I'm headed to civilization! Diana: A Celebration Empty I'm headed to civilization! Diana: A Celebration

Post by Lori Mon Jan 31, 2011 9:49 pm

I'm making a quickie trip down to Grand Rapids on Wednesday. My sister and I got tickets for the Diana: A Celebration exhibit at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. I am so freakin' excited! I can't believe we'll be within touching distance of her gowns etc.

We'll have dinner with my son after he gets off work and then stay at his place overnight. I have to get my sister home by 12:30 the next day, so I don't think we'll be doing any shopping, but we're both broke anyhow.

I'm not excited at all now. It pays to listen to the news. I was told not to travel on Wednesday unless necessary. Big old storm with 14 inches of snow expected. It's actually a blizzard warning. Now we have to decide what we want to do.

If you go, enjoy! I am missing a funeral due to our weather. I just don't want to travel 200 miles when there might be ice on the roads....and i have no clue how to drive in ice/snow...

We are calling it off. I ain't driving 300 miles when they're telling people to stay off the roads. I'll call the museum when they open and see if they plan on even opening tomorrow. If they stay closed, at least there might be a chance of rescheduling or getting a refund. It's not worth my life.

I don't blame you. That storm is heade towards us too and they're already talking about shutting the schools down tomorrow. Guess we'll see how this one pans out.

Let Us Know -

Lori - if you are able to make the Diana Celebration and civilization another time.

Rebecca - if you make it through the storm.

All others - don't drive if you do not have to. Think of it this way - should I risk my life - or not . . .

Happy to report our power has been restored Very Happy Very Happy

I called the GRAM and they told me to call the ticket company and gave me their number. She said they would be able to change the date for us. We're going on the last day of the exhibit, Feb 16th. It's weird, they have timed admission. They only let so many people in at 10, then the next group at 11, then 12. You can stay as long as you like, but once you leave you need a new ticket to get back in. So we kept our same time of 1 pm. That should give us time to travel there, leaving in plenty of time in case of traffic, weather *crossing my fingers*, finding the place, and parking. So I'm excited again!

All of the colleges are closed, and I'm wondering if the museum is just going to close, too. They're telling everyone to stay at home, but if you go out "make sure you have a survival kit with you, because you may not reach your destination."

It's let up here a lot now, but last night was pretty nasty. I think it was about 9 PM when they decided for sure to close the schools today. I've had bronchitis so in a way it was nice that I didn't have to rush the kids out of the house this AM and we all sat around in our pjs drinking tea. Mike did go to hockey last night, but he was with two other guys in a 4X4 so I wasn't too worried about him. He did say there were drifts right over all of the roads though.

Ice storms are worse IMO. Everything is slippery -- even things that don't look icy as you're driving along. I usually find there's more damage from ice storms than there are from snow storms. Trees and branches snap, you fall just trying to step outside, and the power is more likely to go out. Good luck if you get it!

that sucks Althena. Schools in most areas close for less. And what's with the mayor making the decision; here and other places, it's the school superintendent that's calls it!

Almost all the schools around us closed last night... not ours, they closed this morning AFTER it was pretty clear the storm here was a dud. We got maybe 6 inches, it was well over by the time I got up. 20 minutes north of us got slammed pretty good though.
