The Pillars of the Earth

From Library Journal
A radical departure from Follett's novels of international suspense and intrigue, this chronicles the vicissitudes of a prior, his master builder, and their community as they struggle to build a cathedral and protect themselves during the tumultuous 12th century, when the empress Maud and Stephen are fighting for the crown of England after the death of Henry I. The plot is less tightly controlled than those in Follett's contemporary works, and despite the wealth of historical detail, especially concerning architecture and construction, much of the language as well as the psychology of the characters and their relationships remains firmly rooted in the 20th century. This will appeal more to lovers of exciting adventure stories than true devotees of historical fiction. Literary Guild dual main selection.

This was highly thought of at LibraryThing... with good reason! I am enjoying it....

It's soccer month, I can't concentrate long enough to read so I have some road food books for the month: sandwiches and I can't remember the other because I left it in the van.

Kath, I've had Pillars of the Earth on my Wish List at Amazon.com just waiting for the right time to buy it. Actually, since I've joined MyPoints I've found myself turning into quite a pointswhore, and one day I chose 5 or 6 books and was all set to join the paberback of the month club. LOL Changed my mind at the last minute, but I'm still considering. Anyhow, I brought that up because Pillars of the Earth was one of them I had chosen as one of my dollar books.

Right now I'm working on Fool Moon, the second of the Dresden Files series. I'm 2 issues behind on reading Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, too. I have a short trip to Colorado coming up and I'll have to set aside a couple of good books for plane reading (or maybe just bring the Ellery Queen's!)

I love you **Love your naked tiptoe through the tulips, Kath!** I love you

I just started reading, "America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines" by Gail Collins.

I thought it might be an interesting read as it starts with colonial times and moves through American history. I'll let you know what I think as I read.

From Amazon.com
Well researched and well written, America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines is a powerful and important book. Starting with Pocahontas and Eleanor Dare (the first female colonist), this lively and fascinating history records the changes in American women's lives and the transformations in American society from the 1580s through the 2000s.
A history of the oft-marginalized sex must often draw from diaries and journals, which were disproportionally written by whites; as a result, African-American and Native American women are not as well represented as white in the earlier chapters of America's Women. However, Gail Collins writes about women of many races and ethnicities, and in fact provides more information about Native Americans, African-Americans, and Chinese, Jewish, and Italian immigrants than some general U.S. history books. She writes about rich and poor, young and old, urban and rural, slave and slave-owner, athlete and aviatrix, president's wife and presidential candidate--and, of course, men and women. And some of these women--from the justly famous, like Clara Barton and Harriet Tubman, to the undeservedly obscure, like Elizabeth Eckford and Senator Margaret Chase Smith--will not only make any woman proud to be a woman, they will make any American proud to be American.

For me, summer calls for very light reading- something I can read and put back down in a heartbeat, just too many things going on to get into a meaty novel. More mystereies for summer- I don't have to concentrate on them- just read and enjoy.

Kath-I read Pillars of the Earth! I really enjoyed it after about the first 150 pages. I found those a bit difficult. I did read the sequel too. Loved that even more! (Not so much back story!)

Right now I'm reading one of the books you recommended "The Sparrow". I'm loving it! Thanks for the recommendation!

Ida, I am right there with you on the whole mystery reading. I love mysteries!!! I have been reading alot of mysteries lately, though, and wanted something different. That is why I went for the historical book. I read a little bit at a time without worrying about losing the flow of the book.

The Sparrow is on my short list of absolute favorite books.. along with Mists of Avalon and a few others.

I am also reading Don't Call Them Ghosts since it distracted me while I was dusting... I don't usually do two books at once..

This is hands down the most poorly written book I have ever read. Terrible.
The subject matter is good.. but the writing may scare me off before I finish

I just got done with Airhead by Meg Cabot and am so happy to know that there will be a sequel. I read her book "Queen of Babble" a few months ago and was shocked to hear that she is the author to the Princess Diaries series (I think the movies are cute). So, I have been picking up anything new that she has put out. This is more aimed towards teenage girls, but I think almost any female would enjoy this book.
