Some good news for a change Empty Some good news for a change

Post by BuzzNut Wed Mar 04, 2009 2:17 pm

I haven't worked for about 13 months. I have sent out many resumes & called many places. I was even promised a job, and then it didn't work out. The news reports that there are plenty of jobs in health care and government. I'm here to tell you, it must just be government health care jobs, because I think I have applied at every health care related place around me within 50 miles, and there is not jobs available.

So, I applied at Walmart. I went for my interview today, and was hired. I have to wait on my drug test to come back before starting. I was hired for the lawn & garden area, and think I will really enjoy that part. I worked in retail as a department manager for 10 years, so I do know a little bit. Funny thing is, the guy that done my interview and who will be my dept manager, I worked with him at my other retail job.

That's great news, BuzzNut! Things are rough out there for sure. I saw on the news the other day that a Dairy Queen opened up to interview for 35 available seasonal jobs (nearly all Dairy Queens are seasonal in Michigan) and hundreds of people showed up just during the first hour. The manager felt so bad; she said she wished she could hire more, but she just can't. Instead of seeing a slew of teens, there were men and women who are just desperate to find a job so they can keep their home.

Bleah! I just turned your good news thread into bad news. I didn't mean to do that! I'm trying to stay positive, too, but there's slim pickins right now on good news. That's why the successful landing of that airplane in the Hudson was such a big story. We're all desperate for good news!

Thank you, and yes, I can relate to the many people applying for one job.
Last summer, I applied for a job at a local place for a secretarial type job. When I interviewed the guy told me that when he last needed someone he had two applicants. The time I applied he said he had 40 to apply, and he only brought in 4 to interview. It really is very hard to find a job.

The assistant manager that sat in on the interview today I know really well. We worked on the emergency squad together many moons ago. This job that I got today is considered temporary. I asked her about it, and she told me not to worry there was always another job within the store that I could apply for. She said that she doesn't know of any time they have let anyone go that was on temp hire.

My DH is a CSM there so yes, I had a little bit of pull. But, you would not believe how many people they hire at this Walmart that WILL NOT work. They are hired and work a few days and quit. I don't get it. I need a job, at this point I don't care what it is, and I'll do what I can to keep it.

LOL...I was already getting that with DH working there, I asked him if that meant we could get 20% (just kidding) lol He looked at me like I had two heads and said NO, you can't get 20% discount...bummer I tried. Very Happy

Oh, and the good part is employees do get a bonus a few times a year. They are due one next pay day. It is based on your time with the company. Some of them has been for $300 or more. It will be a while before I can get that though.

WOW, you are lucky. The walmart here will not hire spouses or realtives of any kind, and there are no jobs anyway.

Congrats on getting something -- I know times are tough here too. I actually work in a health care/social work type field and there's even layoff talk and a hiring freeze in our agency. I think the garden center would be fun to work in!

If I work at Wal-mart, I want to work in the bakery. Our wal-mart makes very pretty cakes and I want to learn how to do all the decorating.

I would love to work in the garden center. I would water the poor little plants so they don't all die like they usually do.

I need to check out the bakery to see what type of work they do. I dont usually look in the bakery area. I would love to discover a cake wreck.

A good friend of mine is a nuclear medicine tech, and she was telling me yesterday that even new grads in her field can not find work. My neighbor that I worked with at the hospital got fired right after I left, and he can't find anything either, and he has been an xray tech for over 30 years. There is just no jobs anywhere, and it is very sad. My DH keeps saying I can not believe you can not find a job with your experience. I have tried telling him, just because I have experience and need a job, doesn't mean they have an opening.

Thank you everyone!!

Post by BuzzNut Fri Mar 27, 2009 8:23 pm

I have a bit more good news. Our store has been getting ready for inventory, that was yesterday. I have been straightening all over the store, but Tuesday the manager asked me if I would stay over to finish HBA. I did stay an hour, The biggest Loser was on that night and I didn't want to miss it, but I did get what I was working on done before I left. The next day I came in and the manager again grabbed me and asked me if I would go to automotive and straighten. I worked there my whole shift and got the whole department done. The store really was a mess due to lack of neglect, but there also isn't many employees that seem to work the floor for some reason. I guess the district manager had been there earlier in the day and had a fit.
Yesterday during inventory the assistant manager that is over my department pulled me aside and said that the manager hardly ever compliments anyone, but she told me that she was praising me for a job well done (yeah me, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to straighten a shelf or a department but I won't tell her that). She then told me not to worry (about being temp help) that she was sure a position would come available.
Today, I was on break and got a page to call the managers office. I called, and my assisitant manager says "we need to talk to you in the office". (my first thought was what did I do?) I get back there, my assistant manager immediately asked me if I would like to get out of Lawn & Garden, they then asked me if I would be interested in accepting a regular job in the photo lab. The first 3 months is the same pay as I am now, but after that it does increase.
Dh is happy for me, but he's fit to be tied too...lol He told someone today that "I've been here for two years, and she has worked two weeks and has them all falling all over of her"...lol

Yahoo! I'm so excited for you. I hope the pay bumps come frequently, too. Seriously, I know that a lot of stores have a hard time finding good employees as opposed to lazy ones (like I would be, LOL). Maybe you'll get a nice promotions soon.
