thru with the suing.

and really happy to hear he's responding and getting better, hoping the homecoming is tomorrow... because I'm sure Monday will seem like forever and a day before he does!

Lol Dee,Rocco is an italian name. When Nick(my brother) brought him home the first time he said" I want you to meet Ruckous" .I looked into Rocco's eyes and said, you have to give him a real name!So I thought of a few names which he didn't like,I can't remember them now,but when I said ROCCO ,he said hm! not bad! lol

I love you Rocco sounds like it could be a sweeter version of Ruckous... and hopefully he's lived up to the former.

I just went to the vet to see him again. This time the dr was there and he actually opened the cage to let Rocco out.Rocco jumped all over me,licking me all over. The dr had to tell me to hold him because his IV line will be pulled out.He was so energetic! As if nothing happened to him! So he was licking my face and then the dr said to him ,and me?? and Rocco of course doesn't lmao.I am so happy I'm pissing my pants ,sorry for the expression. He looks good as new! He's coming home Monday the dr said because after so many days without food, they forcefed him with an oral syringe, but he's fine!!!

Rocco is home!!! with a cone around his neck ,bumping into things with it lmao.He looks good,I have amoxicillin and sucralfate to give him for 10 days, antibiotic and anti-ulcer med. But he ate well, and he was pretty dirty,so it took me hours to get him clean with baby wipes because we can't give him a bath yet.I gave up after a while and my brother took over. Then Nick abandoned us and I Roccosat for hours lol.I didn't want to leave him alone so soon. Also when he wanted to lie down on the couch I lifted him up.So yeap,I was online only a little yesterday.
