AdAware Empty AdAware

Post by Rebecca1340 Thu May 22, 2008 8:54 am

This is something that I would normally post in Unbzzed, but since we're all being forced to sign up for a site riddled with spyware and spam I thought I'd post it where everyone can access it.
Most of you probably already have Adaware, but for those that don't it should help keep the spyware from MyPoints and other sites to a minimum so that they don't slow down your computer too much.
There a free download here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Thanks rebecca!!

I wonder how much slower having to put that on my computer will make me run. I have a decent computer, but am so slow on dial up that when you have to put things between you and the website I just crawl through. and sadly, when you crawl thorugh you end up timing out, freezing up and haveing lots of problems.

You don't have to run it while you're online. It's something that your run after you log off to clean up your PC. It takes a while to run it, but you'd be amazed by all the crap MyPoints has already put on my PC and I'm not even able to sign into the site!

Is spybot a free download? If so, would you mind posting the link? I think we're all going to need all the help we can get.

Ditto to having a Mac - I've never encountered any problems (and certainly no popups) with MyPoints on my Windows computer, either... But I'm sure having a Mac is part of why I don't even worry about things like this.

My brother gave me this link when I was having problems and it helped me oh-so much! I run it at least once a week to make sure I get rid of any bugs.

Spy Bot

I ran it yesterday afternoon and cleared some things up. I am running it again now (everyone has me scared) and yet to find anything though.

Using any program the removes files from any system....good or bad can create its own issues. Please make sure you read what things are and how they relate.

The link below cleans your registry after all the other programs create more......I use this but with all internet programs it is at your own risk.

Its amazing if you do a search with it what it finds.

I rarely use AdAware because I prefer SpyBot. I would highly recommend SpyWareBlaster as it keeps the stuff from getting on your computer in the FIRST place. I rarely ever have anything show up in SpyBot or AdAware because of SpyWare Blaster. It's free of course and it used to be included in the old SpyBot, now it's a separate DL and you have to make sure you update it regularly.

FYI I clicked the link for MyPoints (ugh) before I checked over here. After reading all of this I ran SpyBot & AdAware but didn't find anything I needed to get rid of.

To clean up your computer super-quick, I recommend (free)
CCleaner

CCleaner also has a registry cleaner that has never done any harm to my computers. BUT make sure you uncheck the box that installs the Yahoo Toolbar when you're installing it.

AVG Free IS terrific. But why would you send them to FileHippo to download it?

I love CCleaner! My brother gave me this laptop and I trust everything he has to say about computers. I run CCleaner at least once a week, unless I did a lot of editing with photoshop and have a lot in my recycle bin.

If you're really really paranoid about your computer you can also run Xblock free online scanner. Ever since my cable company came by and found another person logging onto my wireless internet I try to be more aware of what's on my computer.

Xblock

That one has found things from time to time that others don't. Once it found a key logger on my computer eeek. This time it found Power Strip

"PowerStrip is an IE toolbar with a search field and link buttons. When you use a targeted merchant site, PowerStrip silently sets the afffiliate ID, so as to steal commission fees from your web shopping."

I rarely use IE - I prefer FireFox instead. Wonder where I got that?

Another link for AVG.

Found it with some of the other links I have for this kinda thing. I have this one too, and like how they detect something right away.

I have an amazing Norton Virus and Spyware/Adware Security Suite. They get rid of it before it is allowed to penetrate my computer. That is one of the bonuses of being a Rogers High-Speed Internet user and paying through the nose for having it. LOL!

You can also look at download.com for AVG.
I have Road runner, and RR and Norton do not play well together.

I have avg virus scanner for email.

(have always hated norton and mcafee )

plus I use CC cleaner at least twice a day. should I also get a spyware program?

If so I reckon AVG's would be best since I have their antivirus right?

so do I need to do it?

Edited to add

I did turn back on my firewall. cant remember why I turned it off but it was making things slower for me I am sure.
