Anyone know some good resources for me?
From Feb of this year, until the kids got done school for the summer in mid June, I had to fight with the school to excuse Wynonna's absences due to her illness. This is how it's set up. Our school does not require students to take finals at the end of the year, unless they have more than 3 absences. (Seniors not included) Now what is at issue is that Wynonna's absences were considered excused for purposes of attendance only, not for the purposes of taking finals, even though we had documentation of her hospital stay in Feb, DR notes, etc. So it wasn't accepted even though she has a documented illness. She has remicade treatments coming up the end of the month and a couple more times in the next 6 mos, along with a specialists appt in Sept and these cannot be made after school hours or on the weekend because the specialty clinic is not open on weekends and you take what appt they give you. The specialist only comes up here once every 3 months. They give us a time, we cannot pick what time we want the appt. So these are things beyond our control. Does anyone else's highschool have the same type policy and/or any of you parents have to fight with the schools due to your child's illness and what has worked for you?

Re: Anyone know some good resources for me?
What is it they are saying?? That she has to take finals?? I can kinda see their point that they want to make sure that she knows the required materials to continue on. It could hurt her later on if she misses stuff. Has she made up her school work?? If so and her grades are fairly good, just passing the finals "C's" could take care of things.
Definitely take care of the Dr. stuff and deal with the school stuff as it comes along. If the finals are only 1 test per class...it shouldn't be too awful.

She took finals at the end of the school year this past year, though if it wasn't for her illness she wouldn't had to have taken them. She had already made up all the work from the time she missed when she was out due to Dr appts, hospitalization, etc. I just don't think she should be punished for being sick. The only days she missed were days that she was hospitalized, the Dr told her to come in. lab work. Appts, lab work that didn't take the whole day she would attend school as long as possible for the day until she had to do these things and if there were any part of the school day left, she went back. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is to her, especially when all her friends were not taking finals and she was stuck in a 100 degree classroom taking finals because she had been sick and missed some days.

Re: Anyone know some good resources for me?
It does seem unfair and that sucks. I'm not sure who to talk to?? Maybe make an appt with the principal and go see if there is any way to have it "waived". Maybe if you can make a good argument to him/her ie she made up all work, keeping up her grades?? Especially since they would know it was coming.
Also how are they defining "absence" the whole day, part of a day etc...if her appts only have her out for part of the day maybe they wont count against her.
Also is she going to be a Jr. or Sr. ??

Go here, I know she doesn't have an LD, BUT she needs a medical IEP, she qualifies for it.

I am 99% sure they cannot fail her for medical reasons, as long as she is at or above grade level

Re: Anyone know some good resources for me?
you can challenge it by going to the school board if necessary. I had to do that with a grandchild. there is a law also that if a child is as ill as she was, there should have been a tutor supplied from the school for her- a teacher that comes to the home. And if you need to go to the child study team at the school- she shouldn't be penalized for illness. I retired from an educational position and know there are many things you can do. Usually there is also an advocacy group in each state that may help you- you can probably find that online. One group is called Co-Ad and boy, the schools hate to see them coming. They make things happen for the parents.
