Honey... sounds yummy! it really does... Plain food is what I like best, most times.. and when I discovered Red beans and rice?!
YUM!

Dee... How long has it been? Salad is one of my favorite foods.. and I wonder when I can have another..

Aren't you just sick to death of soup? Did I tell you that I tried your potato soup?
It was delicious! .... but it didn't agree with me. I have been having trouble finding food that
does. The problem is probably the antibiotic ? I find I cant manage a lot of my regular food
not even coffee or OJ . I have about 4 days worth left, maybe more.. My husband really liked the soup though...

I will try it again sometime soon.. post abx...

..

I've always been a salad a day person, and now I haven't had a salad since around Jan. 28 (day before extractions). These back molars just don't seem to have the chewing/grinding motion down, I guess. I have found, if the lettuce/greens are chopped up/sliced extremely small (I'm talking shredded), I can deal with it. but a piece of lettuce on a burger is out for me Crying or Very sad

And as for getting sick of soup, nope, really. As I was eating soup last night, I mentioned to dh how much I really enjoyed it and that I probably could eat it every night. And I find it very filling. I over indulged at bunco on Thurs night, so the scale was growling at me yesterday morning, but today? staying away from munching yesterday and having only soup and crackers for supper paid off. The scale smiled back at me today.

Sorry to hear the soup didn't agree with you... like you said, maybe another time.

Kath, stop in at teh health food store and as them to help you pick out some yeasts/pro-biotics/digestion aids. You're right, anti-biotics make your digestion off. But it's not just because the chemicals are rough on your tummy. They also kill the natural bacteria in your body that help digest your food. A decent health food store will sell pills that contain whomper big doses of the good bacteria. Big enough doses that they'll survive for a little while even when you're on antibiotics. When I had kidney stones I was on really strong antibiotics for weeks. I got really sick at my stomach, so I started taking a daily dose of the good bacteria and within a day I was all better.

Good advice Karen. I would add that you shouldn't take them near the time you take your antibiotics though. What you should ask for are probiotics. Also more commonly called acidophilus. You should look in the cooler for this product, and keep it in the fridge at home. It is best to get a broad range of strains included. My favorite brand is NOW 4x6 Acidopilus. My bottle has a price tag of $7.84 for a 60 cap bottle. Also be sure to eat yogurt with active cultures. It is a good idea to add acidophilus to the diet any time you have to fight any type of germs or just need to super charge your immune system. Alternative health pracitces are near and dear to me and I can really ramble on and on, so I will stop now.

I always take a pro-biotic when I take an anti -biotic..
have for years...Thank you though! that is very good advice. I actually get mine from my vet...
Where I used to work..

I was on a pretty high dose of abx though, and tried to match it.. but still..
by body is in rebellion.. all those chemicals! I had to take pain meds for over a week...
yech!

I have certificates of study in homeopathy, herbalism, and a variety of different healing modalities

But I do sometimes slip up when taking care of myself I have to admit, as and appreciate the help.
For instance, I had forgotten to take ginger for a few days, stupid! but true..

I have let my meditation habit slip too.. also bad .. but easily sorted.

Have I weirded you out totally yet?

Not at all Kath! I'm so impressed! I should have suspected somehow. You seem... holistic? ...in your attitude.

I'm not into it as much as I should be. I know it has a lot to offer. But I'm a junk food junkie and I'm not yet ready to give up my bad habits.

Honey-Too funny about the probiotics in the cooler! That's what I was going to say! I take a pro-biotic daily, and also have yogurt with active cultures daily, it really does help.

Kath-How do you take Ginger??? I know it's good for digestion, but how much and when should you take it. Also in what form??

My husbands family has a history of skin cancer, so the doctor has him on mega-doses of vitamin d (blood tests every 3 months). His numbers were VERY low, I'm wondering if it's a genetic thing. He's also on some other anti-oxidents and vitamins (in normal/low doses). It's hard keeping him on track since he's not sick, he has a hard time "getting" the preventitive benefits. LOL!

I've added DHA to the kids viatmins, as well as FOS/acidophilous. Any other recommendations?? Vitamins/Supplements confuse the living daylights out of me since there are soooooo many!!!

Post by Honey Sun Apr 13, 2008 12:59 pm

Here is what I think, take it or leave it, as it is just my opinion. I have heard in recent months, that a large portion of the population, may be deficient in vitamin D. I am thinking this could be behind much of the rise in cancer rates. For decades we have likely been deficient in it and not known it, because we were warned not to take more than 400iu per day. At the same time, we have been told to slather up in sunscreen, so we also can't get it from sun exposure. Now they say that our rda of vitamin D is much higher than 400iu, but they don't know how high it should be yet. I read that if our body has enough vitamin D, it acts as a watcher , so to speak, over cells starting to become cancerous. It would then take care of those cells, thus heading off cancer before it ever takes hold. So if we have all gotten too little vitamin D, is it any wonder that cancer rates have gone through the roof? Glad to hear your hubby's doc has him taking D. I have also heard that tomatoes are important in the diet to guard against skin cancer.
So I have added flax oil/cod liver oil to our supplements to up the D, plus I think flax is great take in general. We also take glugosamin/chondroitin for joint health, and iron free mega-mutivitamins(made from green source foods and herbs) Men, and women who don't have periods any more, should not take vitamins containing iron. We don't take calcium supplements, but for anyone who does, be sure to take it with magnesium. I think the ratio is 1:2, but I would have to look that up to be sure.

capsules, tea.. or there is a sort of candy made from pure ginger and sugar...
I generally use capsules..
It is good for arthritis and a catalyst for other herbs...
That and red clover are always on my shelf....

I think there are two factors affecting the rise in many diseases. Genetics and lack of proper nutrition. Genetics gives a pre-disposition, so you already have a higher than normal chance of things like cancer. This would account for the "normal" part of the population that got cancer, etc. Then there is how bad our diet has become. It's crazy, because there are safe levels of sun exposure. The sun is the best source for Vitamin D. The trick is to get 15-20 minutes of exposure without getting burned. The other problem is that damage is done long before a problem is evident. My husband is on 6000 iu of Vitamin D3. I would not recommend that much to anyone without doctor's supervision, though he did say that 1-3000 iu is perfectly safe. Part of the problem is convincing the general population that what they've been told for years is inaccurate.

Kath-Thanks for the information on ginger!!! I really appreciate it!

ITA about the lack of nutrition today, despite the fact that most think it is better, and small amounts of daily sun is a great idea.

Dinner here tonight will be teriyaki salmon, brown rice and veggie mix.

I agree with the Genetic theory..basically yes our bodies are exposed to more dangerous/hazardous enviromental and natural dangers...but if you compare it to the people of the past....our risks are virtually the same...the people of the 1700's died early in their lives due to common viruses, where as we are immune due to immunizations..
Genetics I believe plays the primary role...now if you smoke or drink/drugs heavily than yes its going to cut your life span..but I think 20/20 did a story 10 years or so ago that made perfect sense.."Are we scaring ourselves death?" John Stossel was the reporter and he mentioned that the only proven way to alter your life expectancy is by drinking which I think shortened a life span by 3-4 years...Smoking was 7!

By the way we are having Spagetti..salad and fresh bread!

Have been taking an extra A/D for years... you need the D to work with the calcium (that I hope everyone is taking because we don't necssarily get enough from out food if we don't eat right - and I'm the first to say I don't). And yes, we take it with magnesium AND Zinc.

I've used flax seed daily for at least 10 years... grind it fresh every day. I put it on my cereal or in my fruit smoothie, and also take with a drink at night.... and as for Cod Liver Oil, we use Fish Oil - same thing. Lots of it.

You are so right on about every point you mentioned. You should post this in alternative healing, but I fear a lot of folks might not be reading that thread, because it's not the norm Smile
