Some people are just insane

This happened at a Charleston hospital yesterday. Another news channel was saying her husband was on a ventilator in ICU when she done this. They had been in an argument and nursing staff asked her to leave, she left and came back. For those on dial up and can't pull up the link, she came back to the hospital with a pistol and shot him in the temple. He died 30 minutes later. She handed the gun to a doctor on her way out of the room. They had been estranged for 3 years. I have been a patient in this hospital, and have visited others many times. It is a huge hospital, with security every where, but they do not have metal detectors. I can't believe she was able to do this in ICU. I bet there will be some changes made now.

I never can get used to the idea that someone would do that. If he was so awful that she felt that shooting him was a good thing, why did she stay married to him and not take the opportunity of his illness to escape?

It was bad enough that she shot and killed him, but I shutter at what else could have happened.
And I agree Karen, they had been seperated for three years. I don't know what the circumstances were, it hasn't been told, but I'd have been divorced and moved on in that 3 years. Some just like to hang on though.
That hospital is mostly for heart patients. It is one of a group of three hospitals in the city, and each hospital is a division for certain medical illnesses. They have one for women & children, one for traumas and this one for heart. It never said why he was on a vent though...maybe by-pass?? I don't know. There are also two other hospitals in Charleston, but this group is the larges of them.

That's crazy!

I just heard there was another shooting in a WV hospital Friday evening. This one was in Martinsburg in the eastern panhandle. It happened in the emergency room. I haven't heard the details.

Wow. I hope this doesn't become a trend!

Here's the lowdown on the latest shooting:

An Eastern Regional Jail corrections officer shot and wounded an inmate who tried to escape from the Martinsburg City Hospital's emergency department Friday evening, where the man was being treated for self-inflicted lacerations, police said.
Donald Berkley Surber Jr., 37 who is accused of murdering Katherine Nicole Sharp during a 26-hour hostage standoff at her home earlier in the week, was in critical condition after being shot at about 8:30 p.m., said Martinsburg Police Chief Ted Anderson.

Surber was taken from the Eastern Regional Jail to the hospital's emergency room for "self-inflicted lacerations to his wrist." Surber was shot by an ERJ correctional officer when he attempted to escape. The bullet entered through his upper arm and into his chest area. Surber was transferred to a Winchester, Virginia hospital for treatment.

The Martinsburg City Police, Berkeley County Sheriff's Department and West Virginia State Police were on the scene at the hospital Friday night.

Sounds like it was the right thing to do then. I hope the corrections officer is OK. That sort of thing can be pretty traumatic.

The lady that shot her husband in the hospital ICU, has been sentenced to life in prison.

of course my husband worked in a prison for 10 years. Sympothy is not my strng suit when it comes to inmates....
