I just wish I could do this EVERY DAY!
I bought a brisket for 89 cents a pound. It was 10.04
Not a great brisket, but not an awful one.
So I made it, only using a little Tony's cacheries. say that raised the price to 10.50
Then tater salad from taters I raised. with the miricle whip, relish, mustard, eggs, pimentos and such say that was 2.00 worth of ingrediants (I dont think it was but...)
so 12.50
then 2 cans of baked beans. 1.26 each. just round it do 15.50
So Saturdays meal was 15.50 for 6 people!!
THEN, I took the brisket, added some BBQ sauce and CHicken Broth. 1.50 and .85 so round that to 2.50. and 1.50 for the buns.
Thats 19.50 for 6 people for 2 meals. Add the tea and its 20.00 so 10.00 a day for 6 people. Thats less than 2.00 per person per meal.
OH and there is still enough left for lunch for BR and the kids today. so 3 meals for 20.00 and not crappy meals either.
I just wish I could do it for every meal.

Re: I just wish I could do this EVERY DAY!
The reason I am so amazed at this is because we eat LARGE meals. I fry 2 chickens just to have a few peices left over for breakfast or lunch for BR to take. a roll of 5lbs of hamburger meat makes one meal of hamburgers and a few extra for lunch for him.
Re: I just wish I could do this EVERY DAY!
oh and the tea was only one night. I forgot about the .48 cents for the two 2 liters of Root Beer that I bought.

I was just saying to Scott that I don't think I've ever eaten a brisket. You and Erin make me want to try it.
Re: I just wish I could do this EVERY DAY!
Not too shabby! I love when I can pull off a half decent meal so cheaply!
Re: I just wish I could do this EVERY DAY!
Go Chelle!
I'm not familiar with brisket either, Karen.

Re: I just wish I could do this EVERY DAY!
Thank y'all!
Tonight is chicken and dumplins. SO that will last a few days too. and its was just 5.87 for the chicken.
Then throw in some flour for the dumplins and cornmeal and such for the cornbread.
ITs actually an under 10.00 meal.
I honest can not belive y'all have never had brisket!! you cant swing a cat around here for hittin someone who thinks their brisket is the best in the world.
I am a tradionalist all I use is a rub and smoke for about 6 hours. For ribs or brisket. Nothing we cook is over an open flame. The fire is to the side of the grill in a smoke box,
I very seldom use BBQ sauce, its only for chopped beef sandwhiches (and then its sparingly) or if I BBQ chicken in the oven. of course I am a tradionalist in my chili too. NO tomatoes or beans. seasoning and meat ONLY.
The secret to buying a brisket is if you can fold it in half. you cut off only SOME of the fat. ONLY the fat that is hard like a rock. the rest you leave on it. Turning that side up, so it soaks into the meat as it cooks.

cant beleive you live in KY or even just a few hours from TN and you've never had beef brisket! A good one is to die for.
Chelle, let me know the next time, a couple of days in advance, and we'll be there

Don't feel bad Karen, I have never had it either. I have seen it in the store, and DH and I have talked about getting one and trying, but I didn't know how to fix it, so we passed.

They are surprisingly easy. Most in the supermarket have directions right on the package for corned beef. You can boil or bake and they usually include the spice packet. When it's done, just slice for sandwiches (reubens!). Brisket is a relatively cheap cut and can probably be cooked in a crockpot.
Re: I just wish I could do this EVERY DAY!
Right now brisket is on sale for me.... I usually get a smaller slab of it, wrap it in foil, drip some liquid smoke on it (then wrap it in foil) and cook it on low all day long in the crockpot. Put a little tiny bit of water in the bottom.
YUMM!
