GOt sugar? Empty GOt sugar?

Post by chelle Tue Sep 02, 2008 1:48 pm

If any of y'all remember back in 05 sugar went sky high. Well it was cause after Katrina and Rita all the sugar cane down here was destroyed. Imperial sugar is out of .... you ready?? Sugarland, Texas. Smile

Texas and La make most of it.

Well, Gustav ruined quite a bit of it again, and it looks like there will be more huricannes headed our way. So, i recommend stocking up now if you use quite a bit. I go through probebly 10 pounds a week. when I am not making Jellies and such. When I am, I go through about 10 pounds a day. LOL

Anyway, if you have the space, you might want to stock up before the price rises. As far as I know it didnt kill all the rice down around the Texas Gulf Coast. Cause we didnt get hit real hard like we were supposed to, so its safe so far.

Anyway, Just a heads up. Smile

I have to say I don't remember sugar getting that high.... but it was probably overshadowed by the pure shock of the gas prices. I remember crying when the first time they filled the oil tank and gave me the bill after Katrina/Rita. I have to laugh now because it's SO much worse right now and if I don't laugh I might not be able to stop crying.

Thanks! I don't use that much sugar, but I usually try and have at least one bag in the freezer.

Good point, Chelle. Pioneer Sugar is made in MI, we grow lots of sugar beets here, but I imagine it will take another huge jump in price pretty quick if a large percentage of the supply has been lost.

How did you guys fare? Any sustained damage to your home or property?

Lori, nope. We barely even got rain. Not the 10 inches they predicted. and winds were 35-45 MPH, and then only in gusts.

we actually missed all of it. Basicly its just a dreary rainy day. Could be from any other low pressure (or is it high pressure?) system..

DH and I were watching the Weather Channel (that lasted about 2 minutes, zzzzz) and they were showing bands of no rain zones in between the bands of swirling hurricane force winds and rain. I never realized that a hurricane worked like that. I guess I learned something, but I'm still not planning on watching the Weather Channel if I don't have to.

Just the fact that you dont get bugs in it.

I put it in the freezer, or in big bags.

Right now I have about 30 pounds.

Like chelle said, but I don't use my sugar too much, so I would hate to throw something out because of not using it quick enough and bugs get in it.

I am glad that you are not getting hit by it chelle. I have been checking the online weather channel to find out where it is hitting, and trying to figure out where you are admist it all.

I do that with my flour, but we go through the pancake mix quick enough to not keep in the freezer. Though i know some people that do.

Same with us, except replace cereal with bread and milk. I swear we go through at least 3 loaves a week, and 2 1/2 of that is from my Tims'!! lol
