Tie Dyed
I went to the annual Tie Dye at the local library today. Our resident Dead Head librarian supplies everything but the t-shirts (or whatever it is you're dying). I did three and they're marinating in plastic bags right now. I normally do a plain white T or pillowcases or crib sheets. But I had one bright turquiose shirt that had been stuck undersomething wet in the laundry and had mildew spots on it. So I took that and did a bunch of pleats and rings up in rubber bands so they'll stay turquoise and did the rest of it in black to cover the mildew. Then I had two brand new tank tops that I bought last week on sale. They're very comfy, but one is peach and the other is mint green. Not good shades for me. So I did a scrunch pattern on those. Yellow, orange, fuscia, and red on the peach shirt. And turquoise, blue, green, and yellow on the mint green one. So hopefully, there's not a hint of peach or mint left. We'll see. I can always just sleep in them if they're too ugly to be seen in public, LOL. But I miss doing the swirl. Zoe's first crib sheet was a huge swirl that turned out great.
Re: Tie Dyed

Re: Tie Dyed
Cliff (the librarian who runs it every year) gets the dyes from Dharma Trading Company. They're ever so much better than the crap you buy in the grocery stores. Never bleeds or fades. It's actually one of the splurges I hope to make when we start getting more financially stable. I'd like to spend a hundred or two and get enough dye to never have white clothes again, LOL. Actually, I want to do my sheets (king sized) and a bunch of t-shirts and socks and undies and bras. All my nursing bras were tie dyed. But I bought them online that way rather than tie-dye my bras at the library. Although Cliff does his briefs. I know because someone was asking about why it has to be cotton and what fabrics don't take the dye and he pulled up the waistband of his undies to show how the waistbands look perfectly white but the cotton below was colored. We have a very fun library.
Re: Tie Dyed
I love my library too, and might have to miss out on the ice cream social this weekend because I snoozed on registering. But we may just go and see if they have an open spot for us.
That looks like so much fun! I always wanted to do that. The blanket looks nice! I hope the ones you dyed turned out great!

I wish our librairy did cool things like that -- all of our librairians are old bitties!
Re: Tie Dyed
oh far out work there, thebigscott. Reminds me of the 60's. Unfortunately, the closest librairy here is a very small branch, about 35 miles down the highway. However, this site has a book section, so there - this is my librairy.

Re: Tie Dyed
While it sounds neat, my kids would die from being embarassed, if I had that much stuff tie dyed!
I grew up in the 70's (even did a school project on it), so I am drawn to it. However, the kids say it is not cool to wear it, esp at my age. I saw the older lady on Big Brother wearing several pieces and decided my kids are very much correct!

Re: Tie Dyed
LMAO Honey!!!! My kidis are too young to notice but in time would probably prefer tie-die to my jammies that I LIVE in. I have decided I will get dressed while waiting for the school bus (mostly because it is too freaking cold to out there in my jammies here in nowhere NY)
Now I wanna do it. The only white I have are my sheets, and I like them white. They are my one big huge luxury (aside from roadrunner) , I demand expensive sheets, lol, I saved for the two sets I have for almost a year before finding them on a GREAT sale and I was able to get two.

After they finish marinating and are dried, hope you'll post some pictures of them. Love the crib sheet !
And tie died nursing bras? You've got to be kidding... your kids must have felt they were on a pyscadellic (I have no idea how to spell that) trip after every feeding

Re: Tie Dyed
Come to think of it, I have some boxers that are tiedyed.....hmmmm...I bought a crib sheet this morning, it is cotton knit, so i am hoping it will work. I have a dye kit fro Dharma, had it for a while, it has 5 colors, not alot, but enough for a sheet, and maybe a bra or two.

I had one plain white and one plain black and then the tie-dye and they had no preference whatsoever. As long as there was milk, life was good.

That should work. What pattern are you gonna do?

Re: Tie Dyed
Brown and blue could be very nice for a baby boy! Zaven did a brown and blue tie-dyed t-shirt that I loved on year. It was a scrunch design, cause he was always too lazy to do anything else, LOL. But the other designs only look like they're harder to make. In reality, it's all pretty simple to do. You could do a swirl with brown on one side, then flip it and do blue on the other.
I'm trying hard to not go and open up the bags and see what they'll look like. That's the only hard part for me. I want to see how they'll turn out NOW, not later tonight. But the longer you wait (up to 24 hours) the better the dye sets in.
