Company that just won't leave
Don't you just hate when you have company you weren't expecting and they just won't leave? I ran out to Walmart tonight to pick up a few things, when I got home there were people here -- not just any people, people that are friends of dh's that I just sort of tolerate. They just had a baby so they had to bring her over to show us. So that was fine, but by 9:00 the baby had had enough and was getting cranky, the wife had had enough because she was tired, but the guy was still just sitting there yammering on! I ended up having to put the dog in the bathroom because he had never seen a baby before, let alone a cranky one, and started wanting to play with her, my kids ended up being up until 10 because their room is next to the livingroom where everyone was sitting and the bathroom where the dog was barking so there was no point in sending them to bed. Ugh! I'm wiped and I only accomplished half of what I was going to do tonight!
Re: Company that just won't leave
oh no!! that sucks!
poor baby. and poor you. and poor dog!
If it makes you feel better, my kids are still awake. even though I sent them to bed at 8:10. They keep coming out and asking me asnine questions.

So mine is not the only one who asks asinine questions after bedtime?
We have unexpected visitors from time to time that I cannot stand( bil&sil), I usually get into my jammies and start flipping channels, obviously bored. They do leave.but they come back eventually....and they bring their heathens I mean...um....kids

Re: Company that just won't leave
Rebecca... in that situation.. I would have pointed out to the guy that his baby and wife were tired, and so was I, and needed to go home. I would invote them back for another more convenient time... and stood to herd them to the door. I have done that in the past. All with a smile and in a friendly way. May have left someone miffed, but never to the point where they didn't come back.

Re: Company that just won't leave
It's a nice thought kath, but I tried that and he just doesn't get it. This guy's seriously lacking social skills or something! He just figures that we would have been so excited to see the baby that we wouldn't care if she was cranky. I told him I've seen lots of cranky babies before, but he just said, "Well you won't get to see her again for a while," and didn't budge. The wife kept saying she was tired, but he doesn't get that she would still be tired from having the baby -- it had been 6 days after all Even my dh was saying that he remembered how tiring it was for me when our kids were new and even that he had a bad day at work and needed to unwind. This guy just wanted to hang out with friends and wasn't budging!

The poor woman. What must it be like to live with him all the time. His being dense disrupted so many people's routines that night!

Re: Company that just won't leave
Oh man.. I CAN sympathize and hate it. Not only for myself and my tired kids but for the wife that has to tolerate it as well.
Re: Company that just won't leave
I feel for you, the Mom and the baby!
We had company over last month that didn't seem to take the hint! My son was crabby because he was tired, I was tired and these people just would not leave. And they had a 2 hour drive back home, so around 8 pm, I started to hint by putting my son's PJ's on... nothing. 8:30 pm, put him in his bed, (which did not last because of the company being over), nothing. Finally at around 10:30pm, they decided it was time to leave!! I was ready to scream! Needless to say, they have not been invited back yet... and maybe not for some time.
I mean, the next day was Easter and my family and I had to wake up early!

Re: Company that just won't leave
These people weren't even invited in the first place -- they just showed up! They're definately not getting any invitations any time soon. Honestly, I don't mind when people just drop in. You may find my house a mess and the kids and I in our PJ's, but I don't mind people dropping in to say hi and have a coffee. It's when they don't have the sense to leave that I get frustrated!missmissylette wrote:I Needless to say, they have not been invited back yet... and maybe not for some time.

Re: Company that just won't leave
I have had this problem too.
I solved it by doing the following:
Stand up and say. "I'll be right back".
Go to your bedroom and put your PJ's on.
Come back and say "I am sorry for keeping you guys up so late".
I am going to bed now so you guys can leave.
THen start turning things off, ie: the TV and lights.
Go to the front door and open it for them.
Don't forget to say good night and thanks for coming.

Re: Company that just won't leave
LOL Valerie! That's kind of like my approach. I just say, "OK, I hate to be this way, but I'm kicking you out now." I say it with a smile, stand up and walk them to the door. Only one person didn't think I was serious. Him I said, "I mean it. Leave. Now." He was stunned. Of course it was past midnight so maybe sleep deprivation made him stupid. I always invite them to come some other time and finish the conversation, but I do kick them out.

Re: Company that just won't leave
ahhhhh
and I was thinking about the Pj's post. I wear mine all the time if I aint leavin the house. so thats no good for me! LOL But I do get up and clean.
Or start walking around aimlessly. cause I have real bad nerve damage in my feet from when I had surgery in highschool and when I get tired my feet get all tingily and it hurts real bad. So I will just start walking around or bouncing on them or something. BR will ask what the hell I am doing and I say "oh you know how my feet get when I get tired. they start to hurt so bad that I cant sit still. I hope they donthave me up all night. Then he will tell me to go on to bed, maybe laying down will help.
I will say something like "oh I hate to with so and so here" and they get the hint. sometimes..

Re: Company that just won't leave
There is always the option of stopping them at the door with
"Oh, what bad timing! We were just on our way out!"
Or just go to bed.

Re: Company that just won't leave
I hate company that just doesn't leave! We have friends that are like that. This one time they came to visit when my 4 year old was just a little baby. They stayed FOREVER! I even did the I'm tired, the baby is tired. Nothing. My daughter was getting cranky and crying, and I even did the we'll go to bed when they leave and they still didn't leave. My husband and I finally ended up walking to the kitchen and opening the front door for them. They stood there talking to us for another 15 minutes before I finally had enough and just went to bed with my daughter (I hate going to bed when company is still there). When my husband came to bed, he said it was another 30 minutes before they left! If I know they are coming over anymore, I usually make sure I'm already in bed. LOL.

Re: Company that just won't leave
If we see someone coming to the door that we don't want to talk to... friend, family, whatever...we just don't answer the door. We know that they can hear the TV or whatever, but we still don't answer. If we see them later and they ask why we didn't answer when they came by, we tell them, "Oh that was you. Sorry, we were 'busy'...wink, wink" That usually embarrasses them enough that they drop it. LMAO

Good one Trish!
I am impressed! My friend Joe used to be that way before he finally got married.
I would either litereally push him out the door or just go to bed and leave him to his own devices. We met as kids, and were good friends..brother sister.. I loved him. Still do, but his wife doesn't like him to associate with people he knew before her.....
