Kath, if they are adamant that they won't punish, what about reward? Can you encourage them to institute a program where kids can earn some small special reward for improved behavior. I'm not meaning, kid A gets a reward because he's been nicer than kid B. More like kid A resisted the urge to hit someone today, and since that was better than yesterday he gets to sit in the special blue chair that has a picture of a cat on it. And it seems like I remember that taking care of some small living thing is helpful for learning how to be gentle. I'm thinking a small plant wouldn't be much trouble, and it wouldn't be at risk from violence in the same way a pet would be.
Re: Blogs
you don't dare to put a plant in the same room with aobut 70% of our poulation
they would throw it at someone
rewards?
milky ways
pop tarts
sometimes wagon rides.. ( ridiculous.. kids weighing twice what they should being pulled in a little kids wagon..huge kids)
walks would be better..
gentle?
that is hard to teach after a while..
we cheat oin preschool and hug
and cuddle
we have a little one who had horrible meltdowns.. he has autism
he would scream and scratch and bite and looke like the devil himself.
he did it over and over and over during the day
now? hardly ever maybe once a day if that does he melt down.. and going totally over the edge?
almost never..
'cause we showed him love..
now he comes over and climbs on our laps and loves on us..
progress!!!!
it has gone home with him too, mom says

Re: Blogs
I'm nearly caught up on my reading of your blogs... all except Chelle's. Sorry Chelle. I like it a lot, but there's a lot of it to catch up on! LOL. Anyhow, just wanted to say I'm enjoying them ever so much. And I've gone ahead and started one of my own. Just cause it looks like fun.
Re: Blogs
I need to do some catching up on blogs... I had all those days off last weekend and mostly read!
and I still owe a review on one book ... have to do that before the next ones arrive..
lazy me
I spent too much time hanging out with my new bzzbuddies! lol

teaching of things that are socially acceptable behavior..
they let them act like wild animals...
They say that the kids don't understand
have no body awareness.. blah blah blah
so wrong.t.
If the child puts a staff member or another student the child who attacks.. the parents are never told.
Not even when they hurt someone badly enough to put them on disability for life
because ..
the parents hear enough bad news
its a bunch of crap
but I love most of the kids
and most of the staff
its the administration that sucks and has no brain collective or otherwise..
I hear your passion... I feel it too.. believe me.. I raised my own four kids to be respectful and empathetic
as you clearly have...
When i get going and start ranting... the other aide says i am having a moment...and to let it go
so i try to shut up and love my class of kids and hope I don't get hurt too badly to keep working..
Bus time is the worst for me.. big kids.. up to age 21 .. many over 12 or so are taller than me.. I am about 5'2
some are over 6' lol
but we try to watch each others back..
what else can we do?
I wish I knew..

Sorry you have to deal with that kath. My stepmother had to leave a similar job because she couldn't take being attacked over and over. It was very sad.

Re: Blogs
LOL thats okay karen. I understand
Heck, my memory is so bad ( one of the reasons for the blog) that I will get lost readin some of th older posts sometimes and think "OMG, my kids are awful! LOL" but most times they just make me laugh. Its easier to laugh at them once you are removed. Its when they do it that you are ready to kill them.
I am trying to read everyones. BUT I get so bogged down.

Re: Blogs
I'm not surprised... your blog is hilarious. You certainly have a sense of humor, and you write very well. Makes ordinary things come across as funny. I envy you.... I am the opposite, the funny things I write come across as ordinary, lol.
Congrats!
Congrats!
Re: Blogs
Chelle, that's wonderful! I've been trying to get caught up on yours this week. I'm too whipped to be actually productive, but I do have enough energy to read. I'm really enjoying getting to know your family. My kids were never the big outdoors types. The like camping some, but mostly because they get to have a fire and stay up late. And they like caving, too. But they were never the go outside and catch something kinds. Reading your blog is like seeing what my life would have been like if they were.

Tara, that's not true... it's just a different kind of funny. Chelle's is over the top slapstick three stooges lucille ball kind of funny. Yours is winnie the pooh funny. (If you've read the books and not just watched to shows you'll know what I mean. The funniest stuff, but said with a straight face and a gentle tone.) And Kath is inspiring me to make time to read, and Rebecca started this whole website, all on her own. I love learning and trying new things, and daily one of you says something that gives me a new idea, or a new take on an old idea. I'm thoroughly impressed with all of us!
Re: Blogs
Tara, Thank you In my family I am actually not the funny one. BR is, and Matt. if I could just quote the conversations you have with Matt. He is out there. lol
ANd I do like your blog, you are very funny, and not boring, you really do make me laugh
Karen, thank you too and unfortunalty around here it usually looks like a Lucille Ball or three stooges script. Between the kids antics and my bad luck we pretty much have it going LOL
